That reminds me, I was thinking it would end up being one of the Wayback Boys (or Girl!) that Mackenzie was cheating with, what with the "will your roommates be home?" line. Was there any hint about who it was?

This show is really funny. It takes all the silly true crime stuff and runs with it. An actual good Netflix show.

i almost stopped after two episodes because i thought it was aggressively unfunny but i just finished it and it got surprisingly good by the end e: although I was a little disappointed by the reveal at the end because all the black bars in this thread led me to believe that it was going to be a lot more open ended than it ends up being. that's obviously not really the show's fault but still romanowski fucked around with this message at 04:04 on Sep 19, 2017 |

Actually, I was surprised at just how well done the mystery was. There were a few moments that made me laugh out loud like the suspect card that Sam made for Peter ("Motive: loves xoxo") and the hand job recreation. I will say, the whole thing is extremely accurate to the high school experience, and this show was extremely well cast. I found the last episode to be genuinely moving, and I found myself really hating Shapiro after Dylan ended up throwing his second chance away.

banned from Starbucks posted:The concept was funny but after ep 2 i really couldnt give a poo poo about watching another one let alone 6 more or whatever. I can see why someone would say this but it goes a lot of places you wouldn't expect it to. Starting with episode 4 there's a very significant "twist" (when it switches to "we've been showing this documentary as we film it") As for Ming: First off, he's the last guy you'd expect. Dude, it's Ming! He's from Canada! We're deliberately shown at least twice that he'll do anything under peer pressure (chugging alcohol). A theory with a little more heft: It was Dylan's big brother. He drives a tow truck so nobody would think it odd if he was hanging around the parking lot.

For people down on Dylan, after the last episode, I think the show makes it pretty good case for why he'd act that way. Sure, the whole documentary effort lifted his spirits for a while, but it snaps back to reality when he sees everyone trashing him on film, which is then further exacerbated by him not being able to escape Oceanside. Like, the "documentary" even explicitly calls out the issue of him being treated as a gently caress up by pretty much everyone for so long, and the effect this could have had on him. In a more meta sense, it makes it obvious that there are real limits to what such a documentary can do for people - and how effective such individual attempts at justice are. I don't think it's hard to argue either that the show is to a large degree about the issue of class and social heritage, and how hard it is to escape the role that society has imposed upon you. Sure, Dylan was proven innocent, that doesn't mean it was without cost for Dylan and his family - both in a monetary sense, but also in terms of Dylan's belief in his own future. Meanwhile, the authorities which put him through all this went entirely untouched, even when it was proven that the school had failed to live up to legally mandated poo poo. And obviously there's the very clear case of Shapiro hating on Dylan because of his brother, before he even had a chance to make a different impression. More generally on the class issue, just look at Dylan's (or his friend's) house compared to the house where the party is at. Or how his archenemy Shapiro is married to a doctor or some poo poo. Yes, Dylan is a gently caress up, but but if nearly everyone with the power to make him do better just dismissed him because of class signifiers then he never stood a chance. Aside from that, the show also touches upon the topic of authority in general. Dylan is explicitly forced to prove his innocence, while Christa is allowed to do all her protests and poo poo when it doesn't threaten the authorities, but the moment she does do something that might have some consequences they bury the issue. Essentially, the reigning order will gently caress you the first chance they get, face no consequences for their actions, and even the people favored by the system aren't allowed the chance to make a difference when it really matters. All in all, the show is an indictment of the (eroding) liberal hegemony we live in - and the ideas it propagates; that awareness is the same as solving something, or that systemic issues can be tackled on a case by case basis. Good show.

Currently two episodes in and, based on an extensive background in Agatha Christie, my theories in order of descending likelihood are: 1.) The Spanish teacher and/or the school administration did it because she was tired of Dylan constantly disrupting student life. (This one seems too obvious, so it is probably wrong) 2.) Dylan's girlfriend did it to separate Dylan from the Wayback Boys, but aggressively miscalculated 3.) There's some kind of "Murder on the Orient Express" situation where everyone except Peter and his crew are in the know 4.) Peter did it... somehow? Maybe? Why's he reporting on this anyways? 5.) Pat Micklewaite E5 Spoilers: YO, THIS DUDE JERKS OFF TO AMERICAN APPAREL CATALOGS! E5 Spoilers 2: poor nana QuoProQuid fucked around with this message at 02:17 on Sep 20, 2017 |

E6: First off, I love the kids using their supporters to get back on campus. That was well done. I also love how accurately the show does high school drama. I love this dumb parody. Regarding the mystery, I am almost positive that the USB drive is a red herring. For one, it's too obvious. Second, I cannot understand the motive of whomever gave the USB drive to the kids if the Coach is actually involved in the case. More likely, I think it is a ploy by the Spanish teacher to eliminate a rival at the school (she seemed pretty jazzed about her teacher of the year awards and I cannot imagine she was happy to see the Coach get it last year). I don't think it is related to the case. I still go back to Dylan's girlfriend, who has spent the entire show in the background and has been consistently overlooked by Peter and company. She's got a motive in Dylan trashing her grandmother's house. She's got access to data files, via her relationship with Dylan. She has the capacity to edit the video because of her background on Twitch. She also knows Dylan's modus operandi well enough to frame him. The only niggling detail is that Dylan claims to have been with her at the time. I'm not really sure why he would trick him unless he never went to his girlfriend's house at all. Even then, I'm not sure why he would lie about it unless he was doing something even more incriminating at the same time. Hope Peter uses his celebrity status to get into a good college at the end of the show. QuoProQuid fucked around with this message at 03:31 on Sep 20, 2017 |

Just finished. In the end, it really was about the justice system. Looking back at my previous post, one of my favorite things about this show was seeing the characters journey down the exact same lines of logic as myself. I was so completely suckered by Mackenzie that I didn't see the other evidence in front of me. I also really like how we never find out what it was coach said.
