Isn’t halfing like a stock split? Why would that reduce production?

It's very different from that, it means it becomes twice as hard to mine (I think they call it halving because mining efficiency halves? I don't know.) It happens regularly, which is why you can't just run your AMD radeon 4800 overnight and get one bitcoin anymore. Basically as more bitcoins are mined, it gets harder to mine, until you hit 21 million and then there's no more bitcoins.

Should I mine altcoins? I've been told I can make ~2 eur per day with my mid tier graphics card after electricity expenses and I will heat my apartment for free. Downside is that I increase my carbon foot print somewhat and become a coiner. Is it worth it?

So here's how it'll work. You'll mine and get extra heat output while your video card is running. Your electric bill will be higher as a result. The power company doesn't take cryptocurrency. As long as you're prepared to pay them in cash and receive random shitcoins for the additional expense over a normal bill then yeah, it's worth it. Whether or not it's actually worth it is up to you and your faith in the whatever-coin being tradable for something of value at a later date. Also you have to not care about wasting power, but let's face it, if you're going to be a self made coiner tycoon I think that's given.

I must be missing something regarding the reported miners buying SSDs.

Chia's proof of storage system, from what I understand from their white paper, is periodic lottery system where your chance of winning is proportional to the size of your plots compared to the global pool. It's economic to put some plots on your archiving HDD that has a few TB leftover, you just remove plots as you need more space. It shouldn't be worth buying drives for that express purpose, and especially not SSDs.

Sounds like burst coin from a few years ago which was "proof of capacity." I don't remember what happened with that one but I haven't heard about it in a long time so I'm guessing a whole lot of nothing. I do remember joking about burst coin and siacoin which were the two hard disk fillers, one was to fill your drive with nonces, one was where nonces fill your hard drive. It was funnier at the time.

So are they just going to use the space and then nothing else can use it forever or something? Just piles of useless hard disks? Disk space hardware rots over time so how does this even work?

The old ones were just doing a lot of reads after the initial writes. While disks do just randomly die it's not a very difficult workload for a lot of them, even SMR disks which are terrible for repeated writes but fine for write once read many. It seems like that article is some fear mongering since an SSD won't do that much over a HDD at that workload and I haven't heard much about burst or sia since it came up here before. I think linus tech tips even did a video on one of the hard disk proof of capacity things and it didn't take off. I mean LTT is awful and stupid but it's popular so I'd imagine if that couldn't launch it, a toms hardware article won't either.

That said everything in the last couple of years has been more depressing and stupid than imaginable so maybe it will go big and we'll be buying and selling 500gb laptop drives for $100 just to get grandma's pc onto facebook or whatever bullshit has happened to GPUs.

As a tangential reminder, coiners are not actually the type of people you can trust. Not to babysit your kids or not to chargeback purchases while not returning the goods or anywhere involving money. They must have “trustless” access to Bitcoin simply because they have proved themselves to the normal economy that they are, in fact, UNTRUSTWORTHY people. They aren’t allowed or have previously shown themselves to be thieves, scammers, and money laundering thugs. They show this with the things you buy with crypto: drugs, child pornography, guns for felons, contraband, ransomware keys, fake IDs, illegal document forgery including digital IP they don’t own, and “ISIS futures.”

They already are the unbanked. Nobody will do real-money transactions with them because they have proven they cannot act in good faith when presented with access to dollars, forcing them to use “alternatives” to useful normal currency like Euros or Yen or Chuck-E-Cheese tokens. That’s who needs “trustless” money: The Untrustworthy.

Yep, I used to do a lot of phone and computer ad viewing with a farm of phones and virtual machines. From 2013 until 2019 or so there was good profits in it that easily paid for the equipment, internet, and power. Payout was usually done in amazon gift cards or sometimes (at a lower rate) by paypal. In the last two or three years many of the good services have shut down and there's shadier replacements who have started up. Most of them prefer to do cryptocurrency payouts so I have mostly stopped doing it (there's only a couple left that I still use that will do amazon or paypal). We had a thread in C&D for a while but it died out due to so many of the services shuttering a couple of years ago. Shady services often vanish with your balance, require a bunch of referrals to be completed before payouts (oh hey, a pyramid scheme of contact information), or whatever.

Regarding Helium, weren't there various attempts back in the early-mid 2000s to create crowdsourced city-spanning wifi networks? I have vague memories of reading about custom firmwares for access points that let you share your internet connection. People could pay for access to the network and the people who offered up their access point would receive a bit of kickback.

I don't recall it ever really taking off, and then 3G and 4G came along and made it all moot.

Yeah, there was some move to do that. Comcast ended up just making every modem/router they provide come with a backdoor xfinity wifi access point included. Then when they launched their own cell phone service they claimed it had a huge amount of coverage because of all the access points you can get onto if you use xfinity.
