![]() The Creative Convention is a regular gathering of aspiring authors from all walks of life, coming together time and again to share their ideas and see what their talented peers are working on. But little do any of this year's attendees know - this time, things will turn out VERY differently... Death of the Author is a game of Mafia for 9 players, using the Backup6 semi-open setup. (This special Creative Convention game has been approved by sebmojo. Thanks!) What is Mafia? Mafia is a parlor game played around the world, centering on the concept of an uninformed majority competing against an informed minority. The "town" players (good guys) generally only know their own alignment, while the "scum" (bad guys) know who their teammates are and who they have to kill. The goal of the town is to eliminate all scum, while the goal of the scum players is to reach parity with the number of town players. Both scum and town often have special roles which will aid them in accomplishing their goals. There also may be players who are neither town nor scum, called Third Party or 3P, who may have alternate win conditions such as surviving until the end of the game or being the only person left alive. (Though there are no 3P in the Backup6 setup.) Once the game begins it is divided into two phases: Day and Night. During the day phase, all players discuss in the game thread who they believe is a member of the scum team, and then vote for that person. Our forums have a vote bot, Votefinder, which tallies votes that are formatted ##vote Playername (bold is required). Once one person has received a majority of the votes, that player is "executed" and removed from the game. They can no longer participate in the thread or in any private communications they had access to while alive. The moderator will post that person's alignment and role in the thread and end the day phase. Once in night phase, there is no voting, and conversation may or may not be prohibited depending on the moderator. During this phase, the scum choose someone to kill. In addition, players with special powers can use these during the night. After all actions have been received by the moderator, they will announce who has died during the night and begin the next day phase where the cycle begins again. This continues until one faction has reached their win condition and the game ends in victory for Town, Scum, and/or 3P. Helpful Links: SA Mafia Wiki SA Mafia Discussion Thread (FLASH) Basic Guide to Mafia (FLASH) Guide to Mafia Roles Backup6 Setup Details Sounds great! How do I play? ![]() Once the game fills up, I'll send out Role PMs (contain important information such as your alignment and any special powers you have) and announce that the game has started! Day/Night phase lengths will vary, but Days will typically be 2ish actual days long and Nights will be 18-24 hours depending on how quickly people submit actions. Once the game begins, the single most important thing you can do is POST! Posting is town's greatest weapon - you can discuss your suspicions with people, and catch scum in lies and fake cases. Remember, scum do not want to give away that they're bad guys, but they can and will slip up. It's up to town to catch and execute them! Don't worry about looking or sounding dumb - ![]() This is a great write-up of how to play this game effectively as town: https://pastebin.com/aDwW41Kb If you're not playing the game, feel free to read along, but DO NOT POST IN THE THREAD if you're not playing or if you've died! I will have a spectator/dead doc for out-of-game discussion - PM me if you want access. Standard Mafia Rules:

![]() It was a long - but productive - first day for the Creative Convention, hosted at a local university's library. The event kicked off with an address by the esteemed keynote speaker, followed by breakout workshops and panels. Drafts were shared freely, and feedback flowed back in return. Fast friendships were formed over cups of steaming coffee from the well-stocked buffet. As the day wound to a close, everyone agreed it had been well worth the time spent. A reserved table at a nearby steakhouse awaited the hungry yet energized attendees, for a celebratory dinner. The cheerful mood began to sour as the first person tried to leave, only to find that the library doors refused to open. As the doors rattled and held firm against the attendees' exit, someone wondered aloud if perhaps the staff had locked up early. Looking to and fro, the guess was further supported when not a single staff member could be found. It was then that someone noticed the view through the tall windows had shifted - rather than an idyllic New England evening, they looked out upon a thick grey mist dotted throughout with strange twinkling lights. But before anyone could do or say much more, the lights blinked out briefly throughout the whole library - followed by startled screams. When the lights came back on, the screams only intensified... ![]() The keynote speaker swayed from a rope above the podium he had spoken at, just that morning. His eyes bulged in shock and terror, but his face was already gray and putrid like that of a long-dead corpse. Scribbled index cards showered down around him - his notes from the speech. Each one was slashed through with blood-red ink, viciously correcting talking point after talking point. Clearly, someone disagreed with his lecture... violently. ![]() ![]() Trapped with no hope of escape, and one person already dead. The menace and panic begin to build in the back of your minds. If it's only attendees stuck in here... does that mean the murderer is hidden among you? To save yourselves, you may be forced to take justice into your own hands... Day 1 starts now. Deadline is Thursday 21-SEP at 8:00 PM EDT. If evening EDT timelines pose an issue to you, please PM me and I'll do my best to accommodate everyone. ![]() Podima fucked around with this message at 18:27 on Sep 22, 2017 |

Eventually, the shouting reached its peak - the majority of those present had focused their ire on one hapless young man. The young lad had been a quiet presence throughout the day, occasionally chiming in here and there. Before things went strange, he had even shared a very rough draft with shaking hands - all assembled agreed that it had potential to be a fine space opera, given enough time to develop the characters and setting. But all that was forgotten, as the trapped group's patience snapped. Roaring as one, the lynch mob - for that's certainly what it was, make no mistake - chased their target through the library. Chairs were cast aside, and books went flying unheeded, but finally the chase reached its end atop a third-floor balcony. Cold tile gleamed far below, as step by step the mob advanced on their target... until something snapped in him, too. Swearing a vile oath, the quiet lad whirled and flung himself from the balcony! His wild screams swiftly ceased, but their echoes took far longer to die away than anyone liked. As the crowd rushed forward to see their handiwork... a harsh roar like fingernails on a chalkboard echoed through the library, and foul green mist geysered upwards! Before their eyes, an enraged specter burst forth from the fresh corpse - shaking his fist at the assembled attendees, the ghost whirled up and through the ceiling with nary a parting word. All he left in his wake was a stunned silence. quote:Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced. - Leo Tolstoy ![]() ![]() Thoroughly unsettled, you can barely stand to be around the others right now. By mutual agreement, you all split up to find somewhere to rest for a bit - chairs, couches, even tables will suffice. As you nod off into what is sure to be a fitful slumber, you absently wonder to yourself... hasn't that twinkling mist cleared, just a bit? Night 1 begins now. You have ~18 hours to get me night actions (before 2 PM EDT tomorrow). The thread will reopen shortly thereafter.

![]() Your rest was anything but, as the library creaked and groaned ominously throughout the night. Was it just your paranoia at work, or were the sounds a sign of others moving under the cover of darkness? All you could do was wait and wonder, teetering on the edge between terrified slumber and drowsy dread. ~~~ The bedraggled captives clustered around the sad remains of the buffet from the previous day, scrounging what they could for a morning meal. As they choked down cold coffee and stale pastries, wakefulness reluctantly returned - and with it, the realization that someone was missing. Had they slept in? Strange choice to make. But a quick search dispelled all possible doubt as to their fate. ![]() In the end, all they had to do was follow their noses. The stench led them to a dusty and disused side room of the library. Peering in they could see that it was set up much like a lecture hall, ready for someone to present their finest work. But judging by the massive pile of fresh garbage covering the lectern and anyone who might have been standing behind it, the critical reception was clearly anything but positive... quote:How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live. - Henry David Thoreau ![]() ![]() Day 2 starts now. Deadline is Sunday 24-SEP at 5:30 PM EDT. I know weekend deadlines can be a bit difficult, but don't let me down!

One of the attendees shoved a stale croissant in their mouth, before proclaiming (with an accompanying shower of crumbs) that they were going to try and escape today - no matter what! Bulling through the inevitable disagreements and arguments that came up, they managed to bully a few others into reluctant assistance. With their help, the aspiring escapee built a rickety tower of tables and chairs alongside one of the tall mist-shrouded windows. Scaling the unsteady pile, the escapee saluted the rest of the group before leaping towards the window with a wild cry! With a tinkling crash, the window shattered under the impact, and the escapee sailed out into the choking mists - immediately vanishing from view. The others crowded around the base of the broken window, broken glass crunching under their shoes. They could see nothing of what lay beyond the twinkling fog, though it seemed reluctant to flow into the library. After a few heart-pounding moments of silence, they heard the escapee's voice from beyond the window - first a shout of victory, and then cursing over some cuts and bruises. A sigh of relief swept through the onlookers - perhaps an escape WAS really possible. They could all get out of here safe and sound! That hope died the moment the agonized screams began. quote:Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on. - Louis L'Amour ![]() ![]() Night 2 begins now. ![]() You pass another restless night in the library, with your own fate weighing heavily upon your mind. You've already seen enough death to last you a lifetime - but will there be more horrors awaiting you tomorrow? The alternative, of course, is that you won't live to see the next day. Would that be preferable? ~~~ Raucous laughter woke the survivors from what could barely be called 'slumber.' Hastily assembling around the tableful of rock-hard pastries and scummy coffee, they quickly confirmed that someone was, once again, missing - surely the source of the laughter. But what could possibly be so funny, in a place like this? ![]() They found the missing person chained to a chair, with one last gasped chuckle escaping their now-lifeless lips. Piled around them were dusty jokebooks - clearly untouched for years on end. Someone had certainly gotten the last laugh, but it wasn't this poor soul. quote:There is no surer foundation for a beautiful friendship than a mutual taste in literature. - P. G. Wodehouse ![]() ![]() Day 3 starts now. Deadline is Tuesday 26-SEP at 7:30 PM EDT.

Sorry for the delay - I had this post all written up and ready to go at the end of my workday, but accidentally closed Chrome right before I posted it. Blech.![]() The declaration of guilt rang with finality, echoing throughout the library. The remaining survivors' eyes met, before turning to the accused. They took a hasty step back, and then another as the rest of the group advanced on them. Begging and pleading, they appealed to the others' better and baser inclinations alike. Promises of peer reviews for life, publishing contracts through an uncle's friend, and more - all of it proved ineffective against the others' slow advance. Finally, they turned on their heel and fled into the shadowy stacks with the others in hot pursuit. When the executioners finally cornered their quarry some time later, he - she - it was no longer recognizable. Their face was twisted with hatred into an unrecognizable snarl, and their body had been warped and strained beyond any conceivable breaking point by the spectral wrath of its current inhabitant. He ranted at the assembled group with a torn and raspy voice - that they were ruining everything, that the work being created here was a perversion to the beautiful literary world he had put so much of himself into building and nurturing, and that all they had to do was stand aside and let him make things right. ...If there's one thing the aspiring authors had learned from their time in the Creative Convention, it was how to recognize overused villainous monologues. Their unflinching gazes left the twisted spirit cringing as his rant trailed off into nothing. Finally, he doubled over, cursing their names and spitting bile before tearing himself free of the scrap of flesh he had hidden away in this whole time. As the sad remains hit the ground with a wet splatter, the defeated spirit whirled itself away into nothingness with one final vow of vengeance. quote:It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. - Herman Melville ![]() ![]() ![]() Bright rays of sunlight illuminated the stacks as the choking mists cleared from the library, revealing the outside world beyond. All the doors unlocked at once with a jangling clatter, and the way out was clear at last.
