2003: #3, traded up to #1 for MAF
2004: #2, Evgeni Malkin (thank god the Caps hosed up and took the inferior Russian #1 amirite?)
2005: #1, Sidney Crosby
2006: #2, Jordan Staal (they hosed this one up though, Staal was good but they passed on Toews)

Way to leave out #5 overall Ryan Whitney.

So it looks like the Capitals are just as bad as they were during the Oates days. They are one of the worst possession teams in the league, their PK is now complete garbage, and they are out of a playoff spot even though their roster is still pretty good. I don’t know what’s going on but it’s a little disappointing.

So is Quick’s thing now going to be charging way out of position at netfront forwards and then challenging interference when the puck goes into the wide open net?

Responding here because I just saw it now, but Quick did have an argument that yes, there was contact from an opposing player. That said, if he had made an attempt to move to his right I think the refs would have waved the goal off, but since he didn't even try, it counted.

This but include the Pens too.

The Pens have to trade the pick for a player demonstrably worse than a typical first rounder, too. Let's load up that Bottom 6 with punchmans and Tanner Glass...again.

What the Isles really need is a third goalie. Since the playoff series against the Caps, Halak has been awful against them, but I guess history deems you Must Play Halak Against the Caps.

I agree they are playing poorly, but they're still a .500 team and that's without their best defenseman and one of their Top 6 wingers. They're not a division winner this year, but they are still comfortably in a position to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Yeah I guess I was a little dramatic but they are playing some pretty brutal hockey right now (outshot 38-19 last night at home to the Islanders, thanks Halak for sucking). Niskanen and Burakovsky will help them when they return but even early in the season when no one was injured the team looked disjointed.

Flipside:
The Habs came out of last season hoping to build up scoring strength and shore up the bottom-6 of the d, the assumption being that doing so would allow them to capitalise on the "Division Leading" regular seasons they tend to put out.
The Oilers came out of last season hoping to bolster their lineup with some solid depth that would help them make serious runs at Stanley Cup success in the years to come.

At this stage of the season the Habs are 4-8-1 and the Oilers are 3-7-1.

Given as how the Pacific and Atlantic are garbage divisions you need around 100 points to be in with a realistic whiff of making the playoffs. The Habs need Ninety One loving Points from Sixty Nine (NOICE) Goddamned Games. They need to run a 108-point per season pace from here on out to be in with a whiff of making the playoffs. If you say 105 points to get one of the seats in the Atlantic, you're talking a 114 point over season pace.
The Oilers are in basically the same boat.

HAS and OAS aren't having meltdowns that are like "woe is me, our teams are bad", they're having meltdowns that are more like "we expected to be competing for rings and instead we're out of the race for the playoffs by November". And honestly, as far as "reasons for meltdowns" go that's a pretty loving decent one.

well good news: they're going to get to brutalize Boston tomorrow because the Bruins are even more injury-depleted than Washington and our roster was shittier to begin with. Maybe the confidence that comes with shelling Boston 7-1 or something will help propel them on a little hot streak.

Toews behind Malkin / Crosby probably would have been developed along the same lines as Staal. It would have been better obviously but I'm not sure it'd be that different. Remember that Staal was a very good hockey player. Toews would probably also have been traded away.

There's only so many points to go around.

Hey SAS dudes, in a couple weeks a few buddies and I are are going on a hockey road trip. We're stopping in Columbus to see the game against the Rangers, and then moving on to Nashville to see the game against the Avalanche the next night. We have our accommodations and tickets sorted out, but we have Saturday night after the game and then all day Sunday in Nashville and we have no idea what to do. Anybody have any suggestions for food, drink, or entertainment options?
