An insanely successful electronica musician. You've definitely heard his music a bunch without even meaning to. I think his album Play (1999, the same year he creeped on a teenaged Natalie Portman) had every single track licensed out to something.

[Inara] had this magic syringe. She would take this drug. And if she were, for instance, raped, the rapist would die a horrible death. The story was that she gets kidnapped by Reavers and when Mal finally got to the ship to save her from the Reavers, he gets on the Reaver ship and all the Reavers are dead. Which would suggest a kind of really bad assault. At the end of the episode, he comes in after she's been horribly brutalized, and he comes in and he gets down on his knee, and he takes her hand. And he treats her like a lady. And that's the kind of stuff that we wanted to do. It was very dark. And this was actually the first story that Joss pitched to me when he asked me to come work on the show. He said, 'These are the kind of stories we're going to do.'

I assume it hasn’t been mentioned because nobody here (including me) has heard of this guy before, but this dude Jason Mitchell was dropped a few days ago by his agency, his management company, and a Netflix movie and a TV show over sexual misconduct allegations.

https://deadline.com/2019/05/jason-mitchell-fired-uta-authentic-dropped-the-chi-desperados-misconduct-allegations-1202618811/

According to another article with more details, the misconduct in question is sexual harassment alleged by multiple actresses. One actress he worked opposite apparently went to the producers of the show multiple times to complain about Mitchell’s behavior, and resorted to having her fiance come to the set whenever she was filming with him to try and get him to back off. But he didn’t, and so she told the producers she could no longer work with him and quit. They let her quit rather than firing him. He’s fired now, but it tells you a lot about how these things continue to be treated in Hollywood.

NY Times posted:

Harvey Weinstein and his former studio’s board members have reached a tentative $44 million deal to resolve lawsuits filed by women who accused him of sexual misconduct and by the New York State attorney general, according to three people briefed on the matter.

The outcome of the settlement talks will be especially notable because the lawsuits are one of the main avenues by which Mr. Weinstein could be held responsible for his alleged actions.

He is facing criminal charges in New York for allegations of sexual violence against two women. But more than 80 women have accused him of wrongdoing, and many of those complaints involve sexual harassment, which is a civil violation, not a criminal one. So the details of any settlement — such as whether it includes an admission of wrongdoing by Mr. Weinstein — would carry significant symbolism.

quote:

Under the proposed terms of the new deal, about $30 million would go to a pool of plaintiffs that includes alleged victims, creditors of Mr. Weinstein’s former studio and some former employees, according to the people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agreement was private. The balance would go to legal fees for associates of Mr. Weinstein, including board members named as defendants in lawsuits.

Insurance policies would cover the $44 million if the current agreement is finalized.

Mr. Weinstein did not return calls for comment. A spokeswoman for the office of the New York State attorney general declined to comment. A lawyer for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Wall Street Journal was first to report the tentative deal.

You may remember Abdellatif Kechiche from the time he directed Blue is the Warmest Color and the stars went on record saying they never wanted to work with him again due to him being an exploitative abusive gently caress https://amp.theguardian.com/film/2013/sep/04/blue-is-the-warmest-colour-actors-director

Or from the time he was accused of sexual assault last June https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/oct/31/blue-is-the-warmest-colour-director-abdellatif-kechiche

The latest saga involves his newest film, where he pressured the actors to perform a near-15 minute scene of unsimulated oral https://www.indiewire.com/2019/05/mektoub-my-love-intermezzo-unsimulated-sex-alcohol-report-abdellatif-kechiche-1202144998/

quote:

In the scene in question, a man performs consensual oral sex on the character Ophélie. The Midi Libre posted an account Saturday morning from a person close to production who says that Kechiche had to push his actors to create that scene. A tweet translating part of the publication reads: ”Kechiche absolutely wanted a non-simulated sex scene, something the actors didn’t want to do. But by the way of insistence, and over time and with alcohol being regularly consumed, he managed to get what he wanted.”

According to (Le Figaro), "The director had the scenes of the disco replay for hours and hours, exhausting all the actors and the filming was prolonged very late at night, begins the informant of the local newspaper. He absolutely wanted to get to have a sex scene not simulated, which the actors were not willing. But as he insisted over the hours and while alcohol was regularly consumed on the spot, he managed to get what he wanted. “

It’s a disturbing report on many levels that would call into question the ethics of how the scene was shot and whether or not the actors were in any condition to consent to what was being asked. Furthermore, anyone on set could be seen as complicit if the account is true.

I assume, based off the other statements about him, because part of the appeal to him is having power to force people to do what he wants when they don't want to. The fact it was sexual was probably secondary to him over the fact it gave him power.

This should be treated like any other incident of a director using his power to pressure unwilling people into having sex, even in this case if the sex wasn’t with him, and be completely unacceptable. Screw “it was for the movie” or “it was for art” or any other excuse the guy might come up with; he pressured actors and actresses into performing sex acts.

If there was any justice then this combined with the other allegations ought to get him blacklisted, but I’m sure it won’t.

Even though it apparently didn't go as far as this, Harvey Weinstein infamously forced Selma Hayek to add a full frontal lesbian sex scene to Frida as payback for her rejecting his advances, so I'm guessing more of this kind of poo poo happens than we know about.

Fair enough, but also I think some posters here are right in assuming that this guy is getting off on this poo poo because of the abuse of power. It's probably a bigger thrill for him to coerce non-sex workers into hurting each other or performing sex acts on camera.

But yeah, that poo poo goes on in porn too and it's equally bad to do it there. The guy doesn't need a new line of work, he needs to be in jail or at least out-of-work.
