woman visits her dad at apple, sees his iphone x prototype, makes (with his permission) a little video of her using it, and posts it on youtube

https://9to5mac.com/2017/10/24/iphone-x-closeup-hands-on/

yosposters living in or near cupertino may have been awakened this morning by the sonic boom of apple moving to disable dads account access and security badge

guys i am beginning to suspect that apple seeds early review units according to a strategy that will create the most positive buzz about their new product at launch, and not because the recipients "deserve" them or have a journalistic dedication to the truth

people are craving in-depth reviews! and they must be on launch day! they can’t wait a few days before every publication and blogger gets their hands on one and then writes their review. apple has a responsibility to serious journalists, not just some bloggers youtubers, only they can get the clicks produce the thorough long form reviews that the public depends on to make their phone buying decisions.
those people who need a complete 17 part technical breakdown of the new iphone are definitely going to buy samsung anroids now because they had to wait an extra couple of days to get some nerds discourse on the individual camera sensors

bad move, apple

I was far from alone in not getting an extended period of time to test the phone before the review embargo lifted. Here’s what others are saying in their reviews.

A thought that crossed my mind this week: What would Apple have done if Walt Mossberg hadn’t retired earlier this year?

good article (with beautiful photographs) about the new apple campus and jony ive interview

includes this passage

Cybernetic Vermin posted:

macos should also have been revised in a much better way, the osx switch was a hugely finicky task because it was so late that they had little choice but to take a very radical approach

apple tried at a resonable time (1988 iirc), but i don't really believe that the failure is a sign that it is not doable, just that they vacillated between too minor updates (what was actually released) and infighting over too unfocused and ambitious projects (pink)
apple had multiple efforts to update the classic mac os - taligent, pink, copland, gershwin. every single one of them ended up in a project death spiral. meanwhile the classic mac os got more and more obsolete and unstable because it was essentially in maintenance mode while everyone was working on the multiple, conflicting, doomed efforts at building its successor

amelio/spindler/late-sculley era apple was an almost unimaginable shitshow in every possible way

when people talk about palm loving itself to death theyre talking about how it managed to fumble away its almost unimaginable lead in the smartphone race by doing things like splitting itself into two companies (hardware and software), which led to huge delays internally (as the corp reorganzied itself), huge brand confusion, and a collapse in their reputation for quality (shipping palm treo phones running winmo5 will do that). eventually they gave up and merged the two companies again (creating delays and further muddling the brand)

palm also demonstrated the first ever netbook (the foleo) and had a potentially huge advantage in that space (when netbooks were the next big hotness) and then they cancelled it before making any

i will give them credit for realizing that the iphone was a game changer and they needed to radically redo their entire product line to meet it, which was unlike microsoft (ballmer openly laughed at it) or rim (thought it was a gyspy illusion, fought back by shipping the storm), and webos is still being borrowed from for its ui. too bad they were out of money and time and market power to make ir successful (those weird-rear end ads didnt help either)
