Caps lineup looking like

Ovi-Kuzy-Vrana
Burakovsky-Backstrom-Oshie
Connolly-Eller-Wilson
Chiasson?-Beagle-DSP

Orlov-Niskanen
Djoos?-Carlson
Orpik-Bowey?

Holtby
Grubauer

They can get some poo poo done with the Top 6, but that bottom 6 + Orpik and the bottom pairing does not inspire confidence. Chorney's probably the 7D.

I'm also curious just how awful that second PP unit is going to be if Kuzy takes the MoJo slot on PP1.

I’m still holding out hope for Walker above DSP and hope they don’t decide to send Bowey down to protect Ness (nobody will claim him). Will Tom Wilson’s suspensions save us cap space? If so it could be a blessing.

I guess it's possible since Bowey is waiver-exempt, but Trotz is pretty regimented about not playing d-men on their off side, and Bowey is the only one with the right-handed shot.

Walker is more of a realistic possibility, but this is the NHL, and I just don't see how they don't prioritize grit and experience or whatever. I also think DSP has more of a (admittedly marginal) scoring upside.

I guess we find out today! Just bought tickets to the game against the Rangers in December. Hello $11 beers...

The lines in the first Caps practice. 2 players still to be cut.

Andre Burakovsky – Nicklas Backstrom – TJ Oshie
Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Jakub Vrana
Brett Connolly – Lars Eller – Alex Chiasson
Tyler Graovac – Jay Beagle – Devante Smith-Pelly
Nathan Walker – Chandler Stephenson – Tom Wilson

Dmitry Orlov – Matt Niskanen
Brooks Orpik – John Carlson
Aaron Ness – Taylor Chorney
Christian Djoos – Madison Bowey

DSP, Chiasson, Ness appear to be in. Djoos and Walker SHOULD be in, but Trotz hates rookies.

From the Post's reporting on the Caps' awful third pairing:

quote:

“The thing with us, the young guys are going to be the foundation of our whole organization,” Trotz said last week. “We’re excited about the fact, you know, we’re going to infuse some young guys here as we keep going along. Right now, we just want to stabilize it. Right now, on defense for instance, we’re going to stabilize it with a little more of a veteran part of the roster to start. Because the first part of the season, especially the first three or four games or matches, are a little hairy. They’re really ramped up because everyone is so excited. I think it gives our veteran guys — they’ve gone through it a few times — we’re hoping that’ll just help settle it down. Once we get rolling and it settles down a little bit, I think it gives our younger guys an opportunity to feel comfortable.

“This is the point for young guys when they make a hockey team, now they’re going, ‘Okay, I made the hockey team and now I’ve got to find a place to live, and I’ve got to do this.’ There’s a lot going on that people don’t think about. ‘You know, hey, throw the kid in.’ There’s a little bit more going on because they have to start dealing with life things. I think it just allows them to settle in, get comfortable. We’ve got a lot of games, they’re going to be a huge part of what we’re doing here.”

I'm not sure how Ness and Chorney are "stabilizing" anything getting minors left and right and playing less than 10 minutes a game.

Play the rookies, Trotz.

He's not really. Tampa plays 7 D and rotates guys around. Girardi got 15 minutes last night with 54 seconds of PK time and no PP time. Hedman got 26 minutes last night with 4:36 in PP time and 2:39 PK time.

Even taking away special teams play Hedman got almost 5 minutes more icetime than Girardi so they clearly aren't a "pairing" in the traditional sense and Girardi isn't getting the minutes that he got with the Rangers. Stralman and Hedman still got the vast majority of D minutes, though Girardi was 4th with those 15 minutes.

Girardi's problem is also always his puck handling. If you play a system that allows him to easily chip it to a teammate, then he's not going to look nearly as bad. He struggles to make any plays more complicated than "throw it up the wall" so if you can work with that then he'll look fine, if you can't then he'll look terrible.

The Bolts transition game is a lot of passing, but again, I guess you can make up for that by pairing him with dudes who can actually dish the puck.

I was a poor college student during Ovechkin's rookie year and I went to like 10-15 games for like $8 a piece. It owned living near a Metro station because I could literally just walk to the station and be at the arena in like 30 minutes if I wanted something to do that night on a whim.

I'd go to more Lightning games now that I live in the Tampa Bay area, but (a) the tickets are more expensive now that the Lightning are good/fun, and (b) I hate having to drive into downtown Tampa (even though the arena location is nice, I would kill to have some sort of decent public transit).

Yeah I would go Caps games all the time as a poor undergrad student. The girl's hockey team at AU would partner with them for fundraising too, so I could get lower bowl seats for like $25. And those were the golden Ovie years too, when defensemen didn't know what to do against him and he was constantly scoring on the rush. So much fun.

On the topic of (formerly) cheap seats in Washington... Might be an embarrassing turnout for the nationally-televised game tonight. RMNB reports 1,900 tickets still available for the Caps game against the Pens. They were also doing a promo for two tickets and two t-shirts for $88 too.

The Nats game being tonight probably hurts interest some, but I think the big thing is the prices. I know it's all relative and that price is pretty golden for a Canadian team, but a $100 night out at least is a bit of an ask for an early-season Wednesday game, even if it is against the dudes who just shook Trump's hand.

6. It’s no secret Washington is looking for defencemen. Everyone talks Vegas, but the Capitals and Golden Knights couldn’t make a Philipp Grubauer trade to protect Nate Schmidt in the expansion draft, so I don’t know how easy it will be. Yeah Trotz is in his 4th year in Washington which is a long time in the NHL.

I don't necessarily think it's Trotz's fault the team has stunk this year but I'm also not sure he's the guy to lead the team to a Cup especially a team that has significantly more youth than prior years. He's never been good dealing with younger players and he's never really shown an ability to do much tactically in the playoffs. Sullivan has outcoached him two years in a row in the playoffs.

Maybe the team turns it around but it really looks like they may have started to give up. All of their possession metrics are way down this year and it looks like they are kind of just improvising. A new coach might be a good thing.

I don't know what a new coach solves necessarily though? There's still a solid core there in Ovechkin/Backstrom/Oshie/Kuznetsov/Burakovsky/Niskanen/Orlov/Holtby, but the top dudes aren't going to be getting better than they already are. Maybe a new coach would be better with the young guys, but the talent ceiling on their prospect pool just isn't high enough to make much difference.

But maybe I've just been conditioned by Dale Hunter and Adam Oates to fear coaching changes. They at least have to give Trotz this year to see if we can luck our way in before you blow it all up or resign yourself to bubble team hell until Ovechkin and Backstrom retire.
