China has a big bureaucracy designed to perpetuate itself so I think it'll muddle through. The Moscow Times quoted an Uber driver today going to vote, and he said he voted for Putin because his friends had already stolen everything worth stealing so a new president would just start the process over again. That's some heavy cynicism.

i misread the original statutes. the travel restrictions only apply to first-class train and plane tickets and other forms of luxury travel, referred to as "conspicuous consumption." so, lol. this is obviously specifically targeting wealthy business people

On the one hand, if this is true, this is a great law unironically.

On the other hand, lol that you asserted there were financial hardship exceptions for a law that targets the rich.

would love to know the actual source of this

the bland, 50s propaganda style voiceover notwithstanding, it’s a very powerful critique, as its author must have been aware

the source where i initially read that was from 2014 and speculative. i found a place with good translations of the ndrc policy briefings that's updated regularly.

Don't think the PLA have started any huge, genocidal wars on the initiative of some mid-ranking officers yet, so I'd say Imperial Japan is still worse.

though tbf jiang's tenure WAS characterized by the widespread corruption now being dealt with by the ccdi and now the state supervisory commissions

sure xi's family "mysteriously" ended up with hundreds of millions, he imprisoned scores of human rights lawyers, and confiscated the passports of ethnic minorities but at least the trains run on time :haw:

pre-ww2 Japan was shook as gently caress all the time and operating almost entirely out of (very real) fear about thesize of their fleet and their vulnerability to anglo financial predation or communist rebellion at home

China has a lot of problems but its economy is strong enough to make it sovereign in a way that Japan never was, all of its neighbors are starting to embrace it or are just unable to fully oppose it anymore. It'll never dominate as hegemon like the US in the western hemisphere or in the immediate aftermath of WW2 Europe but it'll basically be a supercharged version of Germany in a region that will outclass the north atlantic in economic importance shortly
