Getting back to her feet, Clarice squints off in the distance, but unable to where Ms. Wagner was firing from, turns an ear towards Jean and nods. As if in answer to Jean's question, a wide spray of paintballs burst out from the far end of the Danger Room, as Ms. Wagner dove in a graceful arc from one point of cover to another. They weren't aimed too well, but there was a lot of them. Ms. Wagner did not seem to be taking this too seriously at present, and maybe that was entirely the point. As Pyotr spun up his minigun and opened fire in her direction, she scrambled up one of the vine-cables and then sort of... melded in with the ceiling somehow. The yellow glint of her eye was still visible for a moment as she laughed, and then she was gone again.

That left only one option. Wagner was clearly not going to give them time to track her down. So she needed to be creative instead.

Rene fired shots off towards the ceiling. Spacing her shots. Watching carefully to see if Wagner would be forced to move. Then rapidly switching the aim down to the forest. Firing single shots at the heavy cover. Hoping to force her to move, and thus be able to track her. Wagner clearly liked attacking from cover. But careful methodical fire should at least put her under some pressure.

As Ms. Wagner fills the air with paintballs, Jane calls out to her partner, "Get down and stay low!"

Putting action to words, she quickly rolls out of the way of the paint headed her way. This all was starting to bring flashes back of... something. Something from before all this, maybe, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Another thing to put on the 'ask the Professor' pile, she supposed. After a moment watching carefully for a follow-up volley, she tries to take stock of the situation. What she sees...? Not so great. "She's-" Lee tries to call from her perch, before the tell-tale 'pft's of Ms. Wagner's initial barrage alert her to danger. Letting go of the rope, Lee inverts herself, dangling by her tangled leg to dodge the attack. Using the momentum of her flip, she swings to a new rope, grabbing it with both hands before spinning her leg free of the last. Looking around from her new perch, after confirming her pistol is still on her, she tries to spot Blink or Jean; it makes sense to regroup, avoid getting scattered for Wagner to pick off. Between the fog and the shadows and the projections, though, Lee's still having a hard time just reestablishing where she is when the second barrage comes.

Avoiding 2nd Attack (Solo, Mall Goth, Acrobatics, Proper Attire d6): 1, 7, 1, 6 = 13 w/ d4, aka just enough

Fortunately, none of this attack is aimed at her personally, and just staying still proves effective enough of a defense; either Wagner had missed her new hiding place, or she was more interested in the ground team.

Blink's protestations confirm at least part of Lee's thoughts. Poor Blink. Nothing sucks like being first out. Breathing slowly, Lee surveys the ceiling. Wagner seemed to favor it as a hiding place. Maybe it's time someone joined her. Keeping her eyes up, Lee begins her ascent.

"Dodging is not bad, aim needs some work," called out Ms. Wagner, surprisingly not out of breath despite the way she was practically ricocheting from one side of the Danger Room to the other like a pinball. Evidently, twenty years of practice doing things with one eye had really improved her co-ordination from the clumsy teenager they'd seen in Xavier's memories. "Bonus points for not cheating! It takes all of five minutes before Guerra starts nudging the trees around. Mind you, that's because we play outdoors."

"I never cheat," came Mr. Valentine's voice through the intercom, temporarily quieting the rainforest sounds on loop.

"You never win either," teased Ms. Wagner. "What's with the interruption? Jealous that they're doing much better than you? Kia almost got me a second ago, and Pyotr can actually aim that ridiculous contraption you built."

"Ha ha. As a matter of fact, there's something you have to see... and that includes you, TJ. Or you can keep playing around," said Mr. Valentine. "Your choice. But it's definitely something."

If there's something to be said for Jane, it's that she's quite doggedly determined when push comes to shove. No interruption is going to cramp her from taking Ms. Wagner's crown. As Ms. Wagner trades quips with Mr. Valentine, Jane creeps into a good firing position as her senses, superhuman as they are, begin to triangulate Ms. Wagner's movements throughout the room with the help of all that additional sensory data. Maybe it is a touch against the spirit of things, but nobody had ever accused her of playing by the rules... and they'd already put in sense-based countermeasures. If this works, that's really more on Mr. Valentine, anyway. Jane is extremely good at justifying her own behaviors.

She silently points out to Kia where she thinks Ms. Wagner is and gestures for her to unload on the teacher if she escapes the initial burst. Jane lets out a slow breath, crouching for better accuracy, then unleashes short bursts of paintballs at the ceiling. It's more an exploratory feint, the real barrage starting the moment she sees movement.

Moving silently along with Jane, Kia gets herself into position as well. If there's one thing Kia is good at, it's staying unseen. Learning how to stay out of sight, and moving without making a sound, were almost vital skills for her to learn while she was living on the streets. Those weren't the only skills she's learned, however. The streets were harsh, especially for a child, and Kia, before she discovered her powers, had to learn how to defend herself, and she never thought she'd be using those skills to win a paintball match against her own teacher.

She nods at Jane, and raises up her rifle once again. If Jane misses with her paint barrage, then Kia will get her with a well-placed rifle shot. Hopefully. She almost had Ms. Wagner last time, and this time, Kia doesn't plan on missing!

In the observation room, Mr. Valentine tapped the keyboard with some small measure of glee, and the video began playing, both on the monitor behind him and on the big projection in the Danger Room. It was the usual blue-and-red studio with a scrolling ticker along the bottom of the screen, the way all news channels seemed to look these days. The anchor was a doughy white guy, which again didn't really narrow things down. Only the omnipresent logo showed which network it was.

"Startling scenes coming from New York City today as the city, the country, still reels from an unprecedented attack on American soil, on a scale not seen since Pearl Harbour," the host said, with all the authority and bluster of a man who'd been given the wrong sandwich at a Subway. "Confusing reports emerging after the statewide blackout have muddied matters, but the White House has confirmed that the National Guard and the MRD are on the scene."

As he spoke, footage of Times Square played behind him in the upper corner of the screen, showing the devastation that only hours ago, the X-Men had been experiencing firsthand. It faded away as he swivelled in his chair to face the other side of the studio, which was apparently some sort of CGI wall. "Joining me tonight, live from Westchester, New York, is philanthropist, scientist, teacher, and author... long-time advocate of pacifism... of international charities the Valentine Foundation and the Xavier Initiative... Charles Xavier."

The introduction seemed a little long-winded for network television, but there was Xavier up on the CGI wall of the studio and smiling warmly. He seemed to be in his office, via webcam linkup. "Thank you, Sean."

"Now as a resident of New York state, you were within the affected area, correct?"

"Not only that, Sean, but I am acquainted with the selfless heroes who risked life and limb to protect the innocent people caught up in this terrorist attack."

This caught the host by surprise, and for a moment he faltered. "You mean the MRD?"

"No, I mean the young mutants who used their abilities today to save the country from certain disaster," said the Professor calmly. "I have it on good authority they call themselves the X-Men, and they are here to help."

The host blinked, mouth open and moving, but nothing coming out. Eventually he rallied enough of his bluster to continue. "But this attack was perpetrated by mutants in the first place!"

"You can't blame all of mutantkind for the actions of a few," chided Xavier. "These attackers were lone wolves, operating under a flawed ideology from a dangerous extremist. You don't have to be a mutant to do that. Why, there are many mutants in this very country who live peaceful lives, without using their gifts to harm anyone."

"Name one," retorted the host immediately and confidently, with an accusing finger jabbed in the Professor's direction. Xavier steepled his fingers and smiled.

"Me, for a start."

The video paused and then, over the intercom, Mr. Valentine's raucous laughter filled the Danger Room. The picture had frozen in a very unflattering way on the already-unflattering face of the host, his eyes bulging and panicked.

"Without revealing this fact to the public," the host was quick to point out. "People have a right to know!"

"Do they? That sounds like a violation of privacy to me. Where does it stop? We are people, just like anyone else. There are so many things that mutants are able to do, incredible things that could transform the world into a better place."

Jane cracks her neck back and forth, seemingly back to full vim and vigor, but she tips her head at Jean, "I think you've got the right idea. Things aren't going to be slowing down any time soon." Turning her head towards Rene — wow, she'd gotten real close all of a sudden — she adds, "Well, uh, things seem to have wound down, so... let's get going. Hell, I wouldn't say no to a stop by the cafeteria if you're not in a hurry."

“Food sounds like a great idea,” says Kia, as she walks up to Jane and Rene, “I don’t know about you two, but I’m starving after that little work-out we just had. But I gotta say; we three?” She drapes her arms around their shoulders, with mouth curling up into a wide grin, “We make a great team, yea?”

"Not selling us out, huh..." Clarice responded to Mr. Valentine's comment. She didn't sound really convinced.

No matter, seemed everyone else was totally ok with being exposed. Well, almost everyone. She noted a bit of a grousing on Lee's part from the observation room.

BLUNK!

"Hi." She said, a bit subdued for her usual exuberance, to the other girl as she stepped out of her portal next to her. "This whole thing is a little...sudden, huh? I mean, for me, anyway." She paused, chewing on her bottom lip. "I was thinking...I was gonna take a little breather outside the mansion for a minute. Kind of...figure out how I fit into all of this. I uh, wouldn't mind a little company though, more fun with two people, you know?" She raises her hands in a submissive posture. "I promise I won't be overly chipper."

Pete was missing bits of it here and there. TV was still pretty quick for him to follow. He's getting the gist of it, especially from the reactions of those around him. He looked over at Jean before givin' a shrug. "I have feeling that Professor is different man now that we have pulled out that thought," he muttered.

He kept watching and turned to look down at Clarice as she appeared. There was a little moment of concentration on his face before he nods his head. He wanted to cheer the Professor on; putting everything out there meant at least one side was willing to budge forwards. He pulled his phone out and checked twitter to see what the current leading trends were. He'd had to turn off notifications because that picture from earlier today was still rolling hard. He felt tired but- well, it was as different kind of tired. He knew that, somehow, he could keep going for days.

"Sure," he said. He had complete confidence in the Professor. For six months. He had complete confidence in the man for six months. He started to walk to the front of the building.

"Fine," Lee grumbles in reply to Clarice's request. "Anything to get away from this stunt." Throwing her jacket over her shoulders, she falls in behind the other girl, hands in pockets, hood pulled up.

Pete began to walk with Lee as she slid the hood up onto her head and stuffed her hands into her pockets. He waited until out of earshot before nudging her in the shoulder with an elbow. "We all need to have nice, open and honest conversation I think."

Clarice wasn't planning on a trio, but, well, when in Rome...

As Lee and Pyotr started walking, Clarice caught up. "Open and honest conversation, huh? That'd be a nice change of pace. But not here - no offense but I need some sun."

BLUNK!

A giant, glowing pink and purple rift opened up in front of the three of them. "I know it'll ruin your anti-tan, Lee, but after spending the afternoon inside somebody's brain, it's probably for the best, yeah?" She doesn't wait for an answer before stepping through, herself - but the Portal remains open, at least long enough for the other two to follow if they want.

Assuming they do, they all find themselves on a warm, and more importantly, deserted, tropical beach. White sand under their feet and the soft crash of waves lazily hitting the shore. Clarice spreads her arms wide and smiles. "This is more like it, no?"

Pyotr paused for a beat before he kept on walking until he was out of earshot of the rest of the team. Once he knew he was a good range away, he turned to Lee and leant forwards. He had to crouch a little to get to eye-level with her. "Okay," he said, with a nod.

Then there was a portal out into a beach somewhere else in the world. White sands, the sound of waves crashing and breaking. Nothing else. The sun was high overhead but it was low back in the mansion. This place was probably out in the Atlantic; Bermuda or one of the Azores. He grinned broadly and stepped through the portal before laughing to himself, looking to the left and then to the right.

"That is very useful trick." He paused. "We are not in Black Sea are we? I am- not so much allowed in Russia."
