All this also seems to be ignoring the more obvious reason that Louis is doing this because he doesn't want people to find out that he's still doing a mix of alt-right and "kids these days" jokes, after he got mocked for a few days last time. That's the reason for no notes.

If he was just worried about bootlegs or joke theft, YouTube copyright is probably more than capable.

Yeah, you guys are really over thinking it since it's just Louis C.K. for now. He doesn't want people reporting on his dumbass "kids these days" old man jokes or any alt-right poo poo he says after he got mocked last time. That's almost certainly it.

The issue of the sanctity of open mic night is a different issue that I don't think there's too much disagreement about. Other than the fact that comedians sometimes want to treat it as obnoxiously sacred, and not just a practice night.

It does. If you want to give a "report" on what topics you heard, you can do that from memory.

Not many people can memorize a lovely joke live, word for word, and then remember it for the length of the set and the drive home. He doesn't want quotes of his lovely jokes coming out. If he could make reporters/people sign NDAs he would.

I mean, I'm talking about the finished routine about how he wished the Stoneman Douglas kids would chill out and stop complaining and a bunch of old man poo poo. Did you miss all of that? There seems to be a straight line connecting them.

Also, we're talking about his regular shows in Toronto. Not an open mic night. Which again, is different. I hope he's not charging full price for 5 nights of unfinished material.

I wonder how much better off Louis C.K. would be now if his first film back didn't have a synopsis that read like a defense of Woody Allen. Skimming the plot, I know it's more complicated, but it wasn't a good look.

Since this is still going, apparently, I love the idea that since Louis' material is always evolving on tour and never finished, even when he's doing a series of heavily marketed shows, that we can never criticize it or the base concepts behind it. Louis on his deathbed will utter the final version of his act, and only then can we say "not great, I guess/I liked his earlier stuff." Nobody steal this concept before I get my spec script in to the Twilight Zone.

I've always wondered how we'd handle someone coming back into the fold. So far, most sex pests have either tried to ghost and come back or just double down, so "gently caress off" has worked just fine as a general strategy. I don't know that we've seen much in the way of genuine self-reflection, apology and comeback. I guess Dan Harmon would count (not sure what the general consensus is), but that case didn't seem to get as much press to start with, I don't think.

I'd be interested in a real count on how much he lost.

He's down for a half year or year of touring and some of the better venues are cut off, but I don't know how much cash is really in stand-up, compared to TV and movies. His movie basically got canned, but it wasn't exactly going to be a blockbuster. Missing his shot at high art hurts, but I don't think it's a given that I Love You, Daddy would be an award winner. I thought it hurt Horace and Pete, but it looks like I hosed up the date. He held onto some of his executive producer spots which I think still counts for some small piece of the action, even if he was practically cut off from production.

He lost some money but I imagine that if he can stabilize his tailspin for a minute with an alright set of shows Netflix will hand him a briefcase full of cash, if he wants it, and that seems to be where the big money is right now.

It brings up the problem we've seen with other offenders. Even if they're successfully "canceled" they still get to go home to their swimming pool of gold or maybe even get as many smaller side projects as they want the second no one is looking.

The article I found covering Dan Harmon's apology pointed out the additional insidious damage that the harassment also made Megan Ganz lose all faith in her writing ability for years since she assumed that she was just hired because he wanted to have sex with her. The damage runs so deep with this stuff.

If nothing else the mass deleting makes it pretty clear that he's got something to hide.

I hadn't seen the Bynes tweets before. I've seen several people, even goons, say that there's nothing wrong with asking for kids' feet pictures or having a weird focus on feet on his shows, and that we're the ones who are being sick by assuming its something twisted.

It's thankfully still just a fringe bit of awfulness, but the slow turn to try and line up Sandusky's abuse as a bunch of lies and recovered memories is stunning given how clear the case was. One of the times where reality just doesn't seem to matter to some people.

The Republicans figured out that if they just do a bad thing and power through it that there aren't any real consequences. There were a lot of random stories and anecdotes just kind of around. I know We Hate Movies had somebody write in about a month or so before that Twitter thread sharing a story of Goldblum being a creep to their 17-year-old (I think) sister after some event. Just nothing that really breaks the surface in this day and age. Mostly stories of Goldblum ogling young women and being openly horny. So, who knows if there's more . Nothing big or organized that I know of.

Although, I admit I lost the thread on the Depp case awhile ago, but wasn't it as simple as his side mostly being crickets and Heard just taking the narrative. I didn't follow it at the start and it's hard to tell now, but as soon as the tape came out most people pretty much flipped around on it and it's been fairly consistent from there. So yeah, a case of NDAs and lawyers settling it in Heard favor due to Depp's problems and her snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, I guess.

It's hard to say for sure, but one read on the situation is that the second movie was bad enough that the studio was able to force J.K. to let the main movies' big screenwriter join as a co-writer for 3. So the second movie and Rowling current reputation is spooking the studio at least.

But yeah, Rowling basically wrote Fantastic Beasts 2 as a very messy book and then just sort of awkwardly formatted it into a movie. The really, stupidly long flashback in the tombs in particular stands out as one of those big reveal chapters that wedges itself into a book right before the climax. Except it's a movie so, you know, it's just a bunch of characters awkwardly standing around for exposition. There's a lot like that, but that one in particular stands out. I saw it because my nieces wanted to see it and they liked the spectacle of it, but boy was it a mess.

As far Depp, it looks like his career might recover. I'd personally hope that he's getting himself sorted out, since the alcoholism (regardless of the cause/contributing factors) was also burning a lot of bridges and probably burning himself out hard. I don't know if you can trust the rumors from the set for the last Pirates movie, but I think they were ready to ditch him regardless if he was really showing up aggressively drunk every day.

It also feels like we're getting kind of straying from the point, since while I'm sure there were people calling for his head, the herd of cats seemed to mostly just want him to admit that he was being a creep and step away from trying to be a front and center male ally. The reason it stayed a story at all was that you had another self-proclaimed ally showing off his #TimesUp button in public, and then at best, treating women like poo poo in private.

The worst I remember toward "canceling" was a few people pointing out that his show would be super awkward now since it focused so much on dating (I have no idea if that's true, never really watched it).

There was also a push for more talking about affirmative consent, but that just got buried by all the people screaming that it was just a bad date.

If anything the big problem was a lot of people doing this dumb "Oh, so you want him jailed for life huh!" poo poo when most people just want the barest accountability. It's the same poo poo as in the Kavanaugh hearing. No, I don't want to ruin his life, I just don't think he should become literally one of the most important people in the country.

It does seem strange that Heard's sister recanting her testimony didn't sink the case, unless I'm missing something. Either the judge got a lot of information that didn't make it out to the public or he took a really weird stance on it. And yeah, I was wondering about the judgment since it's usually really easy to win a libel case in England.

The fairer comparison would be why hasn't the media covered scandals at Roosterteeth or Funhaus or one of the many other YouTube channels that had scandals and probably similar viewership. It's a smaller number of people who care and the people who care probably aren't reading much "mainstream" media anyway. It's easy to fire out an article bemoaning Netflix canceling another show, it takes work to put together an accusation. I don't know how big Patriot Act really got, personally it feels like it just came and went. The lack of details isn't helping either and there's not a clear point to jump in. If it was "just" a toxic workplace then it's going to be easy for people to just dismiss it as a stressful Hollywood environment and move on.

Ellen had details along with a long history of rumors about how terrible she was, even if it hadn't cracked the mainstream line. As soon as anyone cared to look all they had to do was find one of those long tweet threads where comedians took turns telling Ellen stories. Then you just keep digging.

And the fact that it's already been canceled doesn't help. When there's no real answer or punishment possible it tends to take the wind out of people's sails.

In a weirdly fitting thing I can't find a good writeup because it mostly broke through communities and Twitter, and since I was more of an occasional watcher too I'm not too sure. I just saw the fallout in the Youtuber thread here when it happened.

This was the best quick summary I could find without diving into a few Reddit threads. It's hard because it emerged from a 4Chan/8Chan thing.

https://www.kotaku.com.au/2020/10/adam-kovic-ryan-haywood-rooster-teeth-scandal/

Adam Kovic from Funhaus and Ryan Haywood from Roosterteeth had a bunch of nudes and files get leaked, which apparently feed into or verified some general rumor that Haywood was creeping on underaged fans. There were a few accusations, I think, although the main one said he thought she was 18. Either way not good to creep on fans and he got dumped pretty quickly. This has been a recurring problem with YouTubers so people are pretty ready to tell stars doing this to go away.

Kovic's was a lot fuzzier from what I remember. I'm not sure how much they wanted to dig either. Apparently his nude leaks included some bad pictures, like one of him jacking off on a coworker's keyboard, taking nudes and having sex at the office and seemingly taking pictures or a video of his partner without her knowledge. Plus once the knives were out a lot of stuff seemed to leak that he was genuinely a lovely, toxic person just in general.

It's a Daily Mail exclusive, apparently. Supposedly it is coming from Depp's lawyers. Daily Mail's reputation aside, I assume they wouldn't just make up the lawyers' saying it or forge their own documents. Might not be verified, but it is the latest turn.

So grain of salt, yada, yada, yada.

I'd also read the fourth exchange in the tweet as iffy although it's hard to tell with text.

"Will you give it to me tomorrow? Don't forget that you are mine"

"That topic...once again? It is very intense."

"I'm intense. I need your blood."

Kind of reads like he hassles them into playing along. I've heard of other relationships where some really lovely/outright abusive behavior gets hidden as just part of being kinky. Which just takes us back to the point where hopefully the shock of a celebrity into blood/maybe cannibalism stuff doesn't overshadow a look into whether he was actually being manipulative or abusive. Not exactly hopeful though, when you've got a literal if it bleeds it leads.

I didn't want to keep feeding the derail, but if you want to be mad about the school resource officer push, there was a resource officer at Columbine and it didn't really help since shockingly most school shootings don't start with the officer in a tactical position with his gun draw behind the shooter. Also unless the school's in the middle of nowhere it doesn't take too long to roll cop cars there, usually it'd be just as fast as the cop inside physically getting where he needs to be.

quote:

At 11:22 a.m., a custodian called Deputy Neil Gardner, the assigned resource officer to Columbine, on the school radio, requesting assistance in the senior parking lot. The only paved route took him around the school to the east and south on Pierce Street, where at 11:23 a.m., he heard on his police radio that a female was down, and assumed she had been struck by a car. While exiting his patrol car in the senior lot at 11:24, he heard another call on the school radio, "Neil, there's a shooter in the school."[90]

Harris, at the west entrance, immediately turned and fired ten shots from his carbine at Gardner, who was 60 yards (55 m) away.[90] As Harris reloaded his carbine, Gardner leaned over the top of his car and fired four rounds at Harris from his service pistol.[96][106] Harris ducked back behind the building, and Gardner momentarily believed that he had hit him. Harris then reemerged and fired at least four more rounds at Gardner (which missed and struck two parked cars), before retreating into the building. No one was hit during the exchange of gunfire.

I heard it mentioned offhand when people were talking about that trainwreck of a movie. The problem is that there's not much of a point to it. Awareness only matters if the targets or the potential future audience are capable of feeling shame. Given all the other dumb edgy stuff they did for the movie they'd probably love the "cancel culture" attention anyway.

On top of that, PornHub getting blacklisted by the credit card companies has also apparently been horrific for the independent models trying to hang on. Their pay-per-video site, ModelHub, was apparently way more popular than I would have guessed. Porn model twitter has all pretty much said that ModelHub basically being down cut their income in half. The loyal audience of people paying to watch a lady pop balloons or eat gummy bears can't pay for it through PornHub anymore and apparently just gave up rather than follow them anywhere else.

I think when it came up the last time, it was that Peewee just legit loved porn and collecting it. Bizarrely, it lent credence to the story that he wasn't even jacking off at the theater. That he really was just interested in experiencing porn on a big screen, because he just loved porn that much. But supposedly vintage porn basically gets sold as giant stacks of photos and cutouts, and then you go through it and sort it. When you're not collecting old playboys the record keeping gets way sketchier and you're almost certainly going to wind up with underage material. But yeah, they supposedly asked and the vendors he bought from swore he never asked for it.

I mostly remember it because of a standup comedian's joke from the time that came up. "They arrested Peewee at the theater. Now they've taken all his porn. Where IS he allowed to jack off?"

It's all tied together since it was a reaction to the rush of everyone jumping in front of one another to proclaim how big of a fan they were of Norm and what a wonderful person he was. This is also an annoying thing that happens when someone dies. Suddenly everyone was their biggest fan or closest friend.

I saw one of the women mentioned in this thread point out that they only voiced their experience because it was just too much to see days of people insisting that he was a wonderful person. And they co-signed that it was fine if people like his comedy and were going to miss him. He was pretty talented and funny. He just also did some bad poo poo and people excused him of it and that kind of sucks too.
