Arven posted:I have seriously wondered how more of them aren't killed. They are either confronting somebody who is probably armed out in the middle of nowhere, or performing what most people would think is an illegal search on the homes/property of people who will certainly be armed. And they're probably alone with their support only having a rough idea of their location for all of it. Going by the refuge I worked at this summer, it's because there's fewer and fewer of them since agencies can't actually hire new people. Fun fact: There was one LEO for the entirety of Long Island when I got there in March. She left the week I arrived. When I finished my internship in August they still didn't have a replacement

TheGreasyStrangler posted:He admitted to it, apologized, and had the apology accepted I think part of it is a genuine attitude of "what he did was hosed up, and nobody who commits or has committed those kinds of acts should be in a position of power," and part of it is "If he resigns, it removes any potential false equivilance to what Moore did, and makes it clear the Democratic Party does not accept or condone sexual assault by anyone." Personally, I'm a bit conflicted-no matter how you slice it, what Franken did was gross and wrong, and if he did it to one woman he almost certainly did it to others. But with that said, he's been a legitimately great Senator, he's apologized for his actions, his apology was accepted, and he's agreed to cooperate with an ethics committee hearing. Were it not for the election in Alabama, I think that would be more than enough-however, since Moore's actions have made it into a race the Democrats could actually win, you have to wonder if it might be better to have Franken fall on his sword to help prevent any chance of Moore getting in.

I remember when I was in high school our philosophy class had a Truman Trial, where we were supposed to determine whether Harry Truman's dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have counted as war crimes. I was selected to be Harry Truman, and on my way to the trial between classes I ran into my AP US History teacher and jokingly asked him what I should say. His suggestion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMYR8_33XgQ&t=25s High school was fun
