Fitz watch team was collectively dicking around while they drove inadvertently into a traffic separation scheme. They were all on the port bridgewing loving off, had a near miss on the starboard side, and then had a collision over there. The captain was hit in his cabin and had to be saved from from there hanging off the side of the ship. Holy gently caress. Like I know mates are stupid in the merchant world but usually we can isolate their stupidity. The JSM is really bad since you have several steps of not understanding the intent of an order/have the knowledge required to complete the order/do not seek comprehension in any way. There's times to gently caress around on the bridge, entering a high traffic situation is not one of them that's just lovely officers trying to get people killed.

Usually when arriving in a high traffic situation, you test everything and call out extra men to stand by as lookouts, sit in the engine room and monitor propulsion etc. It sounds like the Captain wanted to wait on this part. On the bridge console there's the stuff that's been listed, generally 3rd Mates out of an Academy shouldn't have a problem with it but may need a bit of practice, with a captain watching over their shoulder in high traffic situations. ABs usually steer on merchant ships. I know on one Suez transit we had one AB that could steer so he got it for the entire time. There's also the EOT, should be the two sticks on the far side of that console, that should give the bridge control over the engines. I'm not really sure how the Navy does things or what they do them that way though.

They just decide the timing usually, could say we don't need this part of it let them sleep. Everything else should be set already by checklist, just timing and location dependent. What was striking to me was lack of equipment knowledge by the senior bridge officers. Usually you have someone who knows those technical details up there at least and listen to them.

That's generally how it's done although if there is limited capability they have no problem adjusting on the fly and moving people to where they need to be. It doesn't sound like the helmsman did anything wrong except he should have questioned the order, asked for clarification or further knowledge as necessary.

No. They should have had the plan in place and ready to go. Some companies have gone to some form of this, such as tanker companies dropping anchor for rest requirements. In this situation the reason for being late would have been poor planning and no captain is going to admit to that. Edit: Some captains have the confidence/security to push back but it's unusual. So that tax plan takes away the exemption that PhD students get for the reduced/free tuition when they are researchers or teachers assistants. Since a typical fee structure would be like 50k/year waived tuition, 15-20k/yr paid labor, they would be taxed at a 65-70k tax bracket while making that 15-20k. Basically, this breaks down the current PhD track for all but the extremely rich and the grad students are freaking out about it over in the grad student thread.

I thought it was up there with the NYT as one of the more trustworthy news sources. I think the opinion pieces tend to be fairly liberal but the articles themselves seemed alright. Of course, everything I read online feels like an opinion piece now so I am generally confused.

The Franken thing so far is a lovely rehearsal and a bad picture where Franken isn't even touching her. So I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt here and accept that he did something wrong as both those things are legitimate and he should have talked through the rehearsal and not been a creeper for laughs but I can't get all indignant and act like he is scum of the earth over it at this point. Should I be seeing it some other way, compared to the allegations against Weinstein, Moore and others he is pretty much a saint so far and has done what he can to make amends?

Yeah I was trying to accept it at face value as those are the exact same talking points used by Trump et al. I am unsure as to when his behavior turned from simply boorish in such a he said she said situation to molestation/harassment that required condemnation.

The way I'm seeing it is he had a lovely kiss during a skit rehearsal that he stopped immediately and apologized for when she got uncomfortable followed by a boorish photo that did not involve touching. Maybe I'm just callous from all the poo poo I've seen but it's not moving the needle much, even if I think it was in poor taste and deserved an apology. Saying that if it was a Republican I would lose my mind just because I apparently cannot think logically or consistently does not help your case.
