I don't get what the Red Wings did this offseason. They won 33 games last year and they didn't really *do* anything this offseason, except not signing AA.

At least the Canucks made a bunch of savvy UFA signings.

Are this year's Rangers the least Canadian team in NHL history? Of their 23-man roster, only five are Canadian - Nash, Desharnais, Smith, Staal, and Holden. One of those will be an extra on opening night.

Nah, from what I've seen the Rangers are the total opposite - they rely a lot on speed to help them with their counterattacking, score-off-the-rush style, and they struggle to get zone time or at least convert zone time into shots. If Vigneault is old school it seems like it's mostly roster management (favoring veterans over young guys) and not believing particularly strongly in playing a puck possession game.

Looks like Cracknell slows down the shot rate in general, both for and against? I mean, I guess that's what you'd expect from an average grinder who plays against bottom six and tends to dump-and-chase, cycle, and grind it out. Seems like it might be a useful option for that 12th forward until Fast gets back. If not, just double-shift Zuccarello, who led the team with 22:00 TOI last game.

Hey fancystat people, I have a question for you.

Is there anywhere that breaks down shooting percentage by strength/situation? I'm thinking that being able to look at 5v5 and 5v4 shooting percentages would be a convenient/easy way to guess future goal scoring, at a glance. NHL.com has the stats, but not in an easily-viewable format. I want to see it per player (all years), not one season at a time.

For example, comparing two 15-goal scorers who took 100 shots, I want to see:
Player 1) 15 ESG, 100 ESS, 15% ES shooting
Player 2) 8 ESG, 64 ESS, 12.5% ES shooting | 7 PPG, 36 PPS, 19.4% PP shooting

Five thoughts:

1) Despite the other defenders looking like a dumpster fire much of the time, Shattenkirk has been on the ice for most of the goals against the Rangers. I'm not sure he belongs on a top defensive pair, but I'm apprehensive - to say the least - that Marc Staal can keep up his play and earn that spot.

2) Kampfer and Holden managed to make a lot of mistakes, but not pay the price. Hopefully both are out of the lineup next game, because the shutout against the Habs wasn't a credit to the Rangers defense.

3) Steve Kampfer managed to high stick two guys on one swing of the stick, I've never seen that before.

4) The fourth line hasn't been bad, but Adam Cracknell and Paul Carey are very much marginal players who can't slot in anywhere else in the lineup for even a shift. Jimmy Vesey looked great in the top nine tonight, and Jesper Fast's return will also give them a player who brings good all-around play anywhere in the lineup. Still, I'm thankful the fourth line doesn't have a Chris Thorburn or Andreas Martinsen .

5) Mika Zibanejad has already matched his career high in power play goals, at 4. He's shooting a lot more, hitting the net more, and playing more minutes. It's strange to think, but before being put in this role, his career high in shots was 184 - he should easily be be topping 200, and well exceeding that. Last year only 119 of 226 shot attempts were on goal, but perhaps this reflects on the Rangers last year. It's crazy to think that a year ago they had Brandon Pirri pulling the trigger and dishing sloppy passes to Zbad instead of Shattenkirk and Buchnevich. The quality of play there is just so much better than last year. I suspect the frequent missed one-timers were partially a product of lesser passers on the power play unit.

Five thoughts:

1) Rangers seem to have settled on defensive pairings, and Tony D looks good with McDonagh, with Shattenkirk and McD picking up extra shifts. I think the permanent spot for Shatty might be the third pairing, first power play, and some extra shifts. Smith and DeAngelo seem to be getting the short end of the extra shifts, which also seems right.

2) Marc Staal has been surprisingly good. He has been confident going deep in the offensive zone, and not a mess in his own zone. He seems to be adapting to the unstructured offensive play that is in vogue right now. No guarantee of how long this lasts, but it's nice to see him playing well.

3) AV seems to be at the other end of that. He has been a master of set plays and certain aspects of structured plays, but his team looks both completely unguided and unable to adapt to any sort of imaginative play.

4) Not even Zucc, who is normally the most creative playmaker on the team. He has been invisible at times, while the rest of the team has looked stoned in the neutral zone. Take that whatever way you want.

5) Rangers scored a goal that was eventually overturned while Andrew Ladd tried to fight Jimmy Vesey. He also tried to sucker punch Vesey while the Rangers while celebrating. In the season of penalties, it is unusual that the Islanders only earned one tonight, as the refs swallowed their whistles towards much of what has been called this year.
