apple's solution already exists, it's built-in support for xbox and playstation controllers so they don't have to build hardware that's outside their wheelhouse:

i used a xbox controller to play through TUNIC on a m1 mac and it suited needs extremely well

they also certify/license/whatever stuff like steelseries, which work well

I connected a limited edition switch pro controller to macOS and the settings window showed the right colorway. good poo poo

switch joycons will show up as the right colours too, and it knows to use 2 as a single device. one of the many enraging things that macos has ridiculously good controller support (way nicer and easier than windows and linux) and nothing to use them with.

Yeah sorry I meant AR/VR specific controllers. I imagine the headset will do hand tracking but that’s not really going to work very well for e.g. VR Resident Evil. But…

…yeah maybe they will just support 3rd party controllers (and the Switch controllers is basically all you would need once you add in hand/arm tracking) plus MFI certified stuff.

i think they're going to try to focus on doing really good hand tracking and hopefully they won't make a dumb-assed decision like they did with apple tv apps (originally all games had to be playable on that remote lol)

i think with work you could do a hand-tracked res evil but it's going to be loving tiring and most will probably not do it well

Apple claimed to support VR headsets as far back as the iMac Pro days, what did they use to control that darth vader demo?

releasing the headset with no controllers and support for valve knuckles would be a power move

i'm waiting to see if they've developed actual magic and have a zero latency video throughput, or if they are planning to have people walking into walls and falling down stairs wearing their silly hat. or if they went the optical combiner route, which would at least be sane

i’m legit looking forward to seeing what they do. too rich for my blood unless this has all been a marketing ploy but no it’ll probably actually be $3k.

i don’t think the pocket battery is a big deal to keep weight and heat down, and i’m super curious if the rumours about it being about as thick as an iphone are true.

anyway best case scenario is that more people make more interesting software for my dumb cheap headset imo

generally the macbooks did get some love, with the return of a decent keyboard and ports and all.

hardly *exciting* news, but seeing how it looked like apple was pretty much killing them off it was a turnaround.

I'm asking this here and not in the wwdc thread because i really want an answer

what is the unique selling point of the headset. what can i do with it that i can't already do with a regular rear end screen and actual physical controls like a keyboard and mouse. why would i spend however much it is $3500 to do stuff i can already do, but worse

ar and vr stuff. i don't think there's a great software selection for it - like, no good vr games showed off but imo vr games can actually be really fun
