Fun Shoe

With the MLB season over, it seems a good time to distract everyone interested with fake text-based baseball!

League website

Goon player list

About the Game

Out of the Park is almost certainly the most detailed and accurate sports management sim (NOT GAME) out there right now. It is made by baseball nerds, for baseball nerds, with all of the absurd detail level you'd expect from a team of computer programmers who love baseball. Note: if you love baseball, or management-style games, or both, you should give it a try.

OOTP is a management game, not a playing game. Which means, ANYONE CAN PLAY IN THIS BE A PLAYER! All you guys will be doing is creating a player, and then watching him progress through his baseball career. I will run the sims and post the results. No other skills or knowledge needed!

What I suggest to everyone participating is that you follow your player and post interesting tidbits about him in the thread. I won't have time to comb through everyone; each update, I'll post a couple of interesting/funny/ridiculous things from the league, but it is up to YOU to keep us up to date about your guy. In hockles' awesome NHL threads some guys created fake twitter profiles for their guys which was both funny and good.

About Your Player

Remember I said OOTP is "detailed"? Well, it is really drat detailed. The talent/aging/growth mechanic is enormously complex and very unpredictable, just like real life...it isn't like lesser sports sims, where every player's development is pretty much linear and easy to project. Incredible prospects bust all the time, while guys come out of nowhere to become big league superstars. Performance and injuries matter, as does player development. This kind of randomness is why the game is so much fun, but it also makes it incredibly hard to predict what a player will do with his career. In other words, your guy might be a high school pitcher with a 97mph fastball and five great pitches, but if he goes to a poorly run team that overuses him in the minors and ruins his arm...sorry. You can always play in Mexico.

Like most such games, OOTP players have a current ability level, and a potential ability level. This is masked in the game; all of your information comes from "scouts", and is imperfect (at some times, maddeningly imperfect). I will use a random number generator to assign a base talent level for your guys. Some of you will have all-time great talent, some hall of fame, etc etc; I will ensure that all BAP guys initial potential ability level is at least that of a major league starter. How far they take that will be up to them, and fate (read: injuries). There will be a lot of variance, which is good, because there are a LOT of fun non ML options in this game!

Each of your players will start out as a prospect between the ages of 16 and 23. Entry to the majors follows real life: if you're from US/CA/PR, you'll go into the draft. If you're an international amateur free agent, you'll go into the international free agent pool. If you're playing in another professional league (Japan, Korea, Cuba, Mexico), you'll go through posting, or defect. I'll do my best to include everyone who signs up, as it isn't really that much work to put in a player. However, I'm going to have to limit the number of prospects I put in each year to roughly 15. Once your guy is in the game, he'll proceed through his career just like a real prospect: probably starting deep in the minors, riding the bus for years until he gets his shot.

After that, it is up to the game what happens. Some of you will have hall of fame careers, some will flame out in their teens. I'm going to include the complete minor league system along with several international leagues, so even if your guy doesn't make the majors, he can still have a long and colorful baseball career. I know having a LEGEND HALL OF FAMER is fun, but I almost think I'd prefer to follow a guy as he makes his way around various indy leagues and culminates as a KBO all star in his late 30s.

This is the info that I need to create your player. In your post, copy/paste this.

Name:
DOB: (no year needed)
Height/Weight: (note: weight is dynamic and will change over time, just ask 365 lbs Jason Heyward)
Throws/Bats:
Position: (can be one position, or multiple)
Country/City of birth: (note: try and make this align with your chosen background. eg, a high school prospect should be from US/Canada. A Japanese league player should be from Asia, probably)
Background: (choices: high school prospect, college prospect, international amateur, international professional. If international professional, include league you want to start in. Choices are: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Cuba, or Mexico)

Player profile: (this is where you'll need to editorialize a bit. Give me something to go on: a past player comparison, a general description, etc. Some things to consider: if a hitter, contact/discipline/power profile, speed, base stealing, fielding range and arm. If a pitcher: velocity, stamina, pitch arsenal. You can also include a personality profile if you want, and I'll do my best to model it in the game.)

You can build your guy however you want. If you want Bo Jackson power with Tony Gwynn discipline, that's fine. However, your talent level will determine exactly how much of those traits your guy will actually get, so he may well wind up a Bo Jackson/Tony Gwynn hybrid in the Pecos league. Which would, admittedly, be awesome.

Miscellaneous Crap

Some game settings stuff for those who care:
- Injuries on standard. Usually I put them on "high" as that is most accurate to real life, but I'll try and limit the injury holocaust to goon players.
- Development is standard, aging is slightly slower than default, so longer careers are more common (closer to real life)
- Inflation is between 2 and 4%...so after 20 years, we should see some hilariously big contracts

I will leave "dynamic league" on, which means teams will move, rules will change, and so on. I may also put RULE CHANGES to a vote in the thread. Perhaps we'll finally solve the DH conundrum?

League website is here, feel free to take a look at my most recent test run. If you're new to OOTP, click around see just HOW MUCH STUFF there really is here: news is fun to read, etc etc. The data on there currently won't be the actual league; I'll be restarting from the beginning of 2017. With each upload I'll include a special shortlist that has all goon players on it for quick reference. I apologize in advance for not having any pictures, but these uploads are huge and cutting the images saves me all-important time.

I'll do each year in three sims: opening day to ASG; ASG to WS, and WS to opening day. I'll try and do three sims per week, so roughly a year per week, but no promises.

One of the best in the league at calling for his pitchers with a wide range of knowledge about opposition batters. Hits okay. Smart, cool and collected but known to lose it and get thrown out if he's backing up a teammate or coach over an ump making bad calls.

Fielding range and arm are average-to-good.

Personality-wise, Rizwan (or Riz) usually is very level-headed and cool, but his temper can flare up over a bad call or a bobbled play.

He has great hand-eye coordination and plate discipline, though so he has risen through the high school and college ranks by slap hitting mostly singles and doubles with a ridiculously high on-base percentage (think Nori Aoki, but BA is 50-60 points higher). Background: Mystifying college prospect from SDSU

Player Profile: Basically Mariano Rivera, except instead of only throwing a cutter he only throws a mid 80's changeup. No other pitches, just a changeup. It's a phenomenal changeup though: scouts already grade it out as a 60 with 80 potential, it just seems to vanish when it reaches the plate and guys swing right through it. That said scouts are worried that he's stubbornly refused to learn any other pitches, so he's projected as a bullpen guy since they figured lineups might figure out the "I only throw one pitch" trick a second or third time through the order. Rough at fielding because he only throws changeups when throwing to the bases too, which makes things tricky. If by some miracle he is allowed to hit, will only ever try to drop down bunts regardless of who is or is not on base. This is because beneath the thin veneer of a pitcher lies the heart of a speedster, and he wants to show off his wheels.

Speed like a young Willie Mays, and a powerful, yet delicate swing so sweet it gives pitchers diabetes. Excellent baseball instincts including defensive prowess and batting eye. In short, the potential to become Mike Trout II: Trout Harder... if he can overcome his personal quirks.

First off, Lenny hates dealing with the press. He believes them to be very mean, because they ask too many questions that confuse him. Especially if they ask about something like reading, which a is dumb thing that is too hard. He enjoys crafts and would like to show you a hat he made out of a larger hat. Sometimes he has to be gently reminded to stop petting his fellow teammates so hard, and also to keep the baseballs out of his mouth. But on the whole, Lenny is a very nice boy who is generally very happy, and who enjoys baseball because it is fun and fun is fun.

There are rumors he may not have graduated high school on the most legitimate of terms.

Physically, Lennothy most resembles a young Steve Buscemi with the body of a college power forward.

Now I feel the need to stipulate that Moshe has an extreme over-the-top arm angle, like Jordan Montgomery.

Bad, very bad!
Name: Larry Leftball
DOB: 4/22
Height/Weight: 6'1", 240lb. Same as Bo but with all that weight in exactly the wrong places.
Throws/Bats: L/L
Position: Pitcher
Country/City of birth: San Francisco, CA
Background: college prospect

Player profile: Larry grew up idolizing post-40 Jamie Moyer and Bruce Chen. 'Fast'ball, cutter, sinker, change, curve, preferably all with good movement/control and little velocity.

(I don't know how OOTP handles pitch types, if having 5 pitches is going to nerf the hell out of him go Fastball, Change, Curve, Cutter, Sinker in that order with however many makes sense)

e: noticed the stamina bit, Larry can throw all day every day if you want him to.
