There's a big difference between "we have plans for an update" and "we're actively working on an update." They've had plans for an update for three years, but god knows if they've made any progress whatsoever during that time.

i mean, their business at this point is designed to make the most money. new ips and fixing bugs or adding new features, as fun as they are, generally don't make anywhere near as much money as lootboxes and running a store. when faced with "make a shitload of money" or "make some gamers happy" i can definitely see how you end up picking the former in this kind of a world

So with FaceIt having some success with TF2, an old school clan wars league started up, 12v12 no banned weapons. They just had their finals for the first season.

How the gently caress do you play vanilla 12v12 these days? Finding a game in matchmaking that doesn’t have 4 spinbotters on each team is nearly impossible and community servers are 50v50 instant respawn or some other horribly unbalanced bullshit

There are some nearly vanilla community servers and faceit. Uncletopia, creators.tf, and casual.tf are pretty good but have not random spread, damage, or crits. The other option is FaceIt, which is no random damage, spread, or crits as well, but it’s one map at a time then you get bumped out of the system. It’s more serious so screwing around isn’t really an option compared to other servers.

100% vanilla is going to be hard to find.

I paper over the problem with TF2 Bot Detector. It's an application that works over rcon and keeps a list of known bots, as well as any you mark manually. When it detects one, it automatically initiates a kick vote if they're on your team, or it spams chat if it's on the other team. It has some simple rules for detecting some bots (like illegal characters in names or use of newlines in chat), and probably its most useful feature is detecting if their TF2 name is different than their steam name (which almost always indicates that the player is a bot.)

It also displays the kills/deaths of every player on the server, and has markings for racist or suspicious players. It's pretty rad and basically the only reason I can still play casual.

What you are describing is vanilla 12v12.

As the poster above me said, there are a lot of options outside the game. I play on faceit on weekends and it's great. You do get the occasional vocal try-hard, but I've seen people running demoknight and joke classes too. Yet to see friendlies or bots, but have had organic high-fives with the enemy.

An update to Team Fortress 2 has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart Team Fortress 2. The major changes include:
  • Added the Summer 2021 Cosmetic Case
    • Contains 18 new community-contributed items
    • Adds 6 new community-created Unusual effects
  • Numerous security and stability improvements
  • Added a cooldown before a player can create a vote when they join a match already in-progress
    • sv_vote_late_join_time controls the grace period after the match starts before the cooldown is applied: default 90 secs
    • sv_vote_late_join_cooldown controls the length of the cooldown: default 5 min
  • Kick votes will end early and automatically pass if the vote target leaves the match during the vote
  • Added a ConVar to control players changing their name during a match
    • tf_allow_player_name_change: default is 1
    • Matchmaking servers will set this to 0
  • Updated the player list in the vote-kick dialog to show the time each player has been connected to the server
  • Removed the disconnect reason from the message when players leave the server
  • Updated the Mann vs. Machine "inspect" command to only work for players in your party or in your Friends list
  • Moved materials for the community particle effects into the Effects/workshop sub-folder to distinguish them from Valve materials
  • Updated/Added some tournament medals
  • Updated the localization files
  • Updated cp_snakewater_final1
    • Fixed clipping throughout map
    • Fixed explosion splash being caught by objects throughout map
    • Made movement smoother throughout map
    • Reworked some problematic areas like the kitchen
    • Minor visual enhancements throughout the map
  • Updated cp_process
    • Fixed incorrect skin for the Red radio tower
Some of this actually makes sense (but why wasn't it added years ago).
Preventing name changes during games, showing how long a player has been connected in the votekick list, canceling votekicks if the target leaves.

I wonder if they fixed being able to put newlines in a chat message, and putting zero-width characters or homoglyphs in your name (so you can impersonate another user.)

Bread Liar
That seems like it would be handled by this:

quote:

Added a ConVar to control players changing their name during a match
tf_allow_player_name_change: default is 1
Matchmaking servers will set this to 0

Matchmaking servers won't let you change your player name when you connect.

Played a few rounds of casual. Bot free! Of course, we'll see if that holds up over time. It could just be that the bot havers need to adjust their scripts.

i swear this is like the third time that this exact thing has been in the patch notes. maybe it actually works reliably this time.

tho even before this patch i'd seen a few players that would play out half the match reasonably normally before suddenly starting to micspam and aimbot and call kick votes. not sure if that was a bot maker trying something new or just kids getting pranked by the free version of cheats.

I haven't really played in 6 months but back when I was playing I would mostly see this on the losing team, so I figured it was people turning on/turning up the cheats because they couldn't stand losing.

It appears to work -- a few bots in a match I was in got kicked rather than leaving.

Granted, I don't know what GOOD that does. Is there some sort of temp ban from TF2 for getting kicked too much?
