it really sucks. Lots of the F4W crew have a gimmick of WE ACTUALLY HATE WRESTLING!!!! with Dave and Bryan as the mediators, but at least Vinny is funny to listen to. I mean, there's a reason people were excited for Bryan and Vinny to review some more TNA.

But yeah, Semp, just rambling sentences about how actually that thing you like? Completely and utterly RUINED because of some absolutely miserable, tiny, inconsequential detail that no one could possibly care about.

Vinny loves wrestling, but a lot of wrestling is actually very bad. I only ever listen to Dave and Vinny shows so like if the Wrestling Weekly guys hate wrestling I'll never know because in the first 10 minutes of their first episode they ran out the ol "If you've never wrestled you can't judge wrestling" so I never listened to them again.

as someone who loves the biker taker/flair feud, i can't argue with this. It's super dated, and people have seen the rise and fall out of suburban biker worship, but poo poo like Monster Garage and Chopper Build Challenge were in the American mainstream culture. I also think Rollin' is the reason they scoff at Biker taker in hindsight, but I think that's people hiding from their teenage copy of Hot Dogs and Chocalate Starfish.

Those things were all dumb and embarrassing back then, too.

I'm trying to come up with an example of current garbage that's "American mainstream" that's just as terrible. Maybe the way they keep integrating Twitter feuds onto the show?

In 2018, I'm pretty sure we can safely say that discussion on the internet is never going to result in this.

For anyone interested, when people were telling Dave not to apologize: they were right. I have a degree in communications and one of the big takeaways was when we looked at a good dozen case studies from the last 10 years in one of our PR classes that detailed why apologizing and trying to make amends are the wrong strategy to take.

Ah yes when I think "people who aren't complete scumbags" PR people are the ones I should look to?????

I hope the lesson learned here is that Dave shouldn't dance around the idea that WWE encourages workers to have fake boobs, and while we're at it, talk straight about them wanting an African American in the commentary booth for 'good optics'.

VJeff posted:

This makes complete sense and I will explain it using a recent example: Jericho vs. Omega from Wrestle Kingdom 12.

When you grab the ropes, you are no longer considered in the ring. So you cannot be pinned and you cannot be submitted, because you have to be in the ring for either of those things to count. For a pinfall, this breaks the pinfall. For a submission, the ref will start a count. If you do not break the count within 5 seconds, you are disqualified.

Jericho vs. Omega was a No DQ match. Early in the match when Jericho got Omega in the Walls, Omega got the ropes. But because it was no DQ, Jericho had no reason to fear losing from not letting go, so he held onto the submission. Very late in the match, Jericho got Omega in the Walls again, Omega got the ropes and Jericho let go this time. He didn't hold on because yes, technically, he could hold on as long as he wanted, but Omega wasn't in the ring anymore so he couldn't win even if he held on and Omega submitted. And this was after they had beaten the poo poo out of each other for half an hour, so Jericho was too exhausted to drag him back to the center of the ring, so he just let go.

So even in a No DQ match, rope breaks will stop a pinfall or submission from ending a match, but they won't force a submission to be released. You can hold on as long as you want, it just won't make you win even if they submit, as long as they're still in the ropes.

The concept of "you can not concede a match outside of the ring" is dumb as hell. So what happens if you are stuck in an inescapable hold outside? You're just stuck there forever until you die???

The concept of no rules matches in general is dumb as hell from an actual combat sports standpoint.

Well early No Holds Barred MMA was nearly no rules so it's not that much of a stretch.

Stuff like pins outside the ring not counting because you can say that they can only happen within the "wrestling surface" but telling someone "no you may not forfeit the match if you're getting murdered on the floor" is goofy as heck.
