Several people have been asking about this game lately, so I thought I'd make a place where we could talk about it. Unfortunately I'm not very creative so please bear with the bad OP. I'll just post some basic info -

quote:

ELEX is a science fantasy themed action role-playing video game developed by Piranha Bytes and published by THQ Nordic. It was released worldwide on October 17, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows.

So it's made by the same people who did the Gothic and Risen games which probably means to expect a fair bit of jank. Still though, the reviews don't look terrible on Steam and quite a few goons seem to be enjoying it so far. I'm just about to get started with it myself, so I can't really offer any opinions yet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTicsIK5umw

I know as much about video game reviews as I do of making good threads but here is a video anyway. I mostly just wanted a dedicated place to discuss the game and post advice or whatever, so here it is. Also if someone wants to make a better post I'll happily close this thread.

It seems the secret to your success is a combination of boundless energy and enthusiastic insolence...
I haven't played too much but I've run into a fair number of monsters that have taken next-to-no damage from my attacks and instakilled me, so it is truly in that Gothic vein. Still weighing faction choices and gingerly exploring / hoarding herbs.

I'm going to dump a whole bunch of new player info since I'm now closing in on 12? hours in.

- Beserkers are probably the chillest faction to join initially. Lots of companions during quests, lots of pretty easy around town quests initially. You can also be rolling in health potions by being friendly with them.

- Be nice to Duras. It's extremely easy to get him as a companion, and he's SUPER USEFUL. Even if you don't plan on sticking with the Beserkers it's worthwhile to do his quest and take him along for some ruins exploration.

- On that note, companions can't die. They just take a knee.

- Dex/Ranged is probably the best early on. You get to start with a sneak attack basically every combat, and the mobility the jetpack offers makes it super easy. Once you unlock your first companion you can start taking on stuff far higher level then you. Don't ignore bows just because they aren't guns, they do fairly absurd damage, especially early on.

- Factions are a bit strange. Beserkers are melee weapons, potions ( slower but more powerful ), magic, and "old tech" ( aka bows and......shotguns. ). So the 12 gauge you can find early on actually is a'ok with the Beserkers. Clerics are laser weapons, drones, and "psy" attacks ( basically magic but more tricky based. ). Outlaws are old world weapons ( shotguns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers ), drugs ( basically buffs of all types ), and stims ( can use instantly but super weak ).

- If you really like the Beserker town, stay there and help out. Do the ruins nearby. Enjoy yourself. But if not I'd say leave it immediately and go head up north to Tavaar or Ignadon. One of the things this game does best is how it handles being a Fallout style game, letting you explore old towns/forts/whatever and seeing a ruined world. Which works really well in 75% of the map, but the starter area is a lush fantasy jungle with lush fantasy creatures. It's cool and I liked it, but it took a long time for it to click with me. Once I left and went to meet the Clerics was when the game suddenly started showing it's real promise to me. Don't burn out on the Beserkers if you don't like them, you don't need their quests.

Will Duras get pissed and leave if I join the Outlaws? Because that's what I want to do.

I don't think so. I had him with me when I talked to the Clerics about joining and he didn't seem to care. I didn't actually join ( enchant weapon works on guns I found out, and I found out Beserkers are also the shotgun faction. ), so maybe he would have, but ymmv.

I'd still grab him by virtue of how easy he is to get. His quest takes less then 30 minutes to complete. And if he does leave, by that point you'd have met the Outlaws and gotten their companions.

Alrighty, I finally started it up. It seems pretty cool so far, although I only have a pipe thingy and a bow I found in that first building you come across. Do you guys think I need to commit purely to one weapon type or would it be okay to kinda split down the middle for melee/ranged? I still don't really understand the game's systems yet. And speaking of, I already found some elex. The description showed a 20s buff it would give me but also says it can be used for other stuff. I'm not sure what I should be doing with it yet, but I'm just getting my feet wet.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if investing so heavily into intelligence early on to try and snag that extra attribute point per level skill was worth it. It'll take forever to pay off and Outlaws don't seem to have much use for Int. Kinda considering going for Clerics just so there's some use to this giant pile of Int I ended up investing in.

On that note, for anyone who wants to get some more of that sweet sweet exp, there's a pretty quickly accessible amulet that grants the bonus exp from quests skill that normally takes 50 int to get. It's in the northern World Seed camp, the one close to the Domed City, in that little room that you get cutscene pushed out of if you attempt to go in the front, but you can pretty trivially sneak in through the side and nab it.

Also on that note, for some nice easy EXP early on just do the first part of the main quest. You'll have to avoid some dangerous enemies on the way and there's a tricky fight against two Albs before you get in the tower place, but inside is really easy, has a lot of good loot, and a companion at the top if you don't wanna use Duras for whatever reason.

Alright, just played for a while and got to that Berserker town. I'm still enjoying the game so far, but combat definitely feels janky to me. I kept having issues with my dude not swinging his weapon sometimes which seemed weird. I think it may have to do with the camera or not facing my target directly. Also may have something to do with locking onto a target which either happens automatically or I'm just fumbling around and hitting a button but I don't think so. It's getting late, I'll just have to mess around with it more later.

Yes to all three questions, including really powerful items laying around in the world. The discovery of these is a bit dampened by the fact that everything has insanely high stat requirements though.

Yeah, I highly recommend giving the bow/Cleric weapons you find a try. Both feel a lot more manageable early on.

If you want to go to the Clerics base quickly just run north up the highway to the Domed City and activate the teleporter there.

You will find elex drinks around that you can drink for bonuses and to turn your character into a liar as you chug a gallon of elex just before you tell someone you're free from the stuff. The small ones give 100 xp, medium ones give 2 attribute points but the strong ones are by far the best giving you 1 skill point. You might want to save the small and medium sized ones until you find the recipes that let you craft them into the strong one.

If anyone is having trouble, get yourself a flamethrower. You can either buy it from the Cleric's main city or get a free one in Tavar by starting the main quest "The Big Bang" by talking to the Duke, and then going to the nearest marker to The Fort, jetpack in and grab the flamethrower before the rippers get you. Then you can buy fuel for it for 1c a pop from the main Cleric city, put it on fireball mode. It does decent damage, and a DOT, but most importantly, it knocks enemies down with each hit.

Awesome. The early trailers made it look like they smoothed the game down, kinda looked like a janky Witcher 3. I respect the seamless "perfection" of The Witcher series but I prefer the feel of Gothic, warts and all.

I haven't been to the Cleric towns yet, but I really like the Berserker town and I really dislike the Outlaw town. I also don't like the Outlaw armor designs, especially the way their hands clip into their armor when they fold their arms. Don't see myself playing as one, sadly, in the Gothic games I always liked each faction.

Here's some advice for new players. Get a shield and a one-handed weapon and you can defeat pretty much any human enemy, at least in 1v1. With a shield, your strong attack knocks them down. When they start attacking, block or dodge, until their stamina bar is empty. Then knock them down. Your stamina regens, theirs doesn't. When they stand up, hit them 2-3 times, finish with another knockdown. Repeat forever.

Doesn't work on monsters because their stamina works differently and they can hit back.

The game has had a positively silly amount of love poured into the world, any landmark or terrain feature that looks particularly jetpack-y almost always has a reward. Early spoiler jetpack up the starting ruins

Unlike many other openworld games, there are no invisible barriers. I scaled up a large mountain in Ignadon to escape a monster one shotting NPC patrols and what do I find?

A skeleton resting it's head on a rock. :3: You've got the right idea, skeleton.

The game is typical PB jank but when they craft classic Gothic, Fallout and generic sci fi into a single setting, I had to give them another chance (Gothic 3 was not their best work).

I only wish there was an outright way to relax equipment stat requirements, either a specialisation or familiarity perk that upgrades passively. Unless you plan carefully you might be fooled that the game expects you to dump points into five different stats. The devs almost certainly expected people to craft as many elex potions as humanly possible, as quickly as possible.

Ohhh yeah I finally leveled up enough (and crafted a dozen of elex potions) to wear that Energy Sword I found in a ruin. 53 str, 43 dex, I think. It melts through enemies.

If you want that sword: The priest at the Mana shrine in Goliet gives you a quest to find an Elex thief. You'll find him (and his mutant brother) in a building nearby, there you can go down the stairs into a poisonous basement. You'll take some damage but the sword is right there at the bottom of the stairs.

About that basement there is also one of those ultra-rare plants that, if this game follows typical PB rules, will eventually be used for permanent stat buff potions.

Turn off autolock in the difficulty settings asap everybody, especially if you play kb+m.

What is the general opinion on elex potions? The small ones with +100 exp are worthless of course but should I drink all the medium ones for attribute points, so I can use better gear, or craft them into skill point potions? Don't know how much I gimp myself in lategame if I waste potential skillpoints.

Risen was... at best ok, far as I recall.

This though I'm loving almost as much as Gothic 2. Somehow choices matter more here than in Mass Effect Andromeda which is kinda impressive. However, having a hell of a time trying to find the hidden notes that lead to Calaan, the "four houses" notes . I've gotten like 5-6 out of 9 but I really hope there will be a map or something in the coming days to show where to find them all since the pictures you get can be pretty obscure.

Edit: Far as I know it may be permanent, but I don't think you lose the skillpoint for managing to piss them off. But you can't get any more skills from them either.

I was irritated by that as well, but you can disable it in the difficulty settings.

I was skeptical about the combat early on, but now I like it a lot. It is a throwback to the clunky, slow, inertia based combat of Gothic, compared to the sleeker Risen 3 system, but it is much more forgiving about combos than Gothic ever was.

The key thing is that you should only ever start attacking when your stamina is full, that way you can perform the special move without running out of steam before you get the prompt. Also increasing stamina seems to be more important than anything else.

Useless? Sholdn't it be the other way around? Usually in these games, you get the super-duper best weapon after fighting the hardest boss in the game, and then have exactly 0% game left to use it on.
