Wait - Kenji did told Fuzzy and Sasha that Pink's in the army ; I'm assuming Julie know that as well, given that they know each other (and, IIRC, saw Pink at least one in uniform - at the meal in the ward). What's the surprise?

Also, I'm trying to remember how much Kenji told Fuzzy about his job ; In particular, when she visited ACHE. Coming with a blank.

I think it's more that Saanvi isn't surprised that Kenji is a high school student and is calling in all sorts of military hardware. It's not that Fuzzy and Julie are surprised. It's that Saanvi isn't surprised and already knows.

Yeah, isn't this easily solved by having Chip go around each of the entrances and telling the tour guides that we are expecting people and get them to escort them to 88 Tastes?

When I rolled Kenji's composure, he got a zero. I used his second to last edge to reroll and then succeeded. Sometimes I do stuff like this on edge rolls where it's sometimes about gritting their teeth or dumb luck that helps steady them, though not always. He's going to remember himself rather than running out like an idiot. Kenji is a person and is prone to making mistakes as we've seen, but he's normally cool under fire.

His buff for himself and his spirits and his debuff for everyone else actually only extends to his shop at the moment. Kenji has 10 dice for composure due to his -1 penalty. Sometimes you just don't roll any hits. Unlike say, D&D, there are no flat +1's in Shadowrun. You just get a chance to get more successes on dice. You could get 20 hits on 20 dice or 0 hits on 20 dice. Failure is always an option even for the hyper-competent. Shadowrun dice will screw you over at times or totally surprise you by giving you hits on every single die. It makes for interesting rolls.

Make him run outside then run right back inside, red-faced! It fits both what happened in the thread and succeeding on a reroll.

So there is one way to guarantee hits, as far as I can remember it's the only way. You have to burn an Edge though. Burn as in reduce your Edge attribute permanently, same way you can survive what would normally kill you.

It might only be useable for attacks, don't have the book right in front of me.

I can think of two ways to absolutely guarantee hits. First, you can buy hits at the cost of 4 dice each when the GM allows it, which is normally recommended for times when the outcome of a roll isn't going to critically effect anything. Like if you're haggling over the exact price of a piece of gear or something, instead of rolling eight dice and trusting in luck the GM will probably allow you to just buy two hits straight up if you'd prefer. But no GM worth their salt will let you buy hits in a high-stakes situation. That's what the second case I can think of is for, where you can permanently burn off a point of your Edge to automatically succeed a test with +4 hits above whatever the threshold is.

Yep, forgot about that. Burning edge to succeed is something that I'll normally do with boss battles. This means that they're more likely to survive and escape, but will be far less prepared for a second round, or even just prolong the fight for dramatic purposes. Shadowrun isn't as fun if someone one shots your boss character straight out of the gate.

When I GM I allow anyone to do it at any time. You're looking at a minimum of 10 karma to restore edge 1 to edge 2 which would take at least one successful shadowrun to complete if this were a normal game. Otherwise it takes months of posting and that's if they're in the correct book. Normally I'll give out 2-4 karma for succeeding at a challenge with a cost to failure, but they're not in danger and I'll give 8-10 karma for succeeding at a challenge in which they're in danger. Karma can be bought as well and the going rate is 1500 nuyen a pop which may have a minor narrative consequence, but essentially you're chucking money down a hole.

I thought about allowing for automatic hits, but currently I only do that for language rolls which narratively tells me if someone has a basic command of the language, is fluent or can speak on esoteric/technical/academic subjects like religion or engineering. I view it as a time saving measure, but I roll everything else because I'm writing books here. I can afford to take time for some rolls. Plus I like the variance because interesting things happen when I allow rolls to hit large heights or horrible failures.

I've been lazy lately and not editing or updating the website. I want to get it all done in one fell swoop but I doubt that's going to happen now by the deadline I set for myself. I'm just too far behind. Some of this has to do with the fact that my banner isn't ready yet, but also because editing is unfun. The plan is to update in big chunks come the future to get it all up at once and then do twice weekly updates on a schedule once I hit either book four or book five. I want to update, but without the banner or any artwork beyond that my reader retention is not going to be good on the website.

--

On another note, I'm considering buying a rotating banner on SA to get more eyes on the thread. Lowtax needs money for his bones and I can shell out eight bucks to make that happen. If anyone would be interested in making a simple banner to drive eyes here I'd appreciate it since I'm not the greatest when it comes to art. Sometimes even simple art. If not, I'll figure it out on my own.

Also I'm going to be taking a vacation come this Christmas. Since the holidays are when people tend to buy my old backlog and I'm changing my medical plan, I am finally able to get some breathing room. I seem to finally be recovering from my illness and maybe the recovery will stick this time instead of being temporary. Fingers crossed. I was actually able to go on a run for the first time in over a year today. I got moderately dizzy partway through it, but that was after a mile of interval running and I count that as progress.

--

I pecked at the update a bit, but it's enormous and I lost a piece of it which made me lose momentum. I plan on breaking the mega-update into smaller chunks and hopefully that will motivate me to get going again. Currently, not including the outline, I have about 1k words written, but it's out of order because I wanted to do the fun part first in hopes that it would motivate me.

--

I got some more work back from the artist I'm working with. He was a little busy this week so I didn't get the banner, but that's life. As requested, I got some neon and the title. Wanted to get input from everyone.

I'm torn on the covers. The first one doesn't look too awkward despite it being further upwards than I'd normally want. The second one is interesting, but I'd want to expand the capital A out a bit to make it more apparent that said letter is an A without causing the read to need to think about it. Also the corner of one level is covering the eye of the person in the signs and looks slightly awkward. I'd ask for something to be put in the other signs like some simple graphic, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with how everything has turned out.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

The second one is simply too forced and looks poor. The first one might be boring but looks better. The buildings in the background definitely need to be more riotously cyber punk though.

E: the font color probably shouldn't match the background building colors if it's going to be in the same spot. It should either move, change color, or the background buildings should change color.

I have a cap of 10 karma purchased this way per year and it's going to scale with income. Money is also a limiting factor. In this game, it's actually not too hard to get a hold of, but Sasha needs tuition and so does Oli. Sasha's tuition is largely paid for, but she's going to need a soft landing once she leaves school and that is going to require attention, money and developing contacts which will require even more attention and money. Oli is currently learning how to be a better artist so she might one day pay her own way and be a solid investment for Kenji. Not Julie really, her motivation was more emotionally driven. Oli's purpose on the island is to create art which can better help give him access to the school's wealthy and to the art world in general, because those are two communities that can accept his very poor self. And in the process, Oli has a chance to break away from the cycle of poverty that she was otherwise probably doomed to be in before she had magic and now that she has it, she can potentially make money doing what she wants rather than get shunted directly into the military or military adjacent job as that's what most of the public schools for magic are for.

At present, 10 karma would cost 15,000 nuyen for year two. That's actually not that bad, but year two is about change and investing in people will change the narrative. So for example, Diego's house is fixed and he can better provide for his kids, which means that they can process more food and create better armor. If we throw 80k at him for the next upgrade, The Club, his old, abandoned golf course clubhouse which he lives in, would turn into a minor settlement. Maybe some of the kids who left him as they got older come back to pitch in or he's taken in some of the former sex slaves from Carbonado after he killed the majority of those gang members in said town in book four. More kids get taken care of, Fuzzy has better access to gear and this signals to me what the thread cares about which means I'll explore this place in the story and I'll spotlight how it grows and changes. So in book six we'll see Fuzzy and maybe some others spend some time here in minor vignettes and she'll spend far more time there in book seven when it's her turn.

Anyway, money is easy to come by, but the teens already have obligations they need to meet which currently puts them in debt. After that if they're smart and driven they should be able to make more at some point, but upgrading contacts costs a lot of money for higher levels which changes the story and magical gear definitely costs a lot too.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that resources are accessible, but finite. And by keeping said resources finite it lets me know who cares about what based on how those resources are allocated, which informs me about what people care about so I can write about that instead of what people don't care about.

Apologies for radio silence. Been depressed lately. Also had some writer's block. When this happens I don't force it. I recoil back into myself for a while and consider what to do. Nothing too major. Just been laying low.

I've plotted out the rough plot from now until the ending in what I think is some very interesting and moving stuff. I want to have a satisfying ending and I think I got it.

I've been talking to Max, the guy who does the artwork. I've decided that in lieu of space I'm going to take the advice I got from the thread and just project the title into the sky. It'll look a little awkward up there, but live and learn. I'll talk to him about making space for titles in the future as I wasn't explicit when talking about placement of titles. It has been a while since I've managed artwork.

The banner is here though and I like it. I figure it'll be eye-catching on the website and at the top of the thread. Let me know what you think.

So when I have writer's block, I consume media. And I've been doing just that. I just burned through Cibola Burn and Nemesis Games. They're book four and five of the Expanse series of which I'm a big fan of both the books and the show. Burned through two books in four days and October marks the first time I've enjoyed a book in several years that wasn't audio. Reading was refreshing. Also it reminds me that I've definitely in need of improvement if I want to be up to that kind of caliber in terms of writing skill. Definitely suggest reading the books and watching the show if you're interested. The show closely follows the book, but honestly the writing is just so loving good in the book and the characters are just so loving good in the show. Do yourself a favor.

You can't take the Razorback. I am gone and gone and gone and gone.

That's all. Hopefully I'll be back to writing within the next few days.
