Your song "Adorable" is the poo poo. Reminds me of the old Elephant 6 stuff. Thinking of The Gerbils. If you don't know them, check out the album "Are You Sleepy?" It's in a similar vein, and I think you'd really dig.

I finally finished up a solo full length I've been working on for the better part of a year. Perfect for fans of mostly clean guitars, motorik style grooves, monotonous basslines, and whiney vox. It's called "Achievements in Large Scale Topiary". I'm really proud of it, but I wish I'd had the resources to record the drums properly. At the time of recording, I only had the means to do a 2 microphone setup.

The Latin band I’m in is mixing and mastering our 1st album now. It’s been one of the smoothest processes I’ve experienced.

Our funk band is also 2/3rds done with our second album. The process hasn’t been as smooth, but we have a lot of material to work through. Here’s a demo of my favorite, minus horn stuff. (I hope this link works) https://www.dropbox.com/s/4m4o7dqtttqjl2k/Emptiness%20-%20160327%20%281%29.wav?dl=0

I guess I'll join in. I've been writing an album on and off for years. Since I started playing and writing music. It's gone through many iterations. A five track EP, a 30 track double album, and so on. At the moment I have 33 tracks written to various stages if completion. Of those I cut it to ten tracks for the album.

Here's the Soundcloud of the demos for the album:
https://soundcloud.com/indigo-monsoon/sets/clutter

I'm pretty proud of it. Once vocals are written I'll be rerecording everything properly.

If I were to describe it I'd say "Smashing Pumpkins ripoff blended with some Australian Alt Rock".

Helping a friend (drums) write/record an album. He wrote 11 songs while he's been working from home. Brought another friend (guitar/bass) and myself (keys/guitar) to help him flesh it out and make it real. He has a pretty good idea in his head of what he wants it to sound like, but decoding that into actual chords and notes is not his strong suit.

It's definitely a different experience. It's nice having material already semi-written, as opposed to everyone jamming for 45 minutes, saying "I liked that" and promptly forgetting it leading to songs never being written. Also a bit frustrating finding out where the creative control/artistic license line is. Some songs are fully fleshed out in his head and he really wants us to adhere to that vision. Some are very open, he says it could go anywhere, didn't have anything specific in mind but likes this/that.

We're almost to the point where we have the songs solid enough to start recording. The big thing is recording the drums. My friend is hesitant to go to a studio. He feels like he'd be under pressure to record when renting out time, and is uncomfortable recording with a stranger there. Otherwise, between the bassist and myself we have the equipment to record the drums, but finding the space and time to set up/breakdown is the big holdup there. We have out options, just a matter of debate and deliberation.

As a whole it's a new way of doing stuff for me. I don't hate it. But it's really awesome to be doing the music thing again.

So, helping my friend about once a week with this album, 18 months later, garners this:

I wrote a song a very long time ago that's literally Solid Body, that intro riff is (except for how it's played) note for note what I had written which I just find amazing because it is beautiful, and cool that we managed to come up with the same thing.
Riffs are solid, the songs are very nicely written and I think you've got some good stuff here! I think the only thing that is lacking is a more driven vocal approach because what you've got I think could be really huge.

Working on an EP of original material. I've had about 6-7 sketches of songs in the works for years and years, and never really had the time/means to develop them fully myself. A few of them I was able to develop with an old band, but I've since moved away, and haven't been able to find a comparable group where I am now. So I figured what the hell, I'd just do it all myself (except for drums). I'm primarily a bassist, but it's giving me a great excuse to relearn some instruments. For the drums I'm working with a guy I played with for about a decade. He lives across the country, but has access to a good studio... So I send him scratch tracks with a loop that's close to what I have in mind, and he'll send me back the finished drum track.

I like to think of it as groove-jazz, or just funk-fusion. I'm heavily influenced by The Meters, The New Mastersounds, Medeski Martin and Wood, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, etc.

This track is the most "done": https://soundcloud.com/fro_tone/hop-scotch-on-the-rocks-v3/s-kSEGl
Bass and guitar are still scratch-ish, so re-doing those is next on the list. Then I want to insert a brief solo for both the guitar and organ. Tried to work in some trumpet, but really couldn't come up with any phrasing that I liked.

These are a few of mine that I recorded with my old band, so I'm going to try and do a re-interpretation of each:

Hey! Long time since I posted. I could finally afford my first MIDI keyboard (a launchkey mini) and decided to go on a different adventure with my next set of songs. Plenty of synths and percussion and influences. Just finished a new track called "Night Out" which is a...I dunno...Talking Heads tribute? Maybe a little Bowie? 3 tracks down so far. I'm having a blast!

https://shiftershapes.bandcamp.com/album/side

This is a big change from what I usually play. And I know that I'm going to try and marry my two styles after I get out of this sheer MIDI honeymoon phase. I was working on these tracks before (been going solo on music), but now that I've got the MIDI keyboard, I've also been getting more heavily invested in my mixing.

During recording the guitar player was using an isocab in the same room so it was pretty loud. Forced me to choose timbres that could cut through the midsy guitar. The bitcrusher on the Roland system 1-m I was using is very musical and did a good job of giving me those sandy or clean high frequency textures without being overpowering of fatiguing.

We have another upcoming noisier and heavier album currently going through mastering.

ColdPie

What do you think of the System 1m? I was thinking of picking one up. It seems like a good balance of capabilities while still having all the controls immediately in front of you without a bunch of menu-diving. A lot of the demos I've seen on YouTube make it sound very buzzy, but I'm not sure if that's just how those demos are done.

It's an awesome little synth with some weird quirks, has the Roland flavor on the filter and the oscillators are very powerful with some cool and unexpected waveforms, including some added by a firmware update that aren't indicated on the panel. Way more appealing and ergonomic than any of their boutique stuff to me, but uses the same ACB technology (so its a virtual analog essentially). I like to use it as a supplemental voice patched into the external input of my Matrixbrute and controlled via CV. I've never used the plugout feature as the emulations cost ~$150 each and at this point I would probably buy a Behringer MS-101 instead of figuring out some weird alternate mode in the same box.

It's big brother the System-8 is also a high quality sleeper synth I think, and there's a keyboard version if you don't care about CV. I do also think its a good value if you wanna get into modular. You get a pair of envelopes, oscillators, and an LFO for a reasonable price. You can also patch external signals thru the filter. Onboard delay & reverb aren't great, but I love the bitcrusher and the master tone control.

The biggest things that get in my way are:
- 4 voice polyphony is a little restrictive, and can only do mono when CV is patched
- cant turn off the green lights
- esoteric button combos to change some settings
- the CV implementation has some strange choices, like the LFO is 10v bipolar and needs to be attenuated or scaled to be useful with a lot of other eurorack stuff, also the V/Oct CV input doesn't work unless the gate input is also patched, but you can just dead patch it.

I'm in some freaky new territory, taking my music to a whole different playing field. Prior to this I did psychedelic folk music. Me and an old friend decided to put our heads together to try and build out some black/doom metal tracks as a duo. We just put out our first track late last night.

I did voiceovers for video game characters previously, where I played mummies and ghouls and whatnot, so I figured I could do the black metal voice alright. But boy I killed my throat on this track and I didn't even sing that much. Assume it was the projecting that got me. I need to find some ways to adjust.

But we tried to mix some atmospheric deathly soundscapes and then twist into a doom rhythm, ending with a spooky, empty soundscape. I have to admit that I had a ton of fun making the switch from acoustic to electric. It's such a new sound that it's really reinvigorated my interest in making music. It's also just good to be collaborating again.

In any case, have a listen!

I'm at about 3., Which means it's time to start recording and cleaning up final versions of songs. I can see this thread isn't *crazy* busy, so I hope it won't be annoying if I start puking updates into it partially for my own sake.

I really dig this! I also got really into making Doom-inspired tracks (although I'd say you did a much better job not only in recreating that specific sound but also in composition) last december.

My stuff is here, it's all guitar bass and drums without any true melodic instruments (I decided to put limitations in instruments and length of time, trying to build the songs on the strength of the riffs and keeping it short enough to stay interesting the whole way through).

I recorded an EP with my old fusion band several years ago before I moved out to Denver. I've been talking to the guys lately and we all want to fire up the engines again and expand it into a full LP. Unfortunately our old drummer is a travel nurse now, and with COVID going on, there's just no way he could put any time into it. But thankfully another drummer I've been playing with for 20 years at this point is down and both he and I couldn't be more excited. Our old drummer was good, but this dude is fuckin phenomenal.

It'll be a bit interesting doing this entirely remotely (at least for my part). But everyone has good-to-great recording setups or access to a good studio.

I just released my first album! It's synthpunk, with Devo, Gary Numan, Adult., The Faint, and Atom and His Package as influences, along with whatever else felt right for each song: https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/releases

Here's a general mood breakdown:

Punk: Open Up!, Masks Off, Hunting Season, Origin 2 - The Ritual
Post-punk: Dragon Slayer, Origin 1 - Witness
Catchy: Scratch a Liberal, (All You Have To Do Is Not Be an) rear end in a top hat, The Big Hit Single
Instrumental: Glitch//Intermission, Origin 3 - Shutting Down

This was an entirely solo effort I started back in June when I popped out enough synth focused sketches to turn them into an album, minus two tracks that I couldn't make work. Now to get to work on the surfy post-punk stuff I've been working on for the past decade.
