CYOA Time

What does Julie want to do? The odds are poor that she'll be let off the island for the rest of her story. So what does she fight for? What does she want to tell her friends? She's going to negotiate with angry, irrational people whose first instinct is to protect her.

Okay, we told the teachers. The teachers, being people, were overwhelmed and furious. They're mad and not entirely rational yet. We've given up freedom and choices for help from the adults that we trust.

Julie casts and gets 5 more logic. She maxes out her logic to remember what happened. However because those memories are leaving she doesn't get one for the first net hit. I spend edge and she gets 6 hits, so she gets 5 more memories. Honestly we're so close that for sake of expediency I'll say she remembers everything and has shared as much as she can remember.

Julie wants to go "home". Touristville. Right now she's realtively safe too, only four people know what she saw so if she can keep that to herself there's no reason she's not ok to walk around like normal. However, she's an ex-con, so if the authorities say to stay on the island she'll stay, she knows that you can't disobey the people that can make you squat and cough to check for contraband.

Still, she's willing to fight for her magical development to help her new family in the Underground. She's also willing to fight for her friends. She's especially worried about what happened to Kenji and how it's connected to LeBlanc. That jerk Christina had something to do with her future, she needs to get filled in on what Fuzzy's note means and how it connects to Kenji and Sasha. Also, who was the insubstantial man? Why couldn't she heal him, she's supposed to have big magic!

Is Mrs. Maureen ok?

How about this: Julie summons a spirit that takes the look of her father and acts like him, just without the racism. She was daddy's girl her entire life, so it's born from those positive experiences before she goblinized.

I’m feeling 1 -> 3 -> 1. Screw it if it messes up family life, Fuzzy knows how important it is to keep the pack together. Daves family needs to know whats up. And we can’t just meddle and leave Tek out to dry. If he changes his mind and wants out we need to help negotiate that.

Its cool, makes perfect sense in this context.

Actually, in hindsight, Tek should have known better than to lead with 'have sex with me', since he is supposed to be street smart.

I like the idea of spending this on Sasha - Fuzzy's Loyalty 6 Contact. Whether it's Matt pulling strings to get Sasha connected to a forum of expert greyhats who can offer her services, information, and training in an out-of-Ares favor economy, or Sasha getting enrolled in a police training program for mundane investigative techniques to holistically enhance her Assensing and cybersecurity skills, or whatever other direction Ice might want to take it in.

If we're looking at this as a test, I think that's the answer. It's pragmatic, because it's cultivating a resource that Fuzzy has access to. It's thoughtful, because it's showing she cares about Sasha in front of her whole family. And it's just plain nice, since Sasha just opened up to her family about how she felt like the odd one out in her internship.

What's everyone else think?

+1 to helping Sasha's connection.

Back Marco, with conditions. This isn't for corporate types that are into poverty porn. If someone wants to adopt they need to understand that supporting Rat Man afterwards is part of the deal. They can't just take a kid and forget about the Club.

Protective spirit summoning sounds neat, but it's an idea for later, not today.

Alright, this one is a little outside the box.

First of all, Fuzzy should send her bound Air spirit to go find Chip. This is the kind of situation where we need Julie - but more important's Chip's - help in. He should be a pretty distinctive spirit. Hopefully the Air Spirit can fly high, get a bird's eye view, and locate him. Hopefully he's not indoors. If/when the spirit finds Chip, the message he relays should be extremely simple. "EMERGENCY. SASHA AND FUZZY EMERGENCY."

Next, Fuzzy needs to send Kenji and Puppy to go protect Sasha. She doesn't need whatever's going on to be stopped - she just needs to trust that Kenji and Puppy are able to physically assure her safety. Puppy/Kenji should be faster getting to Sasha than a Fuzzy delayed by a fight and possibly an injury will be. That means they'll be better positioned to prevent harm from befalling her.

And in order to enable Kenji doing that, she needs to explain in clear and explicit terms that Kenji doing this is going to keep Fuzzy from getting to Sasha's cabin. Because Fuzzy's going to go get Marco. Fuzzy knows approximately where Marco should be right now (at his party), knows that she's going to need Marco to talk down Edward, knows that Marco is big and strong if someone needs to be physically restrained, and knows that Marco is the best student-healer on the island - Mother Bear's protege - if Sasha's hurt.

That way her crew's alerted, she has all the help she can get her hands on, and Kenji's succeeding at his assigned task of keeping Fuzzy from Sasha's cabin because if she fights him she'll have to go straight there instead of delaying to get Marco. Hopefully that's enough for Kenji. Hopefully that's enough for Sasha.

Hopefully this is a plan that Diego would be proud of.

What's everyone think?

While this is a cool and good idea, it's also metagamey, and not at all what Fuzzy would do.

+1 vote for kicking Kenjis rear end to unconsiousness and then running to save Sasha. This is what we've made our little heroine do all game long, there's no reason to change it now with clever tricks. It's something Kenji would do, not something Fuzzy would.

Kenji saves Sasha: Jagadaishio, Shogeton, Pumpinglemma, Sheep-Dodger, Justmakingchili, Rickvoid, CourValant, Cigaw,

Minutepiratebug: Voting to keep it close (Oh you)

KO Kenji wins. There were a number of ways to go about it. Kicking him in the dick was highest priority, but if Fuzzy leaves marks on him there are going to be questions. So she's going to follow up with some stun bolts. The spell that Sasha taught her to defend herself is ironically going to help save Kenji. At least in theory. I'm going to treat any negatives he has to willpower as extra damage.

Now it's time for the showdown. Anything can happen, though the odds are definitely stacked in Fuzzy's favor to win.

I was team KO Kenji, it that it changes the result

Does Sasha have any other family not in Ares?

What happens to Duncan and Beef?

How long can we live off of Sasha’s savings?

If we go to the barrens, how hard will it be to get to Diego without drawing attention to ourselves, like last time we visited with a full security detail?

Obviously Kenji works to build more contacts (and improve existing ones) over the summer. He probably gets to piss off some Corp parents as a fling while their princess slums it with him this summer - he could probably work out a decent place to stay from his girlfriend(s).

Minor action is to get a hobby. Bocce and red wine?

In the moment it would've felt right, but that moment passed and the rightness of that feeling fled along with it. He let the feeling go and let out a shuddering sigh some time later

"Yes, I have a class devoted to helping those with spirit mentors," explained Julian, "It can be a rough transition as you've seen. Without guidance you may lose yourself or find yourself on the wrong end of a power dynamic where Dog is the one in charge. My class is to assist you in understanding what is normal and what is not, how to control the compulsions that come with spirit mentors and how to properly set boundaries. Let me say that this is a good thing. It's rare for awakened such yourself to be chosen. You really must have shown some extreme feat of loyalty to earn Dog's attention."

Mechanically, how does this work? We saw how Firebringer dominated Julian earlier in this story, it’s probably one of the reasons he’s the one that teaches this class. He’s helping by showing young shaman how to avoid his mistakes.

If there’s not any crunch behind this, how are you handling it storywise? Social combat between mentor and mentee?

CYOA - yes, Kenji accepts the invitation. He seemed to handle them ok before Olisha showed up, and more contacts are better than less contacts. And yes, Kenji has had something like vending machine curry, so he kinda has had Indian food before.

Editing suggestion: this part has Julian repeating his greeting. Maybe it’s the exposition between his dialogue that threw this off.

“Hello everyone, sorry that I’m late,” said Julian, quickly, “I’m glad that everyone is here. Welcome to the first day of class. Please sit.”
[...]
“Hello everyone,” said Julian, “I’m glad to see most of last year’s faces back.”

I think part of your critique has to do with the serial nature of the story too. Ice will repeat things for the sake of new readers but if you binge the whole story it can be kinda repetitive. I find it useful to be reminded of things we learned previously, but I’ve been reading since the early part of the story and only had to binge a little bit. I dunno if that make sense, but I feel like it’s a stylistic choice to give context to the story in front of you without having to know the backstory.

Don’t worry about the parking ticket. I got one too last time I was in Seattle, despite putting my pass on my dash like it asked. I’m sure it was because of my out of state plates. I just emailed a copy of my pass to the contact info on the ticket, and it was taken care of. Be sure to do it quickly though, there was only a few weeks before I would have been out of luck.

“And I imagine that much would be hard to remove,” said Julie.
