Was going through some old photos, found some digital photos from y2k when I went to japan. Super low res because my camera had an 8mb card so i had it set to 640x480 I guess :( I had them in a folder for Roppongi but i doubt they were there.

Can anyone identify anything interesting in the bin of carts? Also the last photo I think was tokyo bus driver? it was basically a sim of driving a bus in Tokyo, stops and all. Seemed insane to me at the time.

Newest firmware is fantastic, not least because you can finally hold the remote buttons down instead of :f5h:ing forever.

This is on top of what came out in December, which was basically a total rebuild, you should be able to find plenty about it. One thing this one did since then, though, was hide the high-resolution outputs unless you turn on "experimental resolutions" from the OSD manual, so make sure you do that early.

There's also several where I can identify the publisher but not the specific game due to the camera glare.

Also, the cart with the top label in the right hand bin is Dragon Spirit; I wasn't sure if it could have been Dragon Buster II, but DBII has differently shaped characters on the label.

Oh hey, right below that is Paris-Dakar Rally! It's the only Famicom cart that peculiar shade of green.

The yellow cart with the partially exposed label is bothering me. It looks like it could be B-Wings but I think the logo is placed too high.

To the left of 10 is either Moero!! Pro Tennis (Racket Attack) or Moero!! Junior Basket (Hoops).

That's how it is for a lot of the rest of them. The cart shape, color, style of label, and the fact that this is obviously the clearance bin can help me narrow it down to a few possibilities but I can't be sure. Like the cart below 29 is Nobunaga's Ambition, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or Genghis Khan but I can't be sure since it's face down.

It's almost as if I'm six hundred games into a Famicom documentation project. :v:

There's a weird lack of Bandai in those bins. Except the Family Trainer carts...

As someone who just put mine together a week and change ago, this isn't really the case, you just have to be willing to assemble it yourself and if you've got any sort of experience putting together a PC (or even if you don't have this experience, honestly!) it's not really difficult at all. The only caveat is that you're gonna be ordering it piecemeal.

I ordered my de-10 nano directly from Terasic, bought a USB board from 7407chrisl on ebay, and the SDRAM and I/O board off of misteraddons. Unfortunately, the DE-10 Nano's price went up permanently from the original 130 dollar price point, but ordering it directly from Terasic at least avoids scalper prices (everywhere else I see the board for sale and in stock sells for over double!) and per my experience and others tend to ship individual orders of the board FAR sooner than their website's expected shipping date states. Only thing I don't have is a case, but I'm just going to get one printed.

edit to add: apparently if you're looking for just a full setup, misteraddons has preorder spots left for the stealth gold version of the case and per porkchop's twitter if it's still up for order on his website he'll be able to fulfill orders in the current wave of kits he's assembling

Digikey also stocks DE-10s still.

As for the I/O, etc., there are a ton (tens maybe) of different manufacturers of boutique and not-as-boutique options. I went with the MiSTress 500 from 8bits4ever, bought a RAM board from Mister Addons (though I think putting one together is reasonable too), then bought a cheapo Amiga 500 case & keyboard off of Ebay to complete the build.

It was still overall pricey, but cheaper than the Mister Addons kits & also the 3DO ODE that was posted earlier :v:

edit: I had the DE-10 from awhile back while waiting on 8Bits4ever to make/restock their stuff & wasn't aware it was base $200+ now. Still, I don't think it's too difficult to get a sub $400 build.

This has inspired me to write a short effort post about using Ikea Parts for your retro gaming cabinet needs.

Basics

A basic setup is an Ikea Kallax laying on its side. These used to be known as the Ikea Expedit. The Kallax is a bit thinner in the walls if I remember correctly

As you can see you get 8 'bays' for your consoles, and plenty of space on top for your TV plus consoles that won't fit down below (PS5 etc).

Wheels/legs

You can leave it flat on the floor or attach castors or legs to the bottom as desired.

When I put castors on mine I only attached wheels at each end of the cabinet and so it sagged in the middle. It depends on how much weight you are putting on it so if you are loading it up with stuff i'd add wheels/legs in the middle too.

More Shelves

An easy way to to double the number of consoles you can hold is to grab some of these Variera plate holders. You just screw them together and then place them on the shelf.

A Kallax Glass shelf insert provides a better looking result but requires more work on your part to install.

If you want some storage for controllers/games/cables then these kallax draw inserts will slot in:

A simple box that fits in is fine too:

Of course as your collection expands you can just buy more Kallaxes

All of this stuff I've written about is just what I have personal experience with. Here are other ideas that i've seen but haven't done myself:

I will burn my dread.

I appreciate all the worry about the PS5!! I’d forgotten to put the base back on it, so that plus evening out the spacing on everything has made put it much less precariously towards the edge.

Amazingly I tested everything and it all worked on the first shot. I also can’t wait for the DCDigital to come in stock again in 2050, because holy hell does it still look like rear end through composite even with the Retrotink 5x-pro doing some lifting.

e: Kallax talk

I use a few Kallax to store my board games and they work really well. I don’t love the look for retro consoles/entertainment centers, but it’s hard to deny that they’re so good for a modular solution.

Just checked and Digikey doesn't appear to have any in stock at this time, though that might change and would be worth watching out for just to dodge the cost of shipping the DE-10 from Terasic.

Even with the price increase, though, a MiSTer build that can run everything minus the Jaguar and output audio/video over HDMI is maybe a hair over 300 bucks since all that's really necessary is the DE-10, an SDRAM board, and an OTG USB hub. Everything beyond that is just a question of what other bells and whistles are desirable, like digital audio output or analog video output.

The movie Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers had an Easter egg in it that I found pretty clever. Minor spoilers not connected to the main plot follow:

In Dale’s “lair”, the arcade machine appears to be playing a bootleg version of the NES game, as opposed to it being a Playchoice 10 unit. In a movie whose plot revolves around “bootleg” things, this was nice.
