Yep. Newsrooms keep file photos of people to be used depending on the circumstances, and almost every famous person post-60 has their obit already written.

Definitely. It helps that during an average press event, a press photographer will take literally hundreds of photos which can then be filtered through and used accordingly depending on story and current perception of that person. The most dramatic example I can think of is Elizabeth Holmes: before the Theranos debacle photos of her made her look professional and charismatic (probably also provided by her):

Once the batshit insanity and fraud that was Theranos was revealed, the press started picking photos that made her look like a deranged psycho:

The 2011 and 2014 general elections in New Zealand are a great case study, where a compliant news media went out of their way to give disproportionate coverage to then-PM John Key on both occasions, while the little coverage they would deign to give the opposition leader was accompanied by deliberately selected unflattering images.

When it was reported that he'd spent about 6 months harassing a waitress in a cafe by pulling her hair and refusing to stop even when told to (while making comments with creepy sexual undertones), only a handful of outlets used maybe sort of unflattering photos of him, or no photos at all.

There isn't really any spin though? Elizabeth Holmes was a holy unqualified person to have anything besides a bad opinion on medical engineering and absolutely did not understand anything about science or development of medical technology. Even a cursory examination of her case reveals her to be 100% batshit bonkers and supremely greedy and evil. Her chief engineer killed himself when he realized that the machines hed been hired to make just couldn't work on the time table she demanded and he'd be responsible for hundreds of consumers deaths if it went to market. Then she threatened his widow with a lawsuit if she talked about it.

in my grandmother's journal.

She wrote very detailed descriptions of her experiences...
I mean it can't be a coincidence that tabloids always seem to just miraculously have photos on-hand that match whatever their headline is.

I'm sure they have databases of pictures with easily query-able tags like "feuding", "shocked", "victorious", "worried", "conniving," etc.

right, Holmes is a situation where it matches up nicely, but have you noticed that political rags will always have pictures of people they like looking clean-cut and professional, and people they don't going HURRR DURRRRRR at the camera? this doesn't really seem to match overall public perception, so much as it's a weird manipulation tactic on their part to make Their Guys look better and Not Their Guys look worse

(I'm not being specific because while I usually see it being done by right-wing sources, left-leaning ones are absolutely not immune to this)

Nice guess, but you did not dig deep enough to find the correct spin
https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2019/08/19/katy-perry-sexual-assault-retraction/

quote:

Kandelaki says the translation — and subsequent media firestorm — quickly recast her as a ‘victim’ who was ‘blaming Katy Perry’ for sexual assault. Both are far from the truth, Kandelaki insisted.

Quite to the contrary, she insists that her original comments were made in support of the actions of Perry. While she still says that Perry behaved in the manner described in the original report, she also says that the point she was trying to make in the original Russian article was that this behavior was no big deal and that Kloss was exaggerating Perry’s behavior for the purposes of hyping it.

Kandelaki also further attacked the #MeToo movement, which in recent years has exposed sexual harassment and abuse in both the entertainment industry and other industries in the United States.

But Kandelaki says that the movement is something that could only happen in the Western world. “I told a comedic episode from my life and, on the whole, I’m absolutely fine about it,” Kandelaki stated. “I’m certainly not suing anyone anyone and I wasn’t making an accusation.”

It’s was a handful of unsubstantiated claims that Rolling Stone spent a crap ton of money investigating before dropping it due to a total lack of any evidence whatsoever. They really wanted to break the story but exhaustive research revealed there was nothing to break.

As in, in this specific situation, it could’ve just been trolls.
