How does that work?

As I understand it, the tl;dr of it is that it emulates a PPU, and renders its own version of the screen based on data sniffed from the CPU/PPU lines in the cart slot, which is then output via the RGB connector on the device itself. How well this approach works depends entirely on how accurate the emulated PPU is.

It's probably fairly common knowledge by this point, but the reason every NES RGB mod is so complicated is because the PPU itself outputs composite video. Your only options for generating true RGB are to harvest an RGB PPU from a PlayChoice-10 PCB or Famicom Titler (please don't do this), intercept and perform voodoo on signals at the PPU (the NESRGB method), or emulate the whole drat PPU.

drat, I guess I'm lucky I bought my 3DO ODE from MNEMO back in 2020. It was only $85 I think. Now his website lists it as $180 in bitcoin.

I can't imagine that would be great on the spindle motor. At least when it's upside down the weight is still balanced the same way.

So what's being done with the PS2 to accommodate reading a disc in a vertical orientation that the PS1 lacks?

The disc locks into place on the PS1 so that's handled.

Yeah, "I have an ODE and I want to save space" were the two big reasons for this coming into being.

Presumably they built the PS2 with “some people are gonna be using this thing sideways” in mind and used a laser assembly setup to suit that, whereas the PS1 wasn’t and is already known for having wonky laser issues that sometimes necessitate turning it upside down.

If the assembly in the PS1 isn’t braced enough for instance I could imagine having it sideways with the weight/force of a disc being spun up would make it sag over time, and potentially end up with the ‘lower’ edge of the disc clipping the bottom of the tray and ruining everything.

Is there really not a Wii thread? Anyways, I've been replaying Skyward Sword. I initially got frustrated with dowsing and dropped it years ago, so I've been using a walkthrough to alleviate that stupidity. I was really enjoying it, I finally got the motion controls down (it's a lot more subtle motions than my brain was thinking I'd be doing considering the Wii Motion Plus is required) but man the monotony of constantly visiting the same 3 location is just wearing on me. I'm at the start of the quest to get the hero's song and just seeing going back to the forest, desert and volcano but with slightly different circumstances yet again is almost making me want to just put down the game despite having come this far. At first I was shocked by the 10/10 reviews because I felt like the motion controls didn't really work and dowsing ruined it, but now I'm shocked by the 10/10 reviews because this game is extremely light on areas to explore and really repetitive. This has to be by far the smallest 3D Zelda game. I suppose Majora's Mask wasn't that much bigger but you also weren't repeatedly going back to the same places to advance the story (that I recall).

Tomato and other people are great resources about Japanese to English translations and localizations; are
there any English sources that talk about English to Japanese (or other languages) localizations? I see that a Japanese release of Secret of Evermore was planned but cancelled and I'm very curious how that would've looked in Japanese, among other games.

Looking over my collection today I’m considering getting box protectors for my snes / nes / n64 / gameboy / advance games. Will probably pick up some manual / cart bags to clean up the collection too.

Any one have any recommendations on best ones for price, or which ones to stay away from?

Vgbp.com looks legit but I have nothing to compare against. Reddit seems to like them, but it’s Reddit so.

Any thoughts or advise?

I've used https://www.retroprotection.com/ and have been happy with everything. They even have custom protectors for the odd sized boxes.

This seems to be sort of an odd market as there’a not really vast gulfs in quality for what’s out there and not much price difference either. I’ve been grabbing them off aliexpress but I’m really only saving on shipping costs.

Are desiccant packs to preserve against moisture necessary when using these plastic boxes? Or is that just going overboard.

Spent the past hour tearing down a PS3 Phat and doing the SYSCON error code reading. All signs point to RSX VCC issues, which actually for once means the NEC/TOKIN Caps.

They are BASTARDS to remove. I swear I've lost brain cells with the mix of lead and whatever chemicals venting out of them. (even with extraction fan)

It's too late to do the cap soldering tonight but fingers crossed tomorrow. If only I had this skill level/knowledge/tools when I was trying to fix my 60GB Launch model :(

I've posted Retroprotection here too. Their boxes are higher quality than ones I've bought through ebay. One time he was out of Gameboy boxes so I bought some random ones on ebay and they were noticably flimsier than the Retroprotection ones. I talked to the guy who runs the site and he's great at customer service. A few months ago, I checked to see if he had boxes for the Metroid Dread Collector's Edition and by the time I checked they were sold out. I shot him an email and he said he had a few left, sent me a paypal invoice and shipped a couple out. Also, if what you pay for shipping is higher than what he pays at the post office, he will refund you the difference, even if it's a few cents.

I love when you find a seller like that. Over 10 years ago I had an aussie seller that was in Japan that would fold me stuff for up to a month if I couldn't afford it at the time cos he knew I would pay eventually. I mean I would give him a list, and he would find then invoice me. Not buying ebay and not paying for months.

Desiccants won't get you a lot of benefits there. While moisture and humidity are you enemies, I don't think any of those seal well enough for that to make a difference. And I'm not sure they last long enough to make a difference; those packets are used in situations where moisture will have a significant chemical reaction that affects quality.

Rule of thumb for anyone not in a museum or archive storage: an air conditioned room is fine.

Nthing retroprotection as well. He has the right amount of room in the box protectors so it's not too tight a fit around your box. It's important when you want to take a game out of the box to play it. Silica packets are overkill unless you're keeping things in a water and fireproof safe. Those are the only things I can think of with a tight enough seal to create a micro moist and humid climate that will ruin things.

If someone is reading this...
I must have failed.
When I had to put my systems and games into storage, I used waterproof containers and tossed a silica packet into each one. Probably wasn't necessary, but it was good for peace of mind.

I'll also vote for Retroprotection. Even the Neo Geo AES protectors I got fit the boxes nicely, and those are some big and awkward boxes.
