not really, here's another source if you dont want to click the video

https://venturebeat.com/2018/04/18/apple-refuses-to-fix-imac-pro-damaged-in-youtube-teardown/

quote:

Citing an obscure repair policy that might be illegal, Apple has refused to fix a brand new iMac Pro that was damaged during a video teardown — even at the user’s expense. According to Linus Sebastian of the 5.6-million-subscriber YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips, Apple said that it typically won’t fix a Mac that’s been opened by a user, a statement Apple and other tech companies were recently warned by the Federal Trade Commission not to make, as it’s illegal under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

and lol

quote:

“Imagine this in some other industry,” said Sebastian. “Imagine if you bought a brand new car and drove it into a lamppost as you were leaving the dealer. Then both the dealer and your third-party insurer said that they couldn’t fix it because the parts and the repair manual don’t exist… Despite Apple’s careful design, accidents do happen, and if a former repair technician can screw up from time to time — trust me, they do — the end user will, too.”

apparently this means you can't even change out standard stuff like the memory or ssd on the imac pro yourself even though there are slots for it

I’ve had this happen from time to time. like once a month or once every 3 months or whatever. No real culprit app wise but the battery drains down a lot faster than normal. you can usually spot it when use time is more or less the same as standby time. A reboot fixes it every time.

that's why every morning you should

- go into app store, make sure all the apps are updated for the day
- kill all background/frozen apps with the long hold on the X and swipe up motion
- go into settings/icloud/backup and run a backup
- wait till the backup is complete, turn off wifi manually in settings because control center is garbage
- swipe away settings
- shutdown the iphone x by holding the lock button and volume up and swipe to turn off

- fresh boot

never had any battery problems with any iphones with the fresh boot method every morning especially with the background app disabled completely

oh yeah those are a given

have your iphone x plugged in already and fully charged when you go through every step

unplug only after the last step of fresh reboot with passcode entered and everything, if you unplug before the phone is booted, the battery meter doesn't seem to calibrate properly and wont know how long you have been on battery power

also get a good 5 volt / 500 mA USB charger to make sure you dont end up fast charging your battery with high current for nothing

since you are most likely leaving it plugged in overnight anyway and ends with float charging, which might degrade the battery faster

had the dock delivered to work, played with it a bit and on a whim asked my office mate to plug his anroid phone into it via usb-c

everything worked as you would expect a pc to: keyboard (though anroid nicely asked for authorization to enable the physical keyboard), mouse cursor showed up on the screen, phone display was mirrored to displayport external monitor, ethernet device was detected and im sure would have worked fine if not for university network requring mac addresses to be authorized

i am now seriously considering buying a usb-c - lightning cable to try this with a iphone, just to see what happens -- im fine being out $5 or $10 if no external stuff works
recently updated ios on an iphone 7 via ethernet due to the sheer lazyiness of entering wifi password and just so happen the adapter and cable is nearby

it went from

ethernet cable -> apple usb-ethernet adapter-> usb/camera adapter to lightning-> iphone 7

internet immediately worked in airplane mode even though wifi is off, update worked just fine too

A Wheezy Steampunk posted:

does it damage your phone? i thought it just took four times as long to charge
The 'damage' of the li-ion battery is mostly the forming dendrites inside the battery and eventually short out the cathode and anode.
And the thing that will 'damage' the battery is mostly heat, where it will increase the rate it forms those dendrites.

Faster charging will also raise the temperature of the battery beyond a certain point, which in term is not good for the battery.

Wireless charging, especially at the general lower wattage that iphone support which is only 5W, is generally slower than the wired 10W (2A) charging or even the faster usb-c to lightning charging at 20W. So it's mostly safe if not better than most charging methods.

There are some concern where the slightly faster wireless charging at 10W will result in hotter charging temperature, but in general you dont really have to worry about that unless you go out of your way to specifically buy a wireless charger that supports 10W/fast wireless charging for the iphone.

Maybe that's why iphone still only include the small square 5W charger, to prolong their battery life cycle while still plenty fast to charge the phone over a reasonable amount of time.
