I opened this thread up last year in November so we're a month early, but I figure this will be a good spot for all wishing and praying. It has nothing to do with the Giants currently being 0-5 (stealth edit from the future: I've never seen a team end up 0-17 but that extra game in Mexico City sounded like a good idea at the time)

What is the NFL Draft?
All 32 NFL teams get together and select from a pool of draft eligible players. There are seven rounds of the draft with additional compensation picks or forfeiture of picks for a total of about 224 players drafted each year.

Where is the NFL Draft
It's tentative but I believe it will be held in Dallas this year.

When is the NFL Draft?
The NFL Draft occurs once a year, typically in the spring time after the NFL Combine. I say this because Commissioners love to move the date around, or in Goodell's case, break the draft up into three days in order to take advantage of prime time television. This year the draft is April 26th through April 28th.

How do I find out more about prospects in the NFL Draft?
I prefer to look at a bunch of different sources. You can either follow NFL pundits on twitter, subscribe to tape analysis youtubes, or just plain watch college football! I highly recommend the last one for people who are interested in the draft but only watch pro football. I personally think it's a lot of fun watching prospects go from big recruit to freshman to veteran on the team right back to a rookie in the NFL.

Can I get some NFL people to follow?
Sure!
Mike Mayock is a former safety with the Giants and has a decent head on his shoulders. Good at explaining what he looks for in a prospect and what he looks for in a drill.
Bob McGinn was a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and now runs his own pay to view website, https://www.bobmcginnfootball.com. All his information is with Packers needs in mind but his information is invaluable due to his direct contacts with anonymous NFL scouts. Will present multiple view points from these sources without editing or spin.
Josh Norris writes for NBC's Rotoworld website. No football experience but plugged into CFB throughout the year.

I don't trust those fancy draft pundits, they're always wrong. I wanna scout prospects myself! How do I scout?
There's no secret to scouting! You just have to put in time and effort and know what to look for. Luckily we're in a golden age of youtube game clips so you can pretty much pull up any prospect whenever you want and watch how he plays against a variety of offenses or defenses. Here's my general process:
1. Look at top stats leaders or top ranked guys on the cbs prospects ranking page. They usually sort them by stats/name recognition anyway so it gives you a good starting point.
2. Watch the player on youtube or draft breakdown.
3. Think of what you generally want to see in a player while watching this person play. For instance, you want linebackers that are big and fast who are also smart so they can diagnose where the ball is and get there to make the tackle. So watch a LB and see if he's bigger than everyone else around him, faster than everyone else around him, and can get to the ball before everyone else. If you think he's all of the above, some of the above, or none of the above after watching him for a few different game clips, then you have just successfully scouted a player!
4. Also try to keep an open mind about production. College football constantly fluctuates as teams lose players to the NFL, injury, transfers, or other reasons while taking on tons of new recruits each year. The prospect who looked good his sophomore year might have a variety of reasons why he looks worse or even better his junior year.

I don't want to do that, that sounds stupid and boring. You tell me who's the best prospects instead!
It's kind of too early to tell right now. At this moment we're in week 6 of the college football season and it appears that this draft is QB, RB, and OT heavy. At this moment it appears that there are 5 QBs who are all legitimate first round prospects in Josh Rosen, Mason Rudolph, Luke Falk, Lamar Jackson, and Sam Darnold. There's also an absurd amount of RBs who could go in the top 50 this year in Bryce Love, Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb, Bo Scarbrough, Myles Gaskin, Royce Freeman, Ronald Jones Jr., and Derrius Guice.

Come back to this OP two months from now and laugh as half those prospects either tore their ACL or have disappeared off the face of the first two days of the draft.

Let me tell you that Sam Darnold is better than his stats this season, but worse than his stats from last year.

Last year he had a great O-Line and great experienced recievers, this year, the O-Line has been riddled with injuries and the WRs are pretty mediocre. He is still throwing some bad passes, but there have been a ton of drops and ints that bounced off the WR's hands.

Draft him high, but don't expect him to be Ben Rothlisberger on day 1 or anything like he was hyped up during the off-season.

Also, draft Uchenna Nwosu if you need a OLB, he is insane and deserves way more hype than he currently has.

Edit: Since this basically a draft summary for USC, I 100% don't see the hype that has Imam Marshall as the #1 CB off the board. He is good, but significantly worse than Jack Jones (the current CB playing opposite to Marshall) or Adoree Jackson.

Notre Dame has two in McGlinchey and Quenton Nelson. Both are huge road graders but Nelson's definitely more sound and an appealing LG prospect that could go top 25.

Mitch Hyatt is probably the guy you're looking for. Crispy clean pass blocker that has some run game chops. Still growing too. Connor Williams was The Guy going into this year but he just tore his knee up so I dunno what'll happen to him now. Okorafor is more of a RT than a LT. Big dude that destroys people but can't really get there against pass rushers. Billy Price might be a LG at the next level. I can see him more as a pulling or sweeping guard than anything. Orlando Brown Jr. is like the biggest guy in college football and he looks pretty athletic too.

Yeah he's a freak of nature. 6'3 and looks like a WR playing safety. He also hits like an absolute truck and not in a cheap Calvin Pryor way. Jamal Adams was a better prospect in the run game because of his technique but I could give James the nod in coverage skills and ability to decimate a ball carrier.

So since it is going to be a major topic of discussion all year, how high should Saquon Barkley get drafted? He is absolutely amazing, but I know people don't like to invest super high picks in high mileage RBs anymore

$240 million of Johnny Walker Blue and Throatzilla's services.
Didn't Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffery have a ton of carries in college? Both ended up with over 600, and Barkley is currently sitting at 556. I think elite running back talents like Barkley get drafted top 10 regardless. Hell, even Zeke very nearly eclipsed 600 carries.

I always like to use Ray Rice as an example. He had 910 carries and was still a second rounder. I don't think NFL front offices care that much.

He's a top 25 selection right now.

The rumor is Jim Mora dislikes him, because Rosen thinks he's smarter than Mora. Rosen's probably right.

The Chargers have won a game already, and are likely to win at least a few more, so Ross is also dreaming if he thinks the Chargers will get Rosen (rather than the Browns, Giants or 49ers).

Kind of weak this year with Calvin Ridley and Deon Cain headlining the class right now. Ridley is benefiting from being 24 in the NCAA and is pretty much out-athleting everyone at the moment. Good games against decent defenses in FSU, TA&M, and Colorado State. Deon Cain is the premier deep threat guy this draft but he's been underperforming and has a ton of off the field issues with pot. Probably will drop.

Courtland Sutton might be a riser this year. He's a huge Mike Evans type that's deceptively fast. If he keeps producing he might go before Ridley and Cain. Christian Kirk is the short yardage specialist that runs chrisp routes and destroys people after the catch. Kind of small and is ugly af, plus might stay another year. Deontay Burnett is Darnold's receiver this year and might go in the first day, possibly. He's the tiniest guy in the Pac-12 but he's been destroying all year and is the only decent guy on that offense besides Darnold. Very intriguing prospect but I'm not joking, he's like 140 lbs.

Probably Magic posted:

Florida State has two guys in Derwin James and Tarvarus McFadden. James is their elite do it all safety that'll probably leave early this year and go in the top 5. McFadden is their 'lock down' CB because he's huge and destroys people in short yardage situations. He's extremely raw and has issues with playing the actual position of cornerback, but that'll fix itself as he develops. Minkah Fitzpatrick is another in a long line of tall Alabama CBs that are asked to exclusively keep a receiver behind them with over the top safety help. Great in run support and might actually switch to strong safety because of it. Quenton Meeks is Stanford's lock down guy. Tall guy, kinda skinny but really quick. One of the better technicians out of the lot but not a good tackler or man guy despite his length. Adonis Alexander is bigger than both McFadden and Fitzpatrick though and taller. He looks like a LB playing CB. Has absolutely no idea how to play the position either. Constant flag machine. Might be the most unique player in the NFL if he can somehow be trained to play beyond the LOS. Jaire Alexander is the last guy and probably the safest of the lot outside of Quenton Meeks. Shortest guy out of the top 5 but has decent size and plays with The Look. Seems to stick to receivers like glue and has superb ball skills. Also might be the fastest guy in the draft.

CBs are basically super deep so far but a lot of them seem like safety tweeners or outside only guys.
