Pet me.
I will say this. The best I can say about Visual Novels was, I played VA-11-Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartending Action, and Pyre (it counts), and that's it.

Looking at it from an outsider's perspective, and please correct if i'm wrong, usually the protagonist of a Visual Novel is built solely looking to smash any girl in the lineup, almost getting the player to focus on pleasing said girl, turning it into a binary choice of who you want to gently caress.

Gotta say though, through all this cheery music, I'm seeing the obvious flaws in these girls, I know there is something seriously wrong and they're really hurting in some form or another.

Looking back at all this right now, I'm really glad I didn't join any loving club in high school. Just keep all those emotions bottled up to yourself. No I'm not drinking

Welcome to the eroge market!

This perception has not been lost on visual novel writers and the field as a whole, and I can tell you that many many works have specifically addressed this problem in some way or another.

I wonder if a route's focus on wooing a particular girl makes the player character blind to said girl's problems as expressed in their poems. The MC was blindsided by Sayori's poem while he couldn't make sense of Yuri's, at least in my game so far.

Guess I'm going to be the spoilsport and say this is really loving boring! Glitchy madness and rampant fourth-wall breaking isn't really worth sitting through unending goddamn streams of cliche VN nonsense, particularly when its pretty easy to guess Monika's game as soon as she talks about saving and loading. Cut like half of Act 1 and maybe it would be tolerable but I just found the whole thing deeply uninteresting, even after Sayori killed herself.

I mean, I kinda get what you're getting at? The game seems to be a very slow burn, and it seems to rely on the explicit "poo poo's gonna get weird ok" of the disclaimer at the start to hook you through the initial poetry part. That said, I'm still really early in the game, so maybe it takes a couple hours to kick in. v:v:v Also important to note that I didn't actually read your spoiler sorry!

Oh gently caress off Sayori. I hate it when people mope about like this. You're hurting, we know, don't pretend like everything's okay. Just come out with it.

So I guess we're going with mundane and psychological. Not at all what I was hoping for, but sure, why not. I wonder if Sayori is always the focus of the game, or if this is because I didn't give her enough attention.

I've decided to try and balance the wording in my next playthrough, to see if I'm supposed to be balancing paying attention to each girl.

Hahahaha yessssssssss it looks like the game is calling you out for trying to gun for a particular girl. Awesome. Joke's on you game, I just have similar tastes to Yuri.

Well I really felt like one girl in particular fell in love with me. It went well beyond simply liking my poems.

Another EDIT just so I don't doublepost: My Virus Checker (AVAST) popped up twice when I first opened the game. I'm assuming thats because Monika addresses you by your actual name, which requires the game to access files that aren't its own stuff. Who else liked that bit? Listen, I've spent a lot of time with Yuri, but I think it's unfair and honestly kinda creepy to only ever hang out with her. Let's help Natsuki with the baking. Not to say I want to get away from Yuri! But I think the game would chide me for going with Yuri yet again.

Oh, I can't. Alright game, let's play this your way. Sorry Yuri, I think the game would push me into a bad end if I didn't at least spread the attention around a little. EDIT: Not Monika either, huh? Alright, Natsuki it is.

My thoughts on the conclusion of the story and about the VN generally follow so there's lots of spoilers!

I liked this VN. Obviously it's a story about depression, well, it's about neuroses. Though I suppose some of that is undermined by Monika claiming in the end to have altered the characters. Important to note that she claims to have amplified the unhealthy parts of who they were rather then fabricating those parts from nothing. See but as much as they're (the girls) all different takes on obsession and misery they do have one unifying characteristic they all ultimately see you as the solution to their problem. The problem with that is you're not, you couldn't be. Sayori hangs herself because not even getting what she wants can fill the void.

Monika says "You and I are the only real people here" or something along those lines. That's not true though because, though Monika is shown to be able to manipulate certain things she isn't really any different from the other characters. Absent the monika file Sayori takes on her role and is shown to at least some extent inherit monikas awareness. Monika then reacts by completely breaking the game, because having occupied that role and known that awareness she has become fully aware that it is an obscene burden to be aware that everything around you is fake and that even the obsession with you, the player, can't fill that void. Or maybe the realization she comes to is that you, the player, are not capable of actually giving a poo poo. You can't help but hurt her because you can't actually give her what she wants.

One thing they did that I liked was changing the art style on the eyes during particularly intense emotional outbursts on the part of the characters. It's a little hokey looking but I think it's a pretty clever psychological ploy to shift their eyes from that unreal anime style to a more realistic and actually human pair of eyes.

My response to this, again post-game spoilers:

I like this take on it. Neuroses, mental illnesses - when something's broken in your head, if you don't manage it carefully, it's going to get worse. Trying to "cure" yourself with another person won't work, because the problem is with yourself, in the end.

I played the Yuri route twice, and - well, the first time through it was a good depiction of anxiety and social awkwardness. You can get better at interacting with other people by interacting with other people, and if you get someone who's easy to talk to, that speeds up the process. But if you exacerbate the anxiety - like Monika did, where she made it extreme - it can devolve into obsession with the one "safe" person you interact with, paranoia regarding other people, and so on. I can relate with that - I mean, not to that crazy extent, but highschool me would get paranoid about my friends, thinking they were leaving - and so I'd cling harder to them. So to speak. I'm better now, but - yeah, it rings true.

In Monika's case, I'm... not sure how to feel about her. Her lack of regard for the others, even if they're just programs, showed a fundamental lack of empathy that made it really difficult to ever feel sad for her. But there it is: when she goes to dangerous extremes to try and get what she wants, it's all thrown out of whack. Obsession will destroy everything, even what you want. If she hadn't been so violent about trying to get a route for herself, and instead tried to shape the game so she could be a "true" route instead of a nightmare route - well. It wasn't to be.

"You can't act and dress like this and not expect me to think you're cute" ughhhhh no none of this poo poo please. I really regret naming the MC after myself. I was already miffed when the MC ended up being male but this is just bothersome.

Oh gently caress off. Caring for someone and their wellbeing doesn't mean that it must be romantic interest as well. I still don't know if the game is intentionally playing this up or what, but I hate that poo poo. Yes, I'm at that choice, how did you know?

"Please trust me that I know what's best and what will make you happy in the end" Gross dude.
