As you know the 80's was an intensely cheesy decade. If you weren't born yet, let me assure you that it was much worse than old movies have led you to believe. But at the time we had things we thought were cool. Now some of that stuff I can look at and know right away it was cheesy and terrible, for example: Knight Rider. Other stuff I just can't tell.

Is this cool, or too 80s?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrZZfaDp02o
The background characters are pretty cheesy, I think the main guy is still pulling it off though. Rats are not nearly as edgy these days.

How about this?

Probably wouldn't choose that lipstick with that hair color these days, but other than that it seems to hold up pretty well.

Eh?

Got some very 80's hair here. The lyrics don't make much sense, but the sound is pretty unique. Not sure how well the animation holds up.

Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
you should consider setting the age bar lower, I'm 28 and I acquired most of 80's pop culture through a mix of older kids, reruns, grand theft auto vice city, and I Love The 80's on vh1. it's basically insane to me that the 80's are as far away from today as the 60's were for me

the 80's have since become a blurry smear of Drive, Stranger Things, Hotline Miami, Blood Dragon, and that 80's text generator meme, and I could not possibly tell you if Tears For Fears genuinely rules or if I just kind of know about them and mistook an image of a grimy neon haze of cynical knowing excesses and a pop culture based on plastic consumption that's come to represent the era in retrospect as the genuine article

actually people my age think that 80s cheese is cool so the answer is not clear cut, OP

I barely make the cutoff, but I'll say this: regardless of whether or not it's cheesy or cool, people born/raised in the 80s have been managing media projects for a while so retro-appropriation is and has been in since about 2008 or so. Couple that with the fact that culture never really "goes away" now because of the internet, and that the late 80s/early 90s is the cutoff for when mass culture could and would evaporate quickly, it's not surprising that it's stuck around.

Here are six different types of 80s-style music dubbed everything from Synthwave to Retrowave to Citypop to FutureFunk to Chillwave to Vaporwave, made by people my age or younger within the last decade (with noted exception of slacker god John Carpenter):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLzjm9E1hwg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyNuWCjc-bg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xveBtWwtgCM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP7kapbwQ-Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCecdVTTTh4

Now this isn't the same as what you're talking about-- whether kids today still think like, The Cure or appreciate Slayer or w/e is still considered cool, but just know that for a lot of people (read: male nerds) there's a real stripe of 80s crap alive and well and it's obvious the appreciation isn't ironic.

Maybe something a little less well known. Gowan was a huge hit in Canada, but apparently didn't get much play in the US so his stuff is less likely to be in the nostalgia pieces. Also official clean versions of the videos don't seem to exist.

Annie Lenox has the quintessential 80s look in that video and if you don't like it you can gently caress right off. It fits right in with what Bowie and Nomi were doing.

Oh, I agree. I was born 72 and as a teen thought everything from the 60s and 70s was lame. Such flat hair, ewww.

let's start with a glaring omission, how could any 80s list be complete without

That's the problem, it IS cool

80s poo poo has a style that will outlast the 80s in a way most decades don't. The 60s maybe comes close. Nobody gives a flying gently caress about the 90s and nobody ever will because they suuuuucked.
