ios devices have standard usb-c but there is no low-level access to the interface unless you have mfi - meaning you can't write a driver

if you don't have mfi your 2 options for using usb-c are for your device to act as a ethernet over usb adapter (generally good enough for most cases) or mass storage device.

you cannot make use of the simple ftdi chips for serial over usb which is really annoying and usually means you need a full blown linux in your device instead of a cheap microcontroller

all of the usb generic class devices (not just mass storage) i've tried worked though. you're not supposed to need drivers for those anyway

e: and that just reminded me that mass storage worked with the files app too, provided it was formatted with something ios supports (hfs, apfs, exfat, ntfs read-only) of course

yeah i should've mentionned in my post that this applies to devices you want to interact with in an app or otherwise.

ios supports and has drivers for a lot of generic devices like human interface devices, audio adapters, midi devices, etc.

on amazon there's lots of cheap ones from stupidly named ODMs and i have a couple of those, i'm sure you'll notice that they all have very similar designs too. if you're interested i can dig up the specific ones i have, but i haven't noticed a difference between them really and i'm pretty sure they're not all the same "brand" (but really, likely the same ODM). they all work and were less than $50

incidentally the only one i've found that doesn't work with my ipad is a dell one thats shaped like and is about the size of a hockey puck. real bad hub, on the poo poo it actually does work with it's only usb 2.0, so beware of that

it took way too long to install on my old apple tv 4 hd but it, too, seems to be more responsive. i'm frankly not sure how to feel because i'm going to grab a new one this week. the tweaks to the ui and menus are nice, too, and the work there probably helped the ui performance on this old model

yeah i didn't time it or anything but it took probably over an hour to install on the se3. it seems pretty good though, it's not too different from 16 except feeling quite a bit faster

put 17 on my ipad air 5th gen. update process was much much faster and it also seems snappier

not much different again of course, but i'm noticing pop-up spelling suggestions and safari's favorites bar has favicons now. i'm not sure if i like that lol, i got used to them not being there

so far a lot of the keyboard lag seems gone too? my snap take is that its a good os update

e: jeez this seems really fast. forums pages are snappy as poo poo

how are you installing 17 to your iPad? Are you just opting into betas? iOS 17 is the only one out right now right?

i had an option between public and developer betas and selected the developer beta for installation. i'm pretty sure that build (21A329) is the same one that'll get pushed eventually today. i mean, even if it's not, updating to whatever that is shouldn't be hard, you can opt-out of beta updates right after install

Got it, thanks. I'm still 2old2slow when it comes to the changes they've done in pushing updates.

literally every time there's an ios update they break orientation change somehow and i end up putting my phone in weird rear end situations like your screenshot.

it's insane how a company with that many resources can have things like this go to prod without anyone noticing

there's really not much new i've noticed so far and afaik ios 16 will still get some security updates. when there's a really major one it definitely will anyway, sometimes those go a few versions back even
