Germany�s resistance to spending more on defense would evaporate.

Those moves would make Russia even more dependent on China, opening Putin up to pressure from Beijing.

And unlike during the Cold War, the U.S. has to split its attention between Asia and Europe.

Another big concern is that China could use a crisis in Ukraine to try and take Taiwan by force, a step that would thrust the world into an even deeper crisis.

what NATO did for ukraine was, in 2008, knowing full well russia's position on ukraine and nato since at the very least 2nd yelcin term, tell ukraine that they're most definitely gonna be in nato

and after that did absolutely nothing to actually getting them into nato, directly leading to the events in 2014. if they didn't string them along (either by simply not saying bullshit, or by not telling them in public how they're tolly getting in any time now while doing nothing), i highly doubt any of this would be going on right now

i don't give a poo poo about russia's ~security concerns~ but also lmfao @ idiots pretending this wasn't also directly caused by nato completely ignoring russian wishes for ~20 years until they figured they're in a position to not give a poo poo and go for it

Maidan was a revolution agitating for Ukraine to join the EU, not NATO. Which is even more unrealistic if you think about it for even a second. EU has zero interest in letting a shithole country like Ukraine in the club, but they'll string them along indefinitely the same way they did Turkey or do for Serbia.

tl;dr: Bush Administration wanted to offer Ukraine and Georgia Membership Action Plans as an end of term legacy. The French and Germans did not. So they just put out a statement saying "yeah one day" with no plan to do so while royally pissing off the Russians.
