This is the story of Dylan Maxwell, a high school student at Hanover High School in Oceanside, CA. Dylan Maxwell is a consistent underachiever and troublemaker with low grades and a shocking disciplinary record. Outside school he spends his time getting high and filming prank videos for his Youtube channel, the Way Back Boys. On Tuesday March 15th 2016 during an administration faculty day between the times of 2:00pm and 2:30pm twenty seven faculty member cars are vandalised with graffiti pictures of dicks. Security footage of the parking lot at the time of the incident was destroyed. The cost of damages runs in excess of $100,000. Following an internal investigation by the school board Dylan Maxwell is deemed to be the guilty party and expelled from Hanover High. The expulsion leaves Dylan with no chance of going to college and the prospect of impending felony charges. The school considers the vandalism incident to be closed. Dylan Maxwell claims that during the time of the incident he was committing a prank with his friends, the Way Back Boys. He did leave them for a brief period of time at 2:00pm during which he was delivering dog food to his girlfriend, Mackenzie Wagner. However, this conflicts with the testimony of the Way Back Boys who all corroborate that he was taking a dump at Priceless Moments, an antique shop. There is no evidence to confirm Dylan's location at the time of the incident. The main witness in the school board's case is Alex Trimboli. He provided testimony that he saw Dylan Maxwell committing the act of vandalism, having been on school grounds to pick up textbooks from his locker. Alex's statements confirm that Dylan walked methodically from car to car, spraying a dick on each one. Furthermore, the destruction of the security footage could only be achieved by one of the nine members of the Hanover High Morning Show who had access to the audio/video room in which the security footage was stored. Dylan Maxwell was one of those members. During the school board hearing, Dylan Maxwell's fate was highly impacted by the testimony of his Spanish teacher, Ms. Shapiro. She had been teaching Dylan for two years during which she reported him to be disruptive and had issued him with repeated detentions. It was found that Mrs. Shapiro's car was not only vandalised with a giant graffiti dick but that one of her tires had been slashed. This testimony provided the motive for Dylan's actions. There was one final piece of evidence that led to Dylan Maxwell's expulsion. He had a history of drawing dicks. Lots and lots of dicks. In the aftermath of Dylan Maxwell's expulsion Peter Maldonado, fellow member of the Hanover High Morning Show, decides to film a documentary investigating the incident. While the school board believes they have found the culprit, Peter deems the case to be circumstantial and plans to explore the evidence further. Assisting with the documentary are Sam Ecklund and Gabi Granger. Sam is another member of the Hanover High Morning Show and Gabi has been his best friend since they were little. She has recently been dating Brandon Galloway, of whom Sam is very jealous. After initial episodes of American Vandal were posted on Peter Maldonado's Youtube channel the show went viral with #WhoDrewTheDicks trending on Twitter. With Hanover High receiving worldwide interest, Peter entered into a distribution deal with Netflix to release the entire series internationally. Now we can follow Peter's journey as he undergoes a lengthy, difficult journey to uncover the truth. Who was the Hanover High Dick Drawer? Follow the facts and make your own conclusion.

So for those who have finished the show: did you have any pet theories about who the vandal was/how the case would play out? I ended up halfway guessing the twitch thing early on, although not the full circumstances, but I was completely suckered by the Mackenzie theory. Man the mystery is actually legitimately good.

Oh my God episode 7 "tongue-ring Tanya from the mall Applebee's" This is pitch perfect satire of a lot of things but it loving nails Oceanside/south Cali suburban life in general

I was legitimately dumbstruck by the plotting of this thing and could only nod along as the show took me wherever it wanted to go. The closest I came was during episode 5, when Peter was laying out all the fan theories. He didn't go into it, but when Kraz came up as a suspect I really liked the idea of it. Of course it starts to fall apart after just a few seconds of thought—no access to the tapes—but the dude's perpetual desperation to be looked up to and loved by the generation under him made him a walking motive in my book.

When Rafferty wins the Teacher of the Year award you can Kraz just walk straight off the stage. I thought for sure this was going to end up being a Chekhov's Motive for a later reveal.

OH poo poo I missed that! (Again, full season) The best part of how (semi) open-ended the show left off is how it invites you to keep theorizing. Christa was DEFINITELY involved, but maybe Van wasn't outside of giving her a motive. Maybe she felt like she could confide in Kraz somehow about what happened, and once Kraz lost Teacher of the Year...suddenly they both had bitter feelings toward the whole faculty. Of course, the weak link in this is the idea that any student thought she could confide in Kraz.

I really want to scour through all the Nana's Party footage to see if there's any shots showing Kraz in the background. He seems like the kind of teacher who could crash a student party

Here's an interesting interview with Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault on how they came at the show: http://mashable.com/2017/09/16/american-vandal-season-2-ending-who-drew-the-dicks-netflix/ They have an idea for a second season.

I was compelled to finish it and find out who drew the dicks but i felt like it started to drag toward the middle. And I got tired of all the "bobby hill told jimmy buffet that tara reid saw jimmy mcnulty" highschool nonsense pretty fast. It's accurate, it's just annoying. I also don't think the ending was open-ended at all. Van looks exactly like dylan in a hoodie and Alex says he saw a guy who looked like that. The only issue I have with that theory is Alex's tell. Every time he says 100% he's lying, and he says it right after he tells Dylan he really saw someone in the parking lot. And then despite Dylan being exonerated he loses everything. In one episode he goes from top of the world to "gently caress it who cares" when he realizes that nobody really cares about him, they just like drama. And that's basically it for him. It ends with him worse off than when he started. Still facing vandalism charges and minus a girlfriend and future prospects. Resigned to his brother's life. It's hard for me to reconcile how someone could go through that, with Peter fighting so hard for him for no real benefit, and then just say gently caress it clearly nobody cares about me.

It seems to be for the most part kind of a blend of Making a Murderer and Serial. I've never seen MaM and wouldn't call it necessary at all, I still understood what was being parodied with no issue.

Very fun series, binged it in a day. As for who drew the dicks the "who knows CPR?" moment and Christa's boyfriend being her alibi are pretty clear sign posts. Also the boyfriend being called Van Delorey.

Dylan is better off, even with the new vandalism charge. Spray painting a driveway is probably petty vandalism, in contrast with the felony charge he was about to get stuck with for the cars.

Sure, legally, but he lost an entire school worth of people as people who were his friends or at least interested in the drama and his girlfriend. That's why he halfheartedly lies at the end. He just wants that part of his life where he was the most important thing back. It's all he ever had. All he could do is try to recapture it.

It's one of the best pastiches I've ever seen/read/whatever in any loving medium. It's very, very on point and endlessly funny. Does the school body seem really loving small though? I realize that for practical purposes they couldn't hire/film a full school's worth of people but even in the assembly with the senior class, the senior class seemed loving tiny. I wouldn't expect that from such an urban area.
