I wonder if it could dump battery saves to the SD, that + transparent plastic option would put me over the top. Is it silly to wish it had 4k output? Actually I guess 720p would work fine, it still divides evenly.

I wanted to love the Gamecube-style N64 sticks, but I found them to be intolerable for a large swath of games due to a combination of oversensitivy and having a terrible ramp up curve (in that you go from zero to 100% without needing to push the stick far). Games like Turok or Rogue Squadron were unplayable, and even a platformer like Banjo-Kazooie was twitchy as hell.

Having tried a few other options, the best method is in my view to get an original stick that has not worn its plastic components down too heavily and clean it/grease it with ceramic grease. It's very important to get a stick that is not too heavily damaged, as all the grease in the world won't help in that case. Even with a tighter spring it will be loose and feel like poo poo.

Alternatively, getting one of the OEM sticks from ebay (weirdly getting harder to find these) also works provided you also take them apart/grease them, because out of the box they are super tight and grindy.

Is there a particular grease to recommend? I've been meaning to clean my original set up for awhile now. They're still in pretty great shape, even the one I always used for like single player stuff. I just want to keep them tip-top because we do occasionally use them, even just for emulators because I've never liked any Xbox-style pad mapping.

Yes the GBA Everdrive firmware has a built in GB/C emulator. I believe it’s Goomba Color? But it runs fine. If there’s any deficiencies I haven’t noticed them past the inherit screen differences.

Hell I remember back in the day getting low impact SNES games running on gba, but that was with sound disabled and probably a lot of frame skip.

I plan to get purple and maybe gold if they get that far, was 5th place. Especially if they offer a round gate option.

Oh okay. That works I guess. Atomic Purple was one I wanted.

Unless something new has come out the AimTrak is the best option. I've wanted one for a few years but have never quite pulled the trigger because it's pricey for something I'd use, generously, once a month. PC & PS2 (Guncon 2) compatible. I don't believe Guncon 2's work with PS1 games in backwards compat either. So no native PS1, but it'd work via emulator.

Anyone have experience using RetroArch?

I got the program itself working, but it only sees my 8BitDo M30 as an Xbox Controller.

This makes setting input bindings a pain.

I keep reading online that if you load a game and then select "controls" from the quick menu, it's only supposed to ask you to assign buttons for the device you're currently emulating, but that hasn't been the case for me.

I fire up a Master System game and it still asks me for ABXY, LR, Triggers, etc.

Any advice?

By default all the 8bitdo controllers will start up in Xinput mode. So, your computer reads it as an Xbox pad. But after you bind it for a system I think Retroarch should remember that for next time? You could try and mess with DirectInput mode I guess.

Beat Aerial Assault on SMS today. It had a really awesome stage two background:

As you play, the sun keeps setting further and each time the colors change. Thought it was pretty impressive for a SMS shmup. Unfortunately I didn't care for the gameplay. The game gives you weapon powerups pretty frequently, the problem is not all of the weapons are good and the powerups actually seek your ship out so you have to dodge things you don't want. This also applies to bombs, if you've got the bomb powerup that basically destroys anything you have to dodge the lovely bomb drops. Also applies to speed ups... if you get more than one speedup you are going to run into poo poo and die. A lot of the games difficulty is wrapped up in spending a lot of time dodging the powerups you don't want and it just seemed kind of lovely.

Hey, I remember that game. I had the Game Gear version. I wonder if it's appreciably different from the SMS version. I remember it not being very good, but it was a shmup I could play in short bursts so it was in the regular rotation.

It helps that SMB2 was always an enjoyable game, and even if it didn't quite feel like a """Real""" Mario it was a weird(er), fun offshoot.

Zelda II's a different story. They purposefully intended to change things up. While having those Zelda expectations didn't help, it doesn't really work as its own thing either.

When it comes to Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, I can only play it with the hacked up 1964 emulator to add mouse and keyboard controls (and 60fps). It's just easier than unraveling two decades of muscle memory of Halo style controls. The mouse and keyboard injector works better than I thought it would. It's almost as good as a native PC game. Yes, it makes the game insanely easy but that just gives you many more opportunities to mess with the AI (crotch shot only run)
