There are people who are willing to spend $50, $500, $5000 or more on their favourite game that they spend hundreds or thousands of hours playing. With loot boxes you can monetise the people with large amounts of money to spend, while also benefiting from mass market appeal from people who just pay the $50. As the average age of gamers drifts higher you have more and more people earning $100-$150k+ a year who play games and there is an incentive to monetise them.
