Bloody Elbow posted:

Punk’s coach Duke Roufus revealed that they are back in training camp, getting ready for the next fight. No date has been specified, but in a recent appearance on UFC Unfiltered, Roufus believes Punk had learned a lot from the previous fight.

“(UFC President Dana White) and the matchmakers had their weekly matchmaking meeting yesterday, and we’ll get some news soon,” Roufus said (transcript via MMA Junkie). “I just think the first time you step in the octagon, there’s something special you’ve got to deal with getting in there. For Punk, this sounds really weird, but now he knows what a beating feels like – a real beating.”

quote:

“You don’t want to feel that depressing, embarrassing feeling of getting beat up in front of God and everyone. It’s no fun. It’s been great motivation for him.”

When asked which Pokemon he evolved into, Kamara pauses.

"Motherfucking, what's that big dragon shit? That orange motherfucker. Charizard."

GSP turned his extreme cowardice and fear of being humiliated again into one of the greatest championship reigns ever, so maybe they’re on to something.

Punk will likely get his rear end beat again but I give the guy props for going about things the right way and at least trying.

I fully support a "MMA old" guy going for it, but I'm amazed they aren't getting him some proper pro wins on amateur circuits first.

While he looked physically fit and willing - his first outing was exactly what a street fight between a MMA fighter and a gym rat would look like.

I don't know if I would necessarily call co-headlining with zero professional/amateur fights the 'right way' of doing it.

The whole thing has been rear end backwards. The attempt at a cash grab was more important than bringing him slowly.

It genuinely baffles me that the UFC didn't put Punk on one of their innumerable Fight Pass feeder league shows. Have him fight 0-0 Manny "The Mauler" Maskowicz at Wild Bill's Fight Night like a debuting dude is supposed to, advertise him and use him to drum up subscriptions rather than blowing him up for a tiny bump in your buyrate when he was never going to be a big draw or top-level fighter in the first place.

We are only working with about a sixty second sample - does his fight camp say anything about him other than, "Uh, he is real, real gritty?"

Unless he had the worst case of jitters ever, he fought like a meathead on day one in a gym.

Duke tells him to go for the punch immediately right before Punk enters the octagon. I guess the strategy was Gall wouldn’t expect any offense from him out the gate.

Well he did that, it was incredibly telegraphed, and it turned into how could grapple better. There’s no a single person on the UFC roster that would get out grappled by Punk.

Happens at heavyweight sometimes. Guy is an athlete in some other sport, starts MMA late, has a few amateur fights before jumping into the UFC. But HW is its own crazy universe.

Even Kimbo Slice had to fight an actual UFC caliber fighter. The only guy even close would be Matt Mitrione who had a great athletic background (Punk does not) and he was in his early 30s when he debuted. Punk has no fighting background, he's old and all he has is his name value. Even still they had to sign a guy with one fight (two by the time he fought Punk) to fight him. They brought him in as easily as they could and he still got destroyed.
