While I concede that racism against Asians is particularly tenacious and rampant while being subtle, and there should be zero tolerance for racism and whatnot, I think the punishment for the gesture has far exceeded the crime at this point. People are essentially ignoring Darvish's response.

I don't know where this narrative that Darvish was cool with the gesture comes from, but he was obviously bothered by it, based on his response

People wanted him to miss a World Series game and the Astros could have done that and probably should have. But I doubt it would have stopped the boos
