Only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck and still keep your attitude on self destruct

This is a dark age, a bloody age, an age of daemons and of sorcery. It is an age of battle and death, and of the world’s ending. Amidst all of the fire, flame, and fury it is a time, too, of mighty heroes, of bold deeds and great courage.

At the heart of the Old World sprawls the Empire, the largest and most powerful of the human realms. Known for its engineers, sorcerers, traders, and soldiers, it is a land of great mountains, might rivers, dark forests, and vast cities. And from his throne in Altdorf reigns the Emperor Karl Franz, sacred descendant of the founder of these lands, Sigmar, and wielder of his magical Warhammer.

But these are far from civilized times. Across the length and breadth of the Old World, from the knightly palaces of Bretonnia to ice-bound Kislev in the far north, come rumblings of war. In the towering World’s Edge Mountains, the orc tribes are gathering for another assault. Bandits and renegades harry the wild southern lands of the Border Princes. There are rumors of rat-things, the Skaven, emerging from the sewers and swamps across the land. And from the northern wildernesses there is the ever-present threat of Chaos, of daemons and beastmen corrupted by the foul powers of the Dark Gods. As the time of battle draws ever near, the Empire needs heroes like never before.

All of you grew up listening to stories of the Great War Against Chaos. The tale of Magnus the Pious and his victory over the armies of Chaos is well known. While there have been wars and threats in the 200 years since, there has been nothing on that scale. Until now. This year the Chaos Lord Archaon invaded the Empire with five mighty armies. They swept down from the Chaos Wastes, ranks filled with mutant warriors, nightmarish monsters, and power-mad sorcerers. Flagellants and other prophets of doom declared these the End Times. And as these armies pillaged and burned their way through the northern provinces of the Empire, it was easy to believe.

You’ve heard endless stories over the past few months. They say that Sigmar once again walked the earth. They say an army of wolves attacked the Kislevian city of Erengrad. They say the dead rose from their graves to defend the Empire. They say a mighty victory was won at Middenheim. They say a plague has choked the streets of Talabheim with bloated corpses.

You can only believe what is in front of your eyes. You have just arrived at Holzbeck, a small town in the Drakwald Forest where travelers purchase goods from local farms and smiths. A nine-day battle took place here, as Beastmen tried to force their way across the town’s great bridge. They were rebuffed but the price was high. The town is in ruins and its remaining citizens struggle to survive. The Imperial army has long since moved on from Holzbeck, leaving behind only its dead. You’ve heard tell of more battles up north but the war here seems over. Or so you hope.

===============================

This is the Recruiting OOC thread for Blood & Darkness, an adventure for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 2nd Edition. Yes, another one. It is heavily based on the Through the Drakwald introductory and the Paths of the Damned campaign, but with some modifications that seek to make things less railroad-y. Instead of being told to "go here, do that," PCs will have more freedom to do what want (and be encouraged to do so). For example, rather than being forced to join a convoy out of town in the beginning of the adventure, they will have the chance to explore the town they are in, seek out quests and encounters in and around the town, or move straight to leaving the town and heading to Middenheim.

Character creation will follow the process outlined in Chapter 2 of the core rulebook. To avoid ending up with a party of five rat catchers, I want you to select races and careers that you are interested in. I will not be rolling random careers. I strongly encourage role-playing and PCs interacting with each other, so if you're a Human Noble, you're probably not going to hit it off right away with a Dwarf Pit Fighter or Halfling Thief. Any of the careers from the career compendium are permissible save for those foreign to the Empire; (the Kislevite Kossar, for example). If you want to play a foreign character, you will have to ask me for permission. I will be taking 4 to 6 characters with a balanced party composition in terms of concepts and talents.

In addition to your career trappings, you start with:

common clothing consisting of a shirt, breeches, and worn boots
a tattered cloak
a dagger tucked in a boot or belt
a sling bag or a backpack containing a blanket
a wooden tankard
a wooden cutlery set
a hand weapon (axe, club, sword, etc.)
a purse holding 2d10 Gold Crowns (gc)

Warning: this is my first time GMing a play-by-post game and the last time I attempted this it died after getting hung up in combat (I wasn't prepared for tactical maps). I now have Dungeon Painter Studio to whip up custom maps in a breeze to use for maps. I'll also be using Orokos for dice rolls and ask you to do the same (or some other Web site that saves dice rolls).

Character background is required. Two paragraphs describig history and personality is sufficient. Alternatively, your character can answer the following questions from pages 21-22 in the core rulebook:

1. Where are you from?
2. What is your family like?
3. What social class do you belong to?
4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
5. Why did you become an adventurer?
6. How religious are you?
7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?
8. What are your prized possessions?
9. Who are you loyal to?
10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?

I will be making a decision on approved applications at 9 PM EST on Monday, October 9.

1. Where are you from?
A small farm, a day's ride north of Carroburg. The village of Pendleton, tucked away in a wooded vale.

2. What is your family like?
Well, Dad runs the farm, of course, and my older brother is his right hand man. He's gonna inherit it, after all. Ma is ma. She runs the clan with an iron hand... well, iron ladle to the side of the head. Older sister married the miller. So he don't cheat us too much any more. Hah, I kid, he's a good man. For a miller. My youngest brother... much younger. Ten years younger than me, always the baby. No matter how big he got. We all try to look after him. He went down to Carroburg to become a soldier when the war started. And me... I got a wife and three kids. Good lads. Oldest is 14, he's already pulling his weight out at the farm.

3. What social class do you belong to?
Peasant through and through. We've got a leasehold on the farm, been in the family for hundreds of years. Get to farm in exchange for rent and a piece of the harvest. And labor on his lordship's lands.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
Well, I know the land around here like the back of my hand. Been in the roadwarden band here for over 10 years. Except when I got to help with the harvest, of course.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?
Adventure? Every day is an adventure in the roadwardens. Sort of. Things are pretty quiet around here. Well, were. Before the war. Lately, we've been having to escort mobs of refugees south, and supply caravans up north. But that's all done. Anyway, I'm just off looking for my young brother. His company got sent off to Middenheim to hold the walls during the siege and we haven't heard from him since. Course, when the captain of the Roadwarden band, found out I was haring off to Middenheim to search for my brother, he was not happy But since I was resolved to do it, would I perhaps look for his nephew? And then word got around, and now I got a list of a dozen villagers too go look for up at the front.

6. How religious are you?
What... what kind of question is that? I pray to Taal when I'm in the woods, Sigmar when I'm in town. Shallya for the sick, Morr for the dead. I pray to Verena when there's justice to mete out, and to Ulric when there's killing to be done.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?
Well, Captain Leland and I go way back, to when we were kids. And the other lads of the band... I trust them with my life, of course. Even if we're not always friends. Shame, most of them were drafted to go off with Baron von Stricht. I'll keep an eye out for them up north, too. Enemies? Well, there's the damned Meier clan. Bastards. We've been feuding with them as long as anyone can remember. Bunch of puffed up guttersnipes. Ever since Rutger got himself made the bailiff, they've been lording it up over everyone. Oh, wait, no, bandits, right? I should say bandits.

8. What are your prized possessions?
My home, I guess? It's where I keep my family. A man'd do much to protect his home, pile of wood and stone that it is. Poor refugees, losing everything. Still, war's over, right? Time for them to go home, to rebuild.

9. Who are you loyal to?
The captain, of course. And the roadwardens. We stick together. I guess we technically work for the Elector Count, old Todbringer himself. We swear to keep his roads open, to do justice in his name. He's supposed to be a decent enough sort, for a noble, I guess. The Emperor? Over Reikland-way? Don't see what he's got to do with it. This is Middenland.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?
My family, of course. My wife, my kids. Hate to leave them behind, but it's just for a little while. Love my little brother, too, which is why we got to find him, bring him home. Hate? Bandits, beasts, toll evaders. Bastards who want to make the roads unsafe for honest folk.

In another life Ellie Liston would have been born to rich human family in Altdorf, been raised by her guild master father to become one of the finest physicians the Empire had ever seen, and stepped up from the masses to save the world from some cataclysmic event. But this isn't another life and Ellie's upbringing involved quite a lot more shoveling horse poo poo from her father's stable than her illustrious imaginary self had to experience.

The Moot, as it turns out, is not particularly accommodating to the young woman following her passions of discovering how the body works. Ellie's wasn't exactly chased out of her homeland with torches and pitchforks, but it was made very clear her welcome had worn thin.

Her first years as a cast out were particularly hard, but a Halfling outside the Moot needs to adapt quickly or be trodden underfoot. Drifting from back alley doctors to disgraced physicians that had erred a little too far into malpractice, and even invoking the legal right for a mutant on the chopping block to be examined by a medical professional, Ellie began to absorb the knowledge she needed to make a life doing what she loved.

Today we find her standing on an overturned apple crate in front of a run down shack she's paid far too much to rent, hawking herself to all that would risk the services of an unlicensed medical practitioner. "Madam! Those boils could be gone! 15 pennies and mere minutes of your time!" A lancing needle appears in her hand, swiftly drawn from a leather satchel "No? Then you sir! That hand looks ready to fall off, why not have someone who knows what they're doing lop it off cleanly!? Merely 5 silver for my time."

It took quite some time for Ellie's unnerving attempt at drawing a crowd to finally snag a customer, but with the first fish reeled word quickly begins to spread that she's not just some charlatan out to murder innocent people. Money slowly trickles in and by the end of day she finally has enough coin to move on from the ramshackle town she's been stuck in.

Having been able to throw off the metaphorical shackles of yet another Podunk town, Ellie shuffles on in hopes of finding a more reliable source of patients. As rumor would have it the town of Holzbeck was having trouble with some sort of invading force, and where there was conflict there would be folk desperate to spend their coin on treatment.

There he is!

Hanz Batalor, Imperial Halberdier

Hanz Batalor has served in the Imperial Army since a young age, a proud tradition in the family dating back three generations. The Batalors are a cadet branch of a noble family in Altdorf, which meant that Hanz's older brothers joined the Imperial Cavalry and eventually the Reichsguard. However, there was much less influence and coin to go around when the youngest son of a youngest son came of age, and so he enlisted in the State Troopers. He has served time in almost every branch of the Imperial Infantry at one point or another, and is a capable archer, swordsman and halberdier. Once, in what seems liked a lifetime ago to him now, he had dreams of working his way up to the Greatswords, perhaps even the Imperial Foot and joining his brothers in the Reichsguard.

Then the war happened. Hanz had faced beastmen before, in small raids during the routine patrols. But nothing in his experiences during those patrols or in his service in the petty wars of the Empire prepared him for the horrors he faced at Holzbeck. The air filled with arrows first - and he fired a great many himself, and the Beastmen came still. Then they advanced down the bridge and were met with a wall of Halberds and Spears, but the beasts shattered the poles with their bodies and still more pressed in. Eventually, it was a bloody grinder that lasted for over a week of nearly incessant fighting. They won.

Hanz was the only survivor from his regiment. The Imperial Army moved on, but he was left behind as part of a clean up operation and rear guard. He has spent that time burying his comrades, and paying anyone with pen, ink and a literate hand to pen letters to the towns and villages they came from. To send word, and whenever he can give words of praise for those he saw. Dreams of glory seemed very far away now.

He heard that there was a big battle up near Middenheim. A victory. He has no officer, no regiment and no idea what to do. Perhaps he should travel to Middenheim - perhaps he could meet up with his brothers there, or find word of their passing...

Since I got excited there for a second, I will ask for permission to play a Kislevite Apprentice Witch. She was sent to the Empire to scout the state of its leylines, the spread of Ice Magic, and as an envoy to the local colleges of magic. It probably was meant as preparation for this War the Ice Witches feared was coming, but she's not been in the Empire for long when it actually broke out. Now she's trying to help the war effort as best as she can without raising suspicion in a country where the Ice Witches and their magic are virtually unknown.

Pillbug

Gerrhart Grier

Gerrhart stared into the collection plate, expressionless. 19 golden coins. He hadn't seen that much money in a church for years, not since his time as a temple guard back home. Gods, Wissenberg. How long had it been since he'd last seen home? Had his brother Frederick finally taken full ownership of the family smithy, or did Father still insist that he wasn't ready to retire? And had either of those two fools remembered to even visit Mother's grave, Morr rest her soul?

He'd joined the Church of Sigmar and entered the Order of the Silver Hammer as soon as he was old enough to pass for a man. He wanted no part of that drat smithy, and Father was devout enough that he wouldn't complain about having a son join the cloth instead of slaving over the forge. But as selfish as his motives for joining the Church had been at the time, he quickly found the faith to be exactly what he'd always needed. Soon enough he was traveling far and wide, preaching and smiting evil in the name of Sigmar. He gained a reputation for courage, faith, and (by Wissenland's terse, dour standards) eloquence. To cultists, mutants, or beastmen, of course, the arrival of a bald man with a hammer and a hymn on his lips was all they needed to know exactly what they were dealing with. He'd fended off a few pre-emptive attacks in his day. Oftentimes he hadn't even known there was a cult in the area until they helpfully revealed themselves by trying to kill him.

And now, after five years after leaving home, on the eve of disaster, he was finally feeling a little homesickness. Far too late now. His course was set. The man who'd dropped all the coins into the collection plate coughed impatiently, and Gerrhart snapped out of his introspection with a start. The man was a noble, although he'd seen better days; his clothing was ripped and stained with mud. "Please," said the man in a trembling voice, "tell me. Tell me Sigmar will save us. I've... I've not been the most pious man for most of my life, but that's all I have. Please."

Gerrhart looked around the church. It was stripped bare. Any wooden object had been chopped up and removed for use in the barricades. All that was left was the humble altar, and the hammer laying upon it. This was no gilded artifact, just a spare hammer the village had on hand to serve as a symbol of Sigmar. It warmed his heart to see such simple, pure piety. It almost cheered him enough to make up for the illness he felt at this pathetic man's attempt to buy salvation. All his life, he'd been used to coin getting him whatever he wanted, and now he thought it would save him. He hated it. He hated everyone who expected someone else to save them, but would never lift a hand in someone else's defense. Gerrhart fixed his eyes on the noble and shook his head.

"Every hand in this village mans the barricades, and you come begging to the Gods now, with the hordes on our doorstep? Would you have given so generously if you weren't trapped here? Would you have given at all? Desperation is not faith. Determination is faith. When I heard that the Beastmen were coming, I came here willingly, and did all I could to prepare these people for war. I love Sigmar. I love the Empire. I love every man, woman, and child who will lift a hand to defend his or her neighbors. Your gold is no substitute for what Sigmar truly demands. He demands courage. He loathes cowardice. Nothing more or less. And in return, we have a promise: Sigmar will save those who save themselves. We survive or die together, on our own merits."

Gerrhart drew his hammer and kissed it. The parting gift from Father. He still remembered the man's last words to him: "The finest work I ever made, Gerrhart. May it serve you well." It was nothing but an ordinary warhammer, and yet Father hadn't lied. Gerrhart held it dearer than anything else in this world. With his free hand, he lifted the other hammer from the altar and set it down at the noble's feet. Outside, he heard the alarm bells ringing. The time had come.

"Do you want to be saved? Then take up that hammer and follow me."

---

The battle for Holzberg was over now, and Gerrhart sifted through the remains of the church. There: the body slumped over the spilled collection plate, hammer in hand. He died defending his gold, and he took no beastmen with him. A fitting eulogy; Sigmar grant that a similar end won't befall the Empire. Gerrhart scooped the blood-sticky coins into his pouch and left, humming a hymn to himself. The gold would get him a little closer to the front lines, he hoped. He'd heard good things about Middenheim. He didn't expect to find greatness; far from it, he expected to die unceremoniously and unmourned. But if he bought the Empire even a second more to prepare itself for the coming storm, it would be worth it. And if he didn't, at least he wouldn't die a coward.

Johann Altenhof, Ratcatcher

1. Where are you from?

Nuln, born and raised. None o' that rich part, neither.

2. What is your family like?

Me da were killed in battle when we was young. Can't hardly remember him. Me and me sisters, we was raised by our Mam. She were a rough ol' harridan, and ain't that the truth. Me sisters spread out now - I had a right lot of 'em, see. Only boy in the whole family, and there was ten of us. I'm the youngest, at that. Y'ever get tired of being the baby boy? I do. But hey, me sisters are good girls. Tough an' strong, as they should be. Ain't none of us stayed in Nuln - marriage, jobs, criminal records, that kind o' thing. Me eldest sister, Leona, she works as a maid at the wizards' colleges, an' me fourth sister, Enid, she's got pull in the criminal underground in Stirland. My closest sister, Julia, she's married to an innkeep.

3. What social class do you belong to?

Common as muck, guv.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?

Caught rats. An' don't let no one tell you that ain't work. I seen things you ain't never believe. Rats the size of men. They tell you there's no skaven, guv? Only reason I don't say they're lyin' is that I don't want to end up in the madhouse.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?

Bit o' misunderstanding, that. See, I was doin' my job, working with some of them Sewer Jacks. Good lads. But I end up chasing the rats up a garderobe - that's fancy talk for the shitter, see? - and I end up coming up face to face with a rich merchant havin' it on with a nobleman's wife. Well, I weren't gonna say nothing, but seems like they didn't trust me, like. So I decided, best to leave town. I'd be happy to set up in some other city, but it takes time to learn the sewers, yeah? And you don't toughen up 'fore you do, you die.

6. How religious are you?

I been known to say a prayer or two. Can't rightly curse properly if you don't pay your respects.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?

I'm a Guild man. Guild of Rat Catchers, aye. Ain't no better lot in the whole of the Empire than our band o' brothers. Them and my sisters, they're my best friends. Worst enemies? Scabs. Scabs and skaven. Each as bad as t'other. Skaven's what you get when a rat gets uppity. Scabs are what you get when a man's as bad as a rat, won't pay his drat dues.

Oh, and Talbot, here. Best dog as ever lived. He's me best friend.

8. What are your prized possessions?

Well, Talbot, aye. And me da's ol' medal. S'all I have to remember him by, aye? That and our Mam's ring. Ain't much to look at, no, but they's mine.

9. Who are you loyal to?

Family first. After family, yer guild. They's almost family anyway. After that, yer empire. Not none o' them nobles, like, they's just rich idiots. But Sigmar left us this place to take care of, and we do that right enough. Even me.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?

Well, I carry a bit o' a torch for this Tilean lass I met at market. She's a merchant's daughter, though, Maria Esparanza, and she don't rightly need to give me time o' day. Her father certainly don't. Maria, though, she's always time for me. Listens to me stories, like, when I see her. Hope I can find her da's caravan on this trip. She prob'ly ain't interested, though, an' that's fair, like. Hate's a harsh word, and I don't like to use it much. But there ain't many low-down sons o' bitches worse'n me dear ol' brother-in-law, Franz. He done beat my sister, 'til she left to strike it out on her own. That'd be Leona, like. They's still married, technically like. But you let me near him and they won't be - if you catches my meaning.

Royalty is a continuous cutting motion

Here we go:
Marina Morsley, Physician's Assistant Second Class

Marina is short, skinny, kind, and irrepressibly perky. She has abosolutely no place on the battlefield. Fortunately for her, she's been behind the battle line for her entire participation in the War. Unfortunately for her, the hospitals and camps behind the battle line are barely nicer places, what with the blood and sobbing, but she's as committed as any Sister of Shallya to healing the wounded and sick, so there she was. At least, until the War ended. Now she's heading back to Altdorf with a sack full of letters sealed with wax doves, while the rest of the Sisters try and keep some semblance of order and health in the wake of the biggest war in recent memory. Well, she's always liked traveling.

1. Where are you from?
Marina is from Altdorf, and like most people from Altdorf, she won't shut up about it. Not the slums, thankfully, but not the rich part of town either. She joined the Order of the Dove after she was orphaned.

2. What is your family like?
Unlike many Shallyans, Marina wasn't orphaned young, but late in her childhood -- her parents died of plague when she was nine, and frankly no one was willing or able to take her in. Marina's extended family are all middle class townsmen, mostly trade- and guildsmen, but her uncle Hamig is doing very well for himself as a merchant.

3. What social class do you belong to?
While her family is middle class, Marina doesn't interact with them much. The Cult is very big on total devotion, and she's drunk that proverbial kool-aid. She really occupies into that weird non-class that all the religions of the Old World do, which means as a lesser member she takes crap from everybody. Still, everybody respects a Shallyan.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
If you mean "before somebody shoved a sack of letters at her and said they'd see her in a year", Marina mostly cleaned surgical instruments, because the Shallyans actually understand that sterility is a Good Thing. Sometimes, she even handed surgical instruments to somebody who asked for them. It's all very exciting.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?
Look, I don't know where you keep getting this "adventurer" idea. Marina just wants to help people, and also deliver letters because APPARENTLY that's what you have to do in the Order of the Dove.

6. How religious are you?
Incredibly. Marina regularly witnesses miracles of divine healing and has seen the senior sisters incinerate unnatural beings of plague and suffering on several occasions.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?
Marina likes almost everyone, and is hurt by any intimation that she wouldn't. That's okay! She'll pray for you.

8. What are your prized possessions?
At the moment, just her silver Shallya pendant and the letters she's carrying for the Order.

9. Who are you loyal to?
The Church of Shallya, mostly, but like every girl in Altdorf she gets dreamy eyed every time Karl Franz does a parade.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?
Everybody equally, and possibly Nurgle worshipers, respectively.

Good justification with lots of interesting RP potential. Permission granted.

I SCORED 85% ON A QUIZ ABOUT MONDAY NIGHT RAW AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY TEXT

#bastionboogerbrigade

Orlenda

1. Where are you from?
Bechafen. What? Many Kislevites live there, just across the river from the motherland. The river is a trade route to Zavstra and Kislev and we're sitting on the Empire end of it. Of course, I can hardly call it home anymore. My training took place in Kislev, out in the Oblast, the wilderness. It's the home I'm bonded to protect now.

2. What is your family like?
Chzov is an important name in Kislev. The head of our house is a noble, too. My father is a second cousin to him, I think. Chzov is a big name in the trade on the Urskoy and the Talabec. I could probably find one in each town along them between Kislev and Talabheim. Even though the Sisterhood is also my family now, we never forget where we came from.

3. What social class do you belong to?
In Kislev, I am a member of the Sisterhood and therefore respected. As a Chzov, I am also part of a wealthy, wide-spread family with some influence, although not nearly as much as the Sisterhood. I mean, the Tzarina is one of us - you can't get much more influential than that.
Here in the Empire, I am just a wanderer, a foreigner and a user of a wind of magic even the initiated here don't know much about, if at all. Where I could walk in Kislev with my head held high, I know enough to keep it down here.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
I endured the harsh training of my mistress Kazimira Matryonadoch and, of course, the land itself. I will not go into details for they are secrets of our Sisterhood. It took a long time, nearly killed me a couple of times, and changed me, but I endured.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?
I was sent to the Empire to scout the state of its leylines, the spread of Ice Magic, and as an envoy to the local colleges of magic. It probably was meant as preparation for this War the Sisterhood feared was coming, but it broke out not too long after I arrived. Now I am caught up in all of this and trying to find a way to help, to use my talents to drive back the forces of Chaos.

6. How religious are you?
I know men like to call on the Gods, revere them and fear them. Religion has it's role for them, but it's not for me. I am bonded to the Ancient Widow, the Oblast, and Ice Magic. Our sisterhood's purpose is to protect the Ice Magic, and by extension the land, from Chaos. For most of us, that means Kislev, but right here, right now, it also means the Empire. Religion and the churches are allies in our struggle against the forces of Chaos, just as the realms of man are.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?
My little brother Gaspar is still dear to me, but of course now I am a sister of the Ice Witches and they are my sisters and friends now. Enemies? I have not been released from my training long enough to make personal enemies yet, but all allies of Chaos are my sworn enemies.

8. What are your prized possessions?
This flask, silver and decorated with my family's crest is a memento I hold dearly, a present of my dear Gasparasha. And the kvas inside it, the last reserve of the most Kislevian drink there is!

9. Who are you loyal to?
The Sisterhood I am sworn to. The Land it's sworn to protect. The Ancient Widow that called us.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?
It does not befit an Ice Witch to think in these categories. Although I still think Mistress Kazimira did not always have successful training in mind with some of the things the challenged me with.

Well, fuck. Really?

Athielle

She really wasn't in this for the money; it was all a distraction, to help her forget Maledor, to forget her namesake. She wasn't always known as Athielle, but after that battle, after slinking away to the colonies? She wanted to be someone else for awhile. And maybe a great name would lead her to great things.

So far, it only lead her to save a strange little creature who talked a lot and loved food. Bernadette was certainly endearing enough, and her training as an archer and a rider certainly brought in money to keep the two of them afloat.

But really, it was an all an excuse to do some good for the world. Athielle had seen enough evil, and travelling through the Empire under the guise of an entertainer typically brought them to towns that needed more than a good show. She keeps her past to herself and has tried to move on from it rather than let it define her; while it has driven her to perform the deeds she does now, she does not want a mysterious past to be all there is to her and something that consumes her.

1. Where are you from?
Ellyrion. It's a beautiful land of rolling hills and open grasslands, and I wish my horse had been reared there.

2. What is your family like?
They were horse breeders, and we roamed the hills of Ulthuan, but now they are long dead.

3. What social class do you belong to?
I suppose I would be one of the common folk, even in Ulthuan.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
I was an outrider for the Reavers of Ellyrion. I scouted, I foraged, and I killed for my prince.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?
Ennui. There was nothing left for me in Ulthuan. My life as I knew it had ended; I could wallow in my self-pity (and I did, for a time) or I could make my mark on the world and better myself and maybe, some day, do something for my home.

6. How religious are you?
I pray to the Cadai, as all good elves do, and particularly to Kurnous and Isha, but I also give thanks to the Crone, Morai-heg; I survived only by sheer luck before I fled Ulthuan, and I imagine she has plans for me.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?
Bernadette is the only true friend I have encountered so far. I've made my share of allies and foes in my long life but none have stuck around like Bernadette has. I would feel the Khainite bitch who killed my father and my mother to be my worst enemy, but I do not know her name.

8. What are your prized possessions?
My longbow and my horse. And I have an ithilmar locket with a picture of my parents.

9. Who are you loyal to?
Ulthuan. I do not know who now reigns over Ellyion, if anyone, but that prince or princess is deserving of my loyalty if they continue the fight.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?
I have a special affection for Bernadette; she is the only link I have to this strange land and is a very interesting and confounding being. As long as I live I may never fully understand her.

Above all else, I hate the Druchii, the cultists of the Cytharai, and all who would side with them. The Naggarothi and their Witch King, all of them could be purged in the flames of Asuyron and I would simply smile.

Secure. Contain. Protect.
Fallen Rib

Bernadette "Bernie" Cheapseats

"Athielle the Astonishing is coming to your town, yes, that's right, to this very outpost of civilization! For a token fee, she will rid your town of mutants, orks, beastmen, or chaos cultists. Undead extra. She also does trick riding. Do I hear any offers?"

It wasn't Bernie's fault. Of course, it never was. Sure, she might've been a little... optimistic when she'd told the innkeeper she was good for another round, but how was she to know the inn was full of skinflints? Clearly, he needed to attract richer clientele. Anyway, it was incredibly rude of him to throw her out the door. And what he had been about to do with his cudgel was even crueler.

Bernie had braced for the blow, but instead of a thud there was a twang, and suddenly an arrow was vibrating in the head of the cudgel. She and the innkeeper stared at it for a moment before Athielle strode up and told the human to pick on someone his own size. In that moment, Bernie recognized three things. One, the elf had just saved her life. Two, the elf was a damned good shot. Three, the elf's purse was quite full. Clearly, Bernie had just found a new meal ticket. Er, partner.

After an ingratiating introduction, Bernie offered to serve the elf as her personal herald and promoter. After all, you couldn't just go wandering around willy nilly looking for adventure. You had to get your name out there! You had to market yourself. You had to set competitive prices with appropriate bonuses for mutants, beastmen, and Unanticipated Peril. Now the pair adventure together, seeking out glory and free drinks.

1. Where are you from?

From Halstedt, a small town in Stirland. I didn't much like Stirland, and Stirland didn't much like me or my kind. The Baron had it in for us. Man couldn't take a joke. I happened to tell a tale at an inn about him and his horse that... Well, sadly word got back to him, and it seemed like a good time to expand my horizons.

2. What is your family like?

My mother's an apple farmer. My father's a maker of apple cider. They're both well-to-do among the local halflings.

My older sister's gone off to be a Field Warden, my brother's gone to the Moot to find his living, and my youngest sister is probably going to inherit the farm.

3. What social class do you belong to?

Solidly middle of the pack. Not so rich that we put on airs, but we always had enough to eat, and have guests besides.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?

Same thing I do now, really. Told stories. Jokes. Made people laugh. Now I just do it to get jobs for Athielle, instead of just depending on the take from the crowd.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?

So, the Baron was drinking one night, and he wandered into the stables... Oh, have you heard this one?

6. How religious are you?

I don't think about it too much. I mean, don't get me wrong, I honor the gods when I have a mind to, and I curse 'em when things are going poorly, but it's not really much to do with me, is it?

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?

My best friend in the world right now is Athielle. That she is also my sole source of income and provenance is beside the point. She might look tough, but she'd be right lost without me. Why, once I thought for a second she was going to work for free! Boggles the mind how she survived before me.

My worse enemy is his honor Baron Erich von Halstedt, may he die of the horse clap.

8. What are your prized possessions?

I'm pretty fond of my hat. It's got a feather from a genuine hippogriff. It's true, the salesman swore on his mother's heart!

9. Who are you loyal to?

Athielle, of course. Even if we weren't partners, she's a friend, and I'd never betray a mate.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?

I love my family. My parents were always there for me, even when I said I didn't want to grow apples. I'd do anything for my sisters and brother, and I know they'd do the same for me.

I don't really hate anyone. His honor the baron's a prat, but I can't bring myself to respect him enough for hate. Scorn, sure, but hate? Too much effort.

Wolfgang Erhardt

1. Where are you from?

Well, that's a tricky question. My family have been travellers since before I was born, so I can't point to some town or village and say that's where I came from. All I remember my mother telling me is that it was somewhere in the Forest of Shadows. I'm a Nordlander and an Empire man through and through, and that's what matters.

2. What is your family like?

We were all hunters. My father taught me to string a bow and shoot straight, and my mother taught me how clean a deer's carcass so the meat won't go bad before you can get it back to whoever's willing to pay for venison, and how stay unnoticed by man and beast. I did most of the teaching for my brothers and sisters, though, once they were old enough to learn.

Wherever you go there's always demand for pelts and meat, so we went wherever the game was plentiful. We'd stay in one place until game got harder to find, then we'd move. We stuck to Nordland's forests, except the Laurelorn of course, and wherever the locals liked to hunt.

3. What social class do you belong to?

Hunting isn't a particularly reputable job. We don't have land or houses, so we're even poorer than most peasants. We don't owe service to anyone else, though, so at least we've got independence.

4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?

I used to make my living hunting, like the rest of my family. Beastmen attacks had been on the rise, though, and there'd been rumours going around dark things in the North. So when Count Gausser's recruiters passed through the town we were trading with, recruiting skilled archers and woodsmen for the Imperial armies, I signed on. I spent a few years there, scouting the woods, tracking beastmen and reporting on their movements for the Count's armies. Picking them off too, when we had the opportunity.

When the hordes came down from the North, my work stayed pretty much the same. It was even easier in a way, since a horde of heavily armoured northmen is about as ponderous as a cannon and twice as loud. At least the beastmen knew how to hide.

5. Why did you become an adventurer?

Middenland took the brunt of it, but Nordland was hit hard by the Northmen too. Nordland's never been rich, even before the war, so Count Gausser didn't have much money left to pay us with, and there was less need for a large army once the war was over. So I saw the way the wind was blowing, collected my back pay, and left the army.

Since then, I've been looking for my family. I checked around our old hiding spots but they were nowhere to be found, and Nordland's forests aren't safe for hunting any more - not that they were ever safe, but it's worse now. The beastmen are more organised than they used to be, and the woods are full of deserters, cultists, and stragglers from the Northmen's armies. Either my family are dead, or they moved to safer hunting grounds, which probably means going south of Middenheim.

So far there's no sign of them, but it turns out that a lot of towns and villages are willing to pay handsomely for the sort of work I was doing in the Count's army - patrolling the woods, giving them warning about anything lurking nearby, and helping to kill it if we think we can.

6. How religious are you?

Taal and Rhya are the gods of beasts and the wilds, and it's only right to give them thanks for letting us take their children. Ulric and Ursun, for when you've killed a wolf or a bear. Apart from them, Sigmar's the god of the Empire, and he helps the Emperor preserve us all from Chaos, so I always include him in my prayers - especially once the war started. Shallya too, if someone's hurt or sick. I'm sure the rest have their place, but they don't have much to do with me.

7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?

I didn't make many friends in the regiment, since I was out in the field so often. I was friends with one of the scouts I worked with, though, named Dietrich Schiller. He wasn't from Nordland - he was a Hochlander, and carried one of their long rifles. It was useless if you needed to kill something quietly, and once he fired it we always had to run like hell, but nearly every shot he made was a kill. We were paired up almost from the moment I enlisted, and I'd trust him like I'd trust my brother.

I never made personal enemies, though. With the northern hordes and the beastment trying to burn down the Empire, there was never time for that - we all had to stand together. I will say this, though - not all our information was good. Sometimes we missed things, or communicated poorly, or were just too slow in relaying what we saw. It was war, and we did our best, but we weren't perfect - people died who might have lived. Someone might hold a grudge over that.

8. What are your prized possessions?

My bow, my arrows, my cloak, and my knife. If I have those, I can make do.

9. Who are you loyal to?

I'm loyal to the Empire, I suppose. The gods, of course. My family too, if they're still alive and I ever find them again.

10. Who do you love? Who do you hate?

I love my father, my mother, and all my brothers and sisters. I've not really been in the right line of work for starting a family of my own, I suppose.

As for what I hate... even when you were as far from civilisation as I was growing up, I learnt early that witch hunters were something to fear. I knew that they tore children from their mothers' arms, and burned men and women alive. But when the invasion came, I saw what they'd been fighting against. Hideous creatures that might have been men once, places where the earth had been torn apart by spikes of stone and metal growing from beneath it, sorcerers who could summon swarms of flesh-eating maggots with a gesture... nothing like that should be allowed to exist. Nobody who wants that should be allowed to live.

In addition to the holidays, I spilled some grapefruit LaCroix on my laptop and need to have the keyboard assembly repaired. Also, last night, I stepped on my glasses and broke them clean down the middle (I have a backup at home, but I'm out of town).

Long story short, I hope to post this week, but I totally understand if people want to slow down their posting or need to take time to catch up.
