Greyarc posted:Could I get some help for a modified 3DS? If it fails to boot with the SD card in then presumably your 'boot.firm' (probably Luma3DS) in the SD root is corrupted, or crashes attempting to read something corrupted after booting. Try replacing that with a fresh copy. Also, this might help, but try it as a last resort after trying a different SD card: https://3ds.hacks.guide/troubleshooting#black-screen-on-sysnand-boot-after-installing-boot9strap More specifically, the first thing a boot9strap hacked 3DS does after booting is attempt to execute 'boot.firm' off the SD card if one is inserted, or off the NAND if none is inserted. If the 'boot.firm' execution fails -- eg corrupted boot.firm or missing boot.firm --, it shuts back down. The recommended 'boot.firm' (Luma3DS) then resumes the regular system boot sequence with a few hooks in place to modify the running system menu to allow stuff like unsigned code. Does your 3DS automatically shut back down, or does it hardlock on a blank screen? Admiral H. Curtiss fucked around with this message at 11:07 on Jun 18, 2018 |

Since each cart has its own ID, I hope Nintendo will one day allow us to register a cart to our account so we can play it without the cart inserted. The ID of the cart would give you a license to download the game and play it. Then if someone else puts that cart into their switch, they gain the license and you lose yours. It was what I was hoping Microsoft would move on to when they announced their disc license system until people stated crying about not being able to sell a game that just came out to Gamestop for five dollars.

Not even remotely feasible since it mandates always-online and the Switch is extremely far from that. Far too few people have robust enough internet connections for a forced all-digital future to be a thing even today, the economics behind it all still need physical releases for various reasons, and physical is nice since stores can override pricing to clear out inventory and stuff like that (hell yeah Canadian E3 pre-order pricing).

It is more feasible with the Switch than the Xbox One though. At least the Switch you could take to a public wifi hotspot relatively easy and do a check. Yeah it won't happen, but at least it wouldn't be annoying or difficult as it could be.

Is there a way to backup/load saves with the Tegra exploit or are they still working on that?

Try replacing that with a fresh copy. That did it! boot.firm had been corrupted, so replaced it with a fresh copy. Everything seems to be back to working order. Did buy a second SD card as well to try the other method, so now I've got a ready backup. Thanks so much, guys! I really appreciate the help. (Also, extra thanks for the LP tools you've made, Admiral Curtiss, they make things much easier.)

It turns out that Ubisoft is going to let people who don’t want the toys buy added ships, pilots, and parts digitally. You still can do the assembly in the game, but you won’t have toys to deal with if they aren’t your thing. The developer who showed me Starlink said he couldn’t get into pricing, but he said he believed the digital versions would be cheaper than the physical versions. (He also said that the game records a digital version of any toys you buy for it, meaning you only ever have to connect the toys to the game once.)

They could just make it so you can install from the cart. It would be a fun way to screw pirates. "Yeah, you pirated that game, good luck keeping the license longer than a few seconds to play it." Just make it so you have to be online to play without the cart, but you can play offline with it. Also in other news, I don't have the link, because I'm in my phone, but Nintendo has started banning individual cart certificates. Looks like that is how they might stop piracy. Rip a game and upload it, Nintendo sees more than one of that cert, and they ban it.

It would suck to buy a used cart and get banned for it. It would suck even harder to buy an original game, sell it, then get banned when the guy who bought it from you decides to rip it.

That still opens the possibility of two people playing simultaneously with a game that was only paid for once, something Nintendo is very much against, not to mention Nintendo's online is flaky enough as-is without people needing to constantly check in for their single player installs. Anyway it's about time they started keying individual physical copies, given they've been doing that on PC for almost 20 years now (even the most voracious game pirates still generally bought a copy of Diablo II since you needed a unique key for Battle.net goodness).

gmq posted:It's really weird they upload the icons when every Switch should have all the available icons, including all the possible Mii features and poses. That's a kajillion images they would have to store as opposed to just posing a Mii and rendering an image. Though I guess they should put more effort into verifying. Run some sort of server side check on an image to make sure it conforms to a possible Mii image.

# ? Jun 22, 2018 18:47 |

A Mii is like 80 bytes (or was on the Wii anyway) so storing that plus a few extra bytes seems a million times more effective than actually storing the rendered output.

Is this a good guide to use if I just want to run a SNES emulator? That's all I really want to do. Any reports of bannings for simply emulating? Also, I still want to be able to regularly use the eshop which I assume requires updating the Switch as updates are released, which I also assume will require the homebrew launcher I have installed to be updated to be able to work with those future updates. Any way around this? On other devices I've emulated on, you've pretty much had to trade off between emulating and using the online shop.

Not yet, but people are getting banned even after clearing their error logs through the Switch menu and using hekate so it may be logging errors secretly and sending them to nintendo so anything could happen.

Don't hack your switch unless you have a backup or don't care about getting it banned or whatever. They're gonna be vigilant about it for a while.

I haven't been following that side of things -- why? Is it some kind of emunand/reversible situation in which you didn't burn fuses and can downgrade? Are there any benefits to doing so that outweigh the potential of coldboot CFW on 1.0.0?
