So I was wondering the other day if there were any games where a fielder played all nine innings without ever touching the ball (obviously ruling out the pitcher and catcher by default). I didn't really know how to look this up so I went straight to Anibal Sanchez's 17 strikeout game since fewer balls in play means better odds. As it turns out, in that game shortstop Jhonny Peralta never touched the ball on any play. He could have laid down on the field and taken a nap and nothing would have changed.

He did however get two hits and two walks. Now I'm wondering if there was ever a game where a position player never touched the ball defensively and had zero impact on offense.

Didn't see it mentioned before this topic got jello tuna pie'd, but...

Doesn't come close to the no offense side of things since he went 6-8 on the day with two HRs, but on 6/26/76 Toby Harrah played all 18 innings of a double header at SS without fielding a ball.

This is very much not true.

Edgar: .312/.418/.515, 147 OPS+, 68.3 bWAR in 8,674 PA
Ortiz: .286/.380/.552, 141 OPS+, 55.4 bWAR in 10,091 PA

Edgar was worth over a dozen WAR more despite ~1400 fewer PA.

Ortiz mashed dingers. That's where he's better.

Ortiz had more power. That's about the only thing he did better as far as I can tell.

His counting stats are higher, but Martinez didn't get regular playing time until he was 27. LOL Mariners even back then, I guess. (Though his pre age 27 numbers weren't that great, so who knows.)

Regardless. David Ortiz has jack poo poo to do with Edgar's HOF case. He's perhaps borderline at best due to the counting stats, but for God's sake pretty much his every rate stat is amazing.

Also, he made a light bat.

And whoa. As I realized that despite knowing that I'd seen him in lots of things - I couldn't name a single Paul Giamatti role off the top of my head - I go to check his wiki page. In his filmography section, there's a movie listed as in production.

Very very cool. I've read the book it's based on, and sight unseen - everyone should see this when it comes out. Read up on Moe Berg, then go find a copy of the book. It's a really great read.
