I apologize for derailing the thread with gamer poo poo, but yeah - Yahtzee has done multiple Let’s Play videos with IMC, and in 2014 when Gamergate went down, his parent company The Escapist posted a bunch of pro-GG articles, which caused a mass exodus of content contributors to the site including Jim Sterling, MovieBob, and Gavin Dunne. I’m not really a fan of any of those people, but those are the facts. Yahtzee was one of maybe two or three people to stay on the site. There’s a reason why.

It’s less accurate to say that “the people who believe x or y are the ones who commit sexual assault” and much more accurate to say “the vast majority of those who commit sexual assault are men, regardless of their political beliefs, because sexual assault is a power dynamic and right now men are the ones who hold the most power.” In other words, gently caress off to GBS with this stupid dogshit.

Jones was a local celebrity in Austin but not much known outside of it when he appeared in Linklater’s films, and also didn’t trend towards the right at all until he started getting bigger on a national scale. This is obvious news but for the sake of the thread’s chronicle I just thought it should be mentioned that Hollywood, who totally sympathizes and cares for the people speaking up for the #metoo movement, last night gave a “Best Picture” award to a film directed by a pederast who left production halfway through.

Sucrose posted:It’s an interesting dilemma. Do you punish everyone else who worked on the film by saying that it shouldn’t win awards? Would it be enough if Singer himself is locked out of the awards race? Or does the cast deserve some pushback, given that they willingly signed on to work with Singer, who has allegations against him going back decades? I would argue that a lot of behind-the-scenes people have to take whatever work they can and don’t really have a choice, but this decision of whether or not to award BH despite its director is made much easier by the fact that on top of all that it’s also an absurdly lovely movie.

Rhyno posted:Wait, what? So there’s these things on Twitter called block lists. You can subscribe to a block list and it will automatically block anyone new who gets added to that particular list for you, sometimes by automated means, sometimes curated. Make your own judgements on what it says about Twitter that this kind of feature is even necessary. Wil is of course a nerd, so he gets your typical heat from the nerd right-wing spheres - gamergate, comicsgate, sad puppies, whatever - and subscribed to one run by another social media star named Randi Harper. He promotes the block list to all of his fans, who are like “I would like to use Twitter without dealing with dickheads all day too” and sign up for the list. The problem is that Randi Harper really loving hates trans people. Full-on TERF all the way. Harper starts adding trans people to her blocker alongside the right-wing douchebags without telling anyone, but the trans community takes notice when a lot of nerd celebrities and a significant portion of Twitter are cut off from them. (And sadly, Twitter is such serious business that this actually impacted people’s careers, suddenly this means you’re blocked off from clients, commissions, and other business contacts.) People repeatedly point this out to Wheaton and he never responds. An alternative is made that accomplished the same purpose without hating trans people, Wheaton never follows up. The Hardwick poo poo happens. Wheaton says he’ll give a response once he’s done gathering his thoughts. Hardwick gets all his jobs back and faces no repercussions whatsoever, Wheaton says nothing forever. Wheaton eventually realizes even blocklists can’t make Twitter bearable and joins Mastodon, a decentralized left-leaning alternative to Twitter. Because it’s left-leaning, a lot of the trans community is on Mastodon. The trans community calls Wheaton out on his poo poo. Wheaton reports *pretty much every single person who says anything mean to him,* the admins at Mastodon see that one account is generating an unusual number of reports, and ban it. Wheaton writes a blog post about how everyone is too mean to each other on the internet so he needs to take a break from it, which is, I guess, the right conclusion reached for all the wrong reasons. I don’t think you have a responsibility to use your fame to champion major social causes. Fame is fleeting and most of the time uncontrollable. I do, however, think it’s worth poo poo-talking someone when they speak frequently about a certain issue while dancing around the part of the issue that’s inconvenient to them. I don’t hate Wheaton so much as I think he’s just a dumbass, but he inserted himself into this, so this is the bed he made.

Jared Leto’s dumb method acting gimmicks (which may not even be real) for performances that are on average merely serviceable are getting people riled up at an actor for being pretentious (perish the thought) which completely obscures the real issue, which is that he likes little girls. It’s such a brilliant ploy the only reason I don’t believe it’s intentional is because we’re talking about Jared Leto.

I think the pretty solid rule is just don’t make the punchline “and then someone got raped.” Like, that’s offensive because it’s a hot button issue about a crime that’s woefully underaddressed, but it’s also just lovely comedy. It’s not funny to have a joke that’s just “and then someone got murdered,” which is the reason I don’t read Ctrl+Alt+Del. It always bugs me when someone’s like “well you wouldn’t be so mad if someone made a murder joke” when if they told it in the way lovely rape jokes are told, yeah I absolutely would be, look at Joan Rivers ever talking about Palestine.Sodomy Hussein posted:oh lol was he not under arrest this whole time? Literally nobody is saying that the American prison system, or even that prison in particular, is hyper-competent and that suicide watch is a guarantee that you’ll catch every attempt a prisoner makes at taking their own life. What they are saying is that it’s pretty weird that Epstein was apparently put on the world’s shortest suicide watch shortly before he was meant to give testimonies that could incriminate a significant portion of the world’s most powerful people.
