the "iPhone 8" should be called iPhone 7S and next year's phone should be 8. This year's names throws everything off. Well, that's my piece.

The 8 shouldn't even be called the 8. It's clearly a 7S, an incremental upgrade. Why the hell did Apple go iPhone 7, 8, 10 are they fucken copying Windows version progressions for no reason now?

(yes I know that it's the tenth anniversary of the iPhone or some other numerology but 8 -> 10 is just as dumb as 7S -> 10)

I mean, they did warn that they weren't refreshing their desktops until 2019, but lol at the biggest market cap corporation in all of human history playing it safe still with their product lines when they have room for risk. Since the '90s they've always been running lean for a company of that size and wealth. I understand that it's better than being enterprise wasteful but sometimes they act like a business with anorexia

RIP iPhone SE2

Comment: The latest rumor is not the iPhone SE 2 many of us want to see

quote:

Sadly, today’s report doesn’t, either. The language of the piece seemed to give some hope, making liberal reference to it as an iPhone SE successor.

The new model would be Apple’s first low-cost smartphone since the launch of the iPhone SE in 2016, which started at $399. Though the name and price of the new model hasn’t been decided, it is viewed as the latest generation of the iPhone SE […]

The original iPhone SE sold about 30 million units in 2016 and another 10 million between 2017 and 2018, according to Yuanta Investment Consulting.

“The cheaper iPhone SE could serve as a sales momentum kicker the first half next year, if the new premium iPhones do not perform well in the coming months,” Jeff Pu, a veteran tech analyst at GF Securities, told the Nikkei Asian Review.

But the label is the only thing that sounded remotely like the iPhone SE. Once we get into the detail, it sounds very much more like an iPhone 8 with updated internals.

The size of the new model will be similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 that was introduced in 2017, three sources said. The model will share most of the same components with the flagship iPhones this year, and it will feature the lower-cost liquid crystal display that will help Apple achieve the lower-starting price tag, although the final pricing for the model is not yet settled, the people said.

Sure, that’s the same concept as the iPhone SE — taking the form factor of an older iPhone and giving it the features of a newer phone at a relatively affordable price — but not the size or slab-sided design for which the iPhone SE was loved.

So assuming this report is accurate, and such a device is in the works, my prediction is that it will look pretty much exactly like the iPhone 8. This would be the device that allows Apple to pull all its older Touch ID models from the lineup, while still offering a budget model with modern performance.

It would be a smart business move. Nobody who could afford a more expensive model would want it, as it’s an outdated design with none of the retro appeal or pocketability of the iPhone SE. So Apple protects its margins from people like me, who would buy a genuine iPhone SE 2 in a heartbeat but will instead be pushed into something more expensive. And the company can afford to disappoint us because, what else are we going to do?

they had better call it the iPhone 9 to reflect its lower power and because the iPhone X had the same nonsensical jumping to v. 10 cargo cult that Windows 10 / Win 10 Mobile / Android 10 all embody

yes I know the reason why they had to skip Windows 9, it doesn’t make it any better

lmao I forgot BlackBerry 10

quote:

Android 10 joins Windows 10, iPhone X, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Honor 10, Sony Xperia 10, Mac OS X, BlackBerry 10 and countless other 10s in the tech sphere. It's so bland that it should have been rejected even as a codename. From most corporations, this would have been an eyeroll moment. From Google, it's a travesty.

the fracas with Hey was pretty big but they ended up resolving things with Apple and then WWDC happened so everyone forgot about it until now. Even after Epic goes down in flames there's going to be more. I suppose you can try to make a tortured analogy about Tim Sweeney being Guaidó and dhh being John Bolton

Jimmy Carter posted:

everyone with any grievance towards the App Store as a platform is projecting onto this spat and it's incredibly annoying.

There's multiple legit issues with the store, some fundamental (when loving Panic can't make a living selling software on the App Store who can?), to logistical (devs can't issue refunds and barely can provide support), to the just ongoing rules fuckery (randomly nail you to the wall because we changed the interpretation of a rule). One side winning this dumb company fight won't fix any of the real, actual problems.

This probably highlights a more general phenomenon about corporations getting so big that they basically are unchallengeable except by another entity with deep pockets. Yeah people are projecting, but those people and/or businesses don't have the resources to mount their own flashy PR-manipulated legal campaign. Epic is definitely profiteering by tapping into a preexisting well of discontent, but what are the discontented gonna do? Tweet more? File a radar? Send Timb an email?

It's a hot summer and everyone in America is stuck indoors so might as well fight the power (what power? any power) while you're at it. The Color Revolution analogy earlier is apt. Putting aside Epic for a second, the wave of third party developer disgruntlement superficially resembles any other antiestablishment tension that's boiling over in society right now. Sure, odds are there's very, very few devs who are missing the rent because of boo hoo 30%, but it's hard to feel sympathetic towards Apple as their stock climbs to ever higher records. And whether you agree with Apple or not, they are unquestionably an authority that engages in forceful actions, and presently such authorities aren't exactly popular.

If it wasn't Epic, it'd just be someone else fanning the flames. And regardless who wins this dumb company fight- well, the mob at least gets to see some action and the illusion of things happening.

I’m sure Steam or UbiSoft or loving EA aren’t great platform keepers to deal with either, but you tend not to hear the same nightmares as with Apple. I’m not saying that Apple is inherently worse but I think their stebe jobes “my way or you’re outta here buster” act leads to a lot of unnecessarily bad feelings and optics.

So it’s not just the 30% cut, it’s also how much of a petty tyrant you look like in the process and how much of a hypocrite you look like too. Like I remember a big viral story a few months back had nothing to do with 30% or payments dick-waving, some poor schmo just had their account locked for weeks without explanation:
