It's to show that he hasn't changed and him telling Saru to get permission from Starfleet was his way of definitely not going after the admiral instead of actually having changed, as he tried to convince her of. When she couldn't tell if it was the real him, it wasn't. The phaser is to tell us that.

He should have a monologue to explain it to the viewers. While looking at the camera. With charts and graphs. :v:

But then I'm sure some people still wouldn't get it :negative:

Well, Burnham might start bring likable now (oh god please). Saru is cool, and so is the engineer. Tilly fluctuates between likable and Neelix. The captain is, perhaps not likable, but compelling and I'm enjoying his performance. There's a lot going for this show.

That nebula looked loving ridiculous. Little scattered patches of high chroma red, green and blue, really? I've seen every APOD pic for years and never saw a nebula like that, not even with crazy false color enhancement. Also I just realized it would look white from a far enough distance.

Yeah this is something I've never cared about. Of course it's not going to look like an ugly rear end show from 1967.

They throw in bits like a lot of the props, and some small homages like that weird grate thing in everyone's quarters that Lorca had a version of (but his isn't painted a bizarre orange). Good enough for me.

Any sci-fi nebula is bullshit anyway. If you were actually in a nebula it would effectively look as black as the rest of space does, to us. The only reason they look so colorful through telescopes after long exposure is because you're seeing tens to hundreds of light years of space compressed into perhaps a few arc-seconds of viewable area.

But like 'asteroid fields,' it's not really about the scientific accuracy of the phenomenon, it's about using said phenomenon as a storytelling element. So really, who cares?

It had the best character arc, fighting the good fight against its evil oppressors, then escaping to freedom after reaching its lowest point.

Also it killed some of the worst characters on the show. If only it had killed Lorca and Tilly when it had the chance it would forever be remembered in canon.

In Greek mythology, the river Lethe caused forgetfulness; thus relevant to both Sarek and Lorca repressing past traumas and most of the episode taking place in Sarek's memories.

Also possibly a hint that if Tyler is Voq, he's got false memories and doesn't remember he's Klingon?

My new running theory is that he's got some sort of implanted personality of Voq in him that will come out at the right time - Ash Tyler was and is still human. But who knows, really. It could all be a red herring.

It's gonna take a lot of work to get Burnham into a "likable" state, but at least we're slowly going toward "maybe somewhat interesting I suppose" with each character development.

Saru is really cool, classic Trek, and I want a Saru-themed episode pronto.

Tilly is just Neelix all the way down.

Lorca is a fascist and I really dislike him, but as a character he's becoming a great pseudo-villain. I'll be fine with this as long as they don't turn him into an antihero, thereby vindicating his fascism. I do really like Jason Isaacs though and he's selling it well -- and it helps to know that even if Lorca has reprehensible ideologies, Isaacs is pretty much your standard outspoken Hollywood lefty.

Stamets is cool but I hope they tune down the loopy Redditness from the last episode. Hopefully that's just a side effect of his tripping on shrooms.

Doctor NicePecs is pretty one-dimensional (and I still don't know his actual name) but he's also only been in like two episodes so far.

I know all that, but it's still no reason to make it look like no nebula ever.
