Yeah this is bad for the game as a whole. Community servers and pug groups can deal with it by having active moderators, but casual is going to implode.

The cheaters suck, but hackers with RCE are much worse. Creators.tf just shutdown citing security concerns:  Between this and Rick May's death, April 2020 is officially the worst TF2 month ever.

I think people are still going threw the leak, but I’ve seen talks elsewhere of a Remote Code Execution being found, which means people can run stuff from another computer on yours. I think it might be smart to give it a while until Valve does something. Ive played other games that have been open sourced and usually it just makes people cheat, but this seems like it’s potentially worse due to spaghetti code.

poo poo, first Rick May dies, and now this happens. I'm wondering if I should just uninstall TF2. I've mostly played casual since I reinstalled it, but I don't want to take the risk of getting my computer hijacked by anything until this blows over.

I already uninstalled, and I don't think I'll be reinstalling again. It being open source now means it's just a matter of time before another bug gets found, and I don't trust Valve to stay on top of it. Rest in peace, Rick May. Rest in peace, TF2. the silver lining here is that since they share a lot of source code that any RCEs will be fairly likely to be in the shared part of the code, I'd think. while Valve might be willing to abandon TF2, I don't think they will abandon CS:GO. The bad news is that this is potentially wider than just TF2/CS:GO and there also might be stuff in there that nukes stuff like Titanfall that are also built on Source Engine. We literally just got the game back on pc after 9 months of a hacker using some lobby exploits to auto-eject you from the lobby.

valve has already shown to be awful at getting rid of hackers in tf2 for years so i genuinely wouldn't touch the game right now unless you really want your computer to be remotely set on fire an optimist would maybe say that this would inspire valve to do something with tf2 for once but i'm prepared to assume that they would rather just shutter the game than lift a finger, lmao

It's all rumor right now, but if there is an RCE and the RCE impacts several Source games (incl. the incredibly popular CS:GO) then Valve will certainly fix it and that fix will roll out to all impacted Source games. So, odds are good that TF2 will be fixed. Yeah all of the RCE that was “found” was a hoax. I’ve played a couple rounds on community servers without any issue. On another note, I lowered my sensitivity because of trying out Valorant and overshooting. Soldier and demo are interesting with a really low sense, especially a scout getting up in your face.
