To be fair, it probably had more to do with the politics of Swiss police extraditing a French citizen for the US. It would have set a precedent that could screw over someone when it actually matters. I'm sure plenty of the names did it because they think he's cleared, but I bet that's why at least Costa-Gavras and Claude Lanzmann signed it.

Also, I read somewhere that Arthur Freed, MGM musicals producer, once exposed himself to Shirley Temple when she was a kid.

I think it's fair to say the vast majority of filmmakers didn't sign that petition because they're concerned about French/Swiss relations. Roman Polanski still gets standing ovations at industry shows and that whole incident was about him being picked up while he was on his way to be honored.

Eh, that's true.

Reminds me of when everyone sat on their hands for Elia Kazan and Leni Riefenstahl in the memorial thing, but Polanski got an ovation.

Also worth saying that Riefenstahl actually served some time in prison and regretted (somewhat) her involvement with the Nazis.

The more I read about her on Wikipedia, she comes off as a sociopath. Oh well.

This makes me think the stuff with Spacey is way, way worse than what's been reported so far.

I'd find Scorsese being a racist to be a bit unlikely given he's started multiple world cinema preservation/restoration programs.

There's probably not a lot of overlap between racists and world cinema cineastes.

Yeah... I don't know about this. It sounds like it could have been a legitimate misunderstanding. Franken would have to be just... incredibly stupid to do that, at a public event, while in office? And instead of saying something, with her husband right there, she just smiles? Eh... my brain hurts.

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on this one. The worst thing about this is that it's meant to stir up doubt in what victims say, which is beyond evil.

Anthony Bourdain is slowly turning into David Lynch.

Edit: And for all the drinking and drugging he did, Bourdain doesn't look half-bad for 60-something.

Looks more like he could play Ron Perlman's brother in a movie.

honestly this is legitimately going to be hairy as gently caress for film preservation regardless of what direction they go

like, I don't envy film historians 50 years from now; it seems like we've gotten insanely lucky that none of the stuff affected has been super important or anything, and it's just a ticking time bomb until the first legitimate Great Movie gets messed with because of this situation

The bigger problem is that the film industry has been so saturated in sexual assault and harassment, you'd lose nearly every great film out there. It's just something to accept that a lot of great art has been created by bad people. Moving forward, the best thing is to stop employing and enriching those who are keeping such a tradition from dying out. Firing actors and crew from productions is a good step.

Modifying finished work after being available for a while is insane, though. Leni Riefenstahl made a version of Olympia that removed all shots of Hitler and other Nazis. Except that's hiding the fact that the film originally had them.

Didn't that one director back in the '20s drown an entire village making a Noah's Ark silent and get away with it?

Michael Curtiz. Three extras drowned and dozens injured during the filming of a flood scene. Curtiz also directed The Charge of the Light Brigade, which had a couple hundred horses die during the making.

Am I reading things incorrectly or was his ex angry she wasn't invited to the Christopher Robin premiere even after the alleged abuse?
