That's like a used Honda Civic. I'm comfortable gambling with that amount of money since my other finances are taken care of. The gamble is "will this 10 grand turn into 0 within 12 months from now" which is why I've been toying with the idea. Nothing is set in stone.

Lol yeah dude. Crypto is going to 0, sure. Any day now . * 10 years later and mass adoption, insitutional investment, 10,000% gains later * Yep any day now.

Weird how the only folks actually working on blockchain gaming are little indie projects whose other hooks are, universally, "there's loot" and "it uses AR."

You would think, given salt shakeup's understanding of the tech involved, that the big companies would be jumping on this.

Do you think that salt shakeup might be wrong about the tech?

You're still increasing your contribution to the problem of pollution on purpose even if other actions mean that you're adding to it at a lesser total rate than other people. Your impact is not relative, it is absolute; you don't get points for being below average, you lose them for being below average and deliberately loving that up on purpose; and you are doing all this for no benefit to anyone. When the crypto networks collapse, all of your additional environmental damage will amount to is some deliberately burnt-out hardware.

Shumagorath posted:

They tell other people not to do mining because it's bad for the environment, but it's fine for them to do it because they're so good for the environment in other ways it's okay for them to gently caress it up on purpose a little bit as long as they're "getting paid" to do so.

They're not a net negative but they're much lower than average so it's fine.

It's fine.

drat you sure got me

The "thinking about mining" question comes up a lot more frequently than you'd think

e: it is absolutely absolute 100%-- if I consume 400kwh per month and someone consumes 400kwh per month and wants to start mining and this would jump their consumption to 700kwh per month, and I tell them not to and they listen, then I've saved the environment. it's a net positive. that's factually how it works. except i'm 200-500kwh under the national average monthly consumption so already i'm basically eco jesus and it doesn't matter what i do with my minimal kwh consumption

I tell them exactly what everyone in this thread says about mining and crypto. I'm not going to give dishonest advice. I do it because I have a GPU that I bought for gaming and it happens to also be able to net me some money. The market is volatile, crypto is not an investment, they're better off putting their money into something with better returns or not even worrying about it and use that money for something life-improving like the grounds for a new hobby or a memorable trip, it's super inconvenient to build a rig and have it act as a space heater, it's complicated to set up for the vast majority of people, rig parts are hard to get and way more expensive than they have any good reason to be, etc.

It doesn't loving matter where the electricity is coming from, it's being burnt to make and process bullshit coins and that electricity could have gone to a hospital or to computer networks that fold proteins or anything useful.
