It turns out that Famicom fighting game Joy Mech Fight had the largest roster of characters of any fighting game released up that point in 1993. In fact, no one would surpass the size of its roster until King of Fighters '98.

Cleaning out my parents house this weekend I found my old N64 (model NUS-001USA). No controllers.

Looking into getting it up and running.

So far from what I've researched I'd like to get:

Everdrive 64 X5
Brawler 64 wireless
One of those memory card things that doesn't need a battery (or do I not need this if I'm using an everdrive?)

For HDMI I see there are crazy expensive mods and that might be nice down the road but I have a Denon s910w that takes composite so I can probably just use that for upscaling right?

Am I missing anything else here?

You still need a memory card for the n64, the everdrive can copy saves from that memory card to the sd card but it has no save functionality itself.

Seriously? It's not the worst action-RPG of the time but I found it to be pretty awful. I'd recommend playing some of the Snowblind Studios games instead. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and the two Champions of Norath games are really good and don't freeze the game up for half an hour every time you go back to town while playing four player.

Yep. Just fired up OoT and the horse is galloping around. Video looks like poo poo but I have to mess around with the AVRs scaler settings.

My guess is that your receiver doesn't upscale or does it poorly. I would just buy this:

Thanks! I'm gonna start with the everdrive and see how the AVR does. I set it to 720p and it looks pretty good but I can test Lag atm.

I don't have anything against the wireless brawler, but I do have some suggestions for other wireless controller options to look into.

BlueRetro dongle: bring your own Bluetooth controller, manage over web interface, virtual memory paks. https://8bitmods.com/n64-blueretro-bt-controller-receiver-with-memory-pak-original-grey/

RetroRosetta: this is what I use, it's basically the same thing as above except you can use it for four players simultaneously without needing more dongles. (Note: currently it can only use one NSO controller at a time, but that issue is being worked on.) https://www.tindie.com/products/grechtech/retrorosetta-universal-blueretro/

Retrobit Tribute64: I also have one of these, it's RF instead of BT if you prefer that, and it has integrated rumble which I love. You do have to bring your own memory pak. https://retro-bit.com/tribute64-wireless/

If you do want or need a memory pak, there's the forever paks: https://4layertech.com/products/forever-pak-64

All cords are tied across fifth dimensional space into one single rats nest. You might think you've untangled it, but that cord will be drawn back into to be part of the whole.

Awake and unreal, off to nowhere
The craziest NES bundle showed up on Ebay last night. 24 mostly complete in box games all in better than average condition and a top loader NES for $1500. One game out of those 24 was Contra Force complete in box which is probably $500 on it's own. Some of the other big hitters, Bucky O'Hare, Mega Man 5 and Super Spy Hunter. Some rough math and the collection of stuff was worth $2500-$2800. I'm never going to pay $500 for a NES game even if I could afford it, but I could have bought that and kept the 3 games I wanted and would probably never own otherwise and sold the rest and broke even.

If only the US government didn't suck rear end and want to keep track of everything we buy/sell and force us to be an accountant or charge us for taxes on things we sold at a loss. I really hope they change the $600 threshold to something more reasonable. I'm already at my limit on Ebay with like $580 sold. And taxes and shipping costs get included, so really after fees/taxes/shipping I hit the threshold after netting like $400 in stuff.

I don't want to keep track of my losses and gains just because I collect video games as a hobby and occasionally sell stuff almost always for a loss.

Yeah, I loaded up mine a few months ago after not being used for maybe 15 years, and it worked fine. I have it backed up on my Everdrive SD card, so maybe I should open it up and replace the battery in it.

Definitely worth trying to use S-video, it's a huge upgrade over composite. That and if your console is the right age, you can do component out with a cheap RGB amp. I've been eyeballing one of the easier ones for a while, since I'm sending it to a RetroTink5x.

If you're gunning for HDMI, I do also recommend the RetroTINK2x, the N64 is one of the consoles the 2X line is best with, from my experience, since it's designed for 240p consoles in mind.

Ideally Jim Ryan trips on a rake and someone at Sony works something out with Daybreak to get both Norrath games on PS4/5 with netplay. Can't fuckin' believe the price Interplay wants for BGDA1/2 with local only.

But if wishes were fishes and everything.

If the system sold with a wireless controller packed in at launch, it's not retro.

Someone break that one.

Wouldnt this be like the original gameboy since the controls were built directly onto the pcb, hence no wires needed to control.

Is it busted as in it won't read discs or busted in that there's something wrong with it opening/closing cause if it's the latter that is theoretically pretty simple(if admittedly a bit time consuming) to fix

Out of curiosity, what is the the approach for the latter? My OG Xbox jams the tray maybe 50% of the times it tries to open.
It was doing this when I got it (used), and is still doing after I replaced the drive with a compatible new Samsung drive.
It reads discs fine, but somehow jams itself when trying to open. I can "help" it by nudging the front cover up/down when it tries to open, but a more permanent fix would be nice. When I open the Xbox I cannot see any obvious part that needs tightening/fixing.
