Pixelbook is $700 for Black Friday, thinking of getting one to replace my Windows 2-in-1. Is there any big drawback i should be aware of, other than the obvious lack of Windows apps? It seems like a pretty good all-around laptop at that price.

I've had the new Pixelbook a day and I'm liking it. Not too much to say here -- it's light and nicely designed, I'm not really missing the Windows apps, and it's nice that I can do Linux stuff. I am not sure why I decided to buy the pen too, as I don't have any obvious use for it.

Jerk McJerkface posted:Squid is a really nice handwriting app. Thanks, looks interesting. Is it good for marking up long PDFs too? I have this 700-page math tome I've been going through on paper and I'm thinking of buying Squid's PDF import for that.

On the topic of Linux on Chromebooks, I was pleased to find I could install an open-source Java clone and run the board game program VASSAL. It even works pretty well despite not scaling for DPI: But I wasn't able to get VASSAL to read and write from my Dropbox. I tried installing Dropbox for Linux but it keeps segfaulting when I try to run it. Is there any way to get to something like Dropbox from within the Linux VM?

Anyone tried running JASP on the Linux VM? It runs for me but it's broken in some key ways (no graphics, no file access). I installed it the official way, via flatpak, but should I try compiling it or something?

When I sign out of my Pixelbook or turn it off -- usually because something isn't working quite right -- it takes ages to get back to the sign in screen. This time it was at least 10 minutes from signout to sign-in, which is really annoying. I press keyboard keys and the power button with no apparent effect, though the backlit keyboard is still on. Any obvious fix or should I just send it back to Google? I don't really want to powerwash because I'll lose my Linux apps -- is there a way to backup the Linux filesystem while I'm at it? e: I can't replicate this problem consistently so I guess it won't be easily fixable. As it doesn't happen most of the time and I don't need to sign out much, I can live with it for now. Vivian Darkbloom fucked around with this message at 17:41 on Feb 26, 2019 |

VideoGameVet posted:Can someone with a Chromebook (that supports Android Apps) let me know if my climate game works on it? Installs and plays fine on my Pixelbook. I only tried for a minute but everything seemed to work like I expected. Some highlights on important text would improve usability on the Chromebook a little.

Speaking of Pixelbooks, would you say this is a good sign? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D8MQsSuuvA I let the battery run down last night and this happens now when I try to charge it. At least there's a decent warranty.

bull3964 posted:I've had mine do that a few times. There is a trick to getting it working again, though now I can't remember. I think there's a key combination to bypass the battery and get it to boot directly off ac power which resets the hardware and gets everything working again. Then when you restart it works normal again on battery. I've noticed no ill long term effects. I couldn't find the combination to boot from AC, but after letting it stay plugged in for a while it turned out I could power it on by unplugging it. Not thrilled about it but it seems to work for now.

I have a base model Pixelbook and I have been doing some online tutoring using video chat with screen sharing. I like to use Squid as a whiteboard with the pen (should have bought a not-Google Pen, this thing is poo poo) which does an ok job. It's far better than online whiteboards, not least because it properly detects writing pressure. But it crashes after 15-20 minutes of screen sharing in Zoom or Google Hangouts. The developers said it was a Chrome OS issue and I should file a bug with them. I might try that but are there any good alternatives in the meantime? And would I benefit from getting a better pen?

ThermoPhysical posted:Do you have a Zoom issue where the drat app takes over anything you have on the screen when on the Pixelbook? I had to stop using it yesterday and uninstalled it since it decided it had priority over my apps whenever someone so much as breathed and their mic took focus. That happens when I have Zoom on in the background. No idea why it's programmed that way, very annoying, but when I'm screen sharing other people talking doesn't steal focus.

Another longshot: any idea why running VS Code in Linux is hard crashing my Pixelbook? The computer might be developing some problem, because that's a lot of hard crashes, but I only seem to get them in Squid while screen sharing and when in VS Code.

On my Pixelbook I'm having trouble with the taskbar, which I can't get to show up after signing in. Anyone else have this issue? I'm on the beta channel and I tried powerwashing already, which didn't fix it.

Any idea why my Pixelbook might not be recognizing a known good USB-C thumbdrive?

Google has always had a habit of dabbling in new products and not really committing (cf. Galaxy phones) but I wish they'd make a new Pixelbook that's just a real good laptop with some upgrades, like fixing the lousy webcam. The Pixelbook Go is a little cheaper but sounds a lot more compromised.
