Well, fuck. Really?

Small Town, Kansas. An unironically named town with a population of 55,000 three hours from Missouri and Arkansas, it's an the stereotypical midwestern town full of nothing. Small Town is host to three Wal-Marts and a Sam's Club, and proudly claims ownership of both a K-Mart and a Sears that cling desperately to life. Efforts have been made to rename the city to Smallton, primarily by the younger denizens of the city, but so far few have backed it.

It's also host to KSU, an academic entity that just narrowly edges out of being a community college and allows the residents of Small Town to claim it's a 'college town.' Among the businesses in Small Town (outside of the Wal-Marts) are numerous banks and churches, as well as a handful of payday loan buildings, Cash 4 Gold shops, and pawn shops, as well as various cupcake bakeries and a Chuck-e-Cheese's by the mall.

But the main attraction of Small Town, at least since spring of this year, has been the superheroes who have made their base on the outskirts of town in a scrap yard that has been abandoned since the late 80's, known simply as Sam's Junkyard. The former owner, a Sam Keenan, passed away in 1986 and some odd quirk of law left the land unclaimed. Now, however, it is the home base for the Great Plains Avengers, defenders of the lesser tristate area.

Take, for example, the current crime in progress...

Downtown Small Town, 3 PM CST
A Legitimate Business

The form of a man comes crashing through the front window of the shop, propelled by a red beam of energy. The man hits the pavement with a grunt, skidding slightly before coming to rest against the pick up truck idling on the curb before him. The driver jumps, honking his horn twice; a smaller sedan comes from around the corner and pulls up just behind the truck. A moment later, the bell above the door tinkles as they open.

Several men in ski-masks emerge from the shop, glancing around warily; each holds a white plastic bag with a yellow smiley face on it, bulging with gold and silver jewelery. They start tossing the loot into the back of the truck, and turn to head back in for more. Finally, their leader emerges, a man garbed in a very cheap looking pirate costume.

"Get the booty upon our vessel, lads! We're ta ship off before them blasted privateers arrive!" The man's voice is thick with a midwestern accent, and as he speaks the spirit glue holding his felt beard on loosens. He mashes it back on with his fingers with an irritated look on his face. "A curse upon the Hobby Lobby for this cheap glue!"

Mercifully, the silent alarm had been pressed several minutes ago, and the Great Plains Avengers are arriving on scene any moment. They will recognize the pirate as Goldbeard the Dreadful, a mutant capable of launching concussive blasts of energy from his mouth, and a man with an odd obsession for pirates..

Welcome to MHR! Please post your character sheet in your first post. You guys have the initiative, so feel free to make your entrance and stop this robbery.

Currently, there is Goldbeard, and approximately five of his thugs, not counting the escape driver.

after a great meal i like to lie on the ground and feel like garbage

The Marvelous Missus Congeniality!

It's a beautiful day in scenic Small Town, Kansas, and Eve Stehlen was busying herself with the weekly shopping. Between her cooking hearty Midwestern-sized meals and the fact that she was cooking for quite a group these days, this was a feat that was currently taking up the better part of two shopping carts and threatening to expand to a third. For most midwestern housewives, this would be a truly herculean effort. But Eve Stehlen was no simple homemaker. No, she was also one of the tri-state area's mightiest superheroes!

So when the call came down that Goldbeard and his goons were knocking over (another) completely legitimate business, well, it was just another day in the life of the marvelous Missus Congeniality! Eve stowed her carts with one of the cashiers, promised that she'd be right back, and got a little hustle on to make it downtown!

---

Moments later...

Missus Congeniality, cloaked in organic steel, charged in and picked up the getaway van with her prodigious strength! She waved it back and forth at the assorted criminals and their piratical leaders, exclaiming in the most mom-like of voices, "Whoah dere! Doncha know it ent right to steal from a perfectly legitimate business like dat? I ent yer mam, but iffen ya need a spankin' to learn yer lesson... A spankin' yer gonna be gettin'. So whatcha say? Are ya gonna leave it go or what?"

Well, fuck. Really?
DOOM POOL: 1d6. 1d8 after this action

The Mateys yelp out in surprise when their boss' getaway vehicle is hefted into the air without so much as a concern by a metal mom. Her stern lecture seems to hit home with most of the thugs, who glance to Goldbeard briefly before looking back up the street to see if they have a clear avenue of escape. Of the five, two drop their weapons and sprint up the street, hoping to put distance between themselves and Missus Congeniality. Goldbeard, however, is a hardened criminal, and is less motivated by the maternal speech. "Do ye ferget yerself, wench?! We're bloody pirates! Pirates ain't got no time fer their mums!" He tries to grin crookedly, but a lifetime of proper dental hygiene prevents him from looking too piratical.

Wisps of red begin to filter through his clenched teeth, however, and for a moment Goldbeard's throat bulges with a terrible red glow. The would-be pirate takes in a deep breath through his nose as he reels back, before thrusting himself forward, his mouth unhinging as a beam of brilliant red hurtles forth from his gaping maw. The beam is more focused than the one that had launched the owner of CA$H 4 GOLD into the street, and is likely to be more painful even for the Metal Mom!

Okay, posted reactions and I took the next initiative slot mostly so I can use this for teaching combat to those unfamiliar.

As a mob character, the Mateys have multiple dice that must be taken out before the mob is considered defeated. However, each stress die applied to them is stepped up by further stress die, so they can't have multiples of the the same kinds of stress; as such, once the number of 'sides' of dice outnumber one of the affiliation dice, one of the die is defeated. So they're at 3d8 right now with no stress.

Goldbeard, however, was able to defend against the attack and currently has no stress. In this game, initiative is chosen by the player currently acting; in this case, Tricky would have announced a preference for a hero or villain, but since I know this is the first MHR game for a lot of people, I went ahead and took the slot for Goldbeard.

At this point, Momlossus will have to build a reaction pool similar to how she initially attacked; if she beats the 15, she doesn't take the stress. She can also activate the opportunity from his reaction to temporarily shut down his powers through his limit, Exhausted. She is also capable of counter-attacking with her effect die if she spends a PP on the roll, which would inflict her effect die automatically as stress on Goldbeard.

Mateys Reaction (5d8 Team, 1d8 We're Pirates? Distinction): 6d8 30
6 + 7 = 13, d8 effect die

Goldbeard Reaction (1d10 Team, 1d8 The Dread Pirate Distinction, 1d8 Enhanced Stamina, 1d8 Menace Master): 1d10+3d8 19
Opportunity for the PCs. Goldbeard has the Exhausted limit, so his powers can be shut down temporarily if the next player wants to activate this; however, in doing so, I do get another d6 to my doom pool.
8+8 = 16, d8 effect die.

Goldbeard Attack (1d10 Team, 2d10 Force Blast, 1d8 The Dread Pirate Distinction, 1d8 Combat Expert): 3d10+2d8 26
Using a special effect to double Force Blast; highest die is ignored, and I use 3 for my roll.
6+5+4 = 15, d8 effect die, inflicting physical stress with an energy attack.

Hero goes next.

Faultline (formerly G-Bomb)
Roger Malcolm Holden [Public]

Roger was spending his day like he spends most of them since joining the Great Plains Avengers, helping get Sam's Junkyard in order. A stack of cars means nothing when you can disable gravity in a few square mile radius and grow in size. If the junkyard was to be home, they'd have to expect an attack sometime. Walls made of garbage won't stop much, but it is better than nothing.

When the alarm goes off Roger quickly runs to the double wide that acts as an office of the junkyard, and looks at the way too new and high tech terminal to see the police scanner showing that Goldbeard was at it again. Roger hops in a later model Chevy Cavalier and makes his way toward downtown Small Town.

When Faultline arrives on the scene, he sees that Miss Congeniality is on the scene, and already berating the sad looking crew. Faultline sees the bags of heavy, gold loot, and gets an idea. He holds out his hand and focuses on the area around the mateys. "That gold looks heavy fellas. Would be a shame if they got heavier!" Faultline focuses on the loot bags, and causing their gravitational footprint to increase in size significantly.

Okay, going to try and create a complication. d10 team affiliation die+d8 Grocery Bags Full of Metal+d10 element control+d10 Menace master +3d6 area attack on the mateys, Joe, and Goldbeard, if I am doing that right is a pool of 3d10+d8+3d6

Okay, so that is a total of 18. One d10 is set aside as an opportunity. So that is a d8 Heavier gold Complication on Goldbeard, and three d6 opportunities on the mateys. If for some reason I can't do an area attack complication like this, then assume I just targeted goldbeard, since my total, effect, and one opportunity for them didn't come from the area effect dice.

I nominate the Mateys to go next.

DOOM POOL: 1d6

Faultline's appearance certainly doesn't spell anything good for Goldbeard and the Mateys; his powers suddenly increase the downward gravitational pull of the bags, and immediately two of the Mateys hit the ground and crack their jaws on the pavement from the surprise attack. The remaining Matey, however, is able to hold his ground, struggling for a moment against the increased weight of the bag. Goldbeard's solution is to simply let go of the bags, causing them to hit the ground with enough force to crack the pavement.

However, whether it be that he's simply rusty or something has resonated with Goldbeard, Faultline finds his own powers turning against him; he suddenly feels gravity increase by multitudes on his body, causing him to stoop and struggle to even remain standing. The road beneath him buckles slightly as the power radiates out from him, and he looks up as the last of the Mateys decides to take advantage of this distraction; the final thug brings the bag of jewelry and coins down in a Hail Mary swing, the malfunctioning powers of the gravitational guru lending more force behind the attack than would be normal.

Okay! Complications are basically just another form of stress but can only be enhanced by the same complication; anyone can use a complication against the person using it as basically a free bonus die.

We're going ahead and activating a limit here, which will weaken Faultline a fair bit and make him easier for our piddly little thug to hit. Since the power is now a complication due to his limit, he can't actually use it to defend himself now. He can activate an opportunity or test against the doom pool (or have someone aide him) to remove the complication. With the doom pool being a lone d6 right now, thaaat's not gonna be too hard.

Also, the doom pool is the Watcher's version of Plot Points, and I can spend them to add more dice to my roll and add extra effect dice, just like y'all can with PP.

Toad/Mortimer Toynbee

Toad was only a few blocks away when the call came in, but he was also mid-hotdog. He looks at it ruefully, then sighs and swallows the rest of it whole. Apparently being a hero meant never getting to savor the finer things in life. A few minutes of bounding across rooftops ends with him crouching on the rooftop of CA$H 4 GOLD, just in time to see Faultline's powers go awry. His heart drops a few feet; if Rog couldn't get that under control, this would get bad, real bad. He needed to eliminate anything that could distract him, and that meant... the pirate? Oh, right, this idiot, Gumbeard the Doubtful or something like that. They'd mentioned this guy when the team had moved in, but Toad hadn't really clicked on how stupid the idea was until he saw the guy dressed up in pantaloons in the state that was about as far from a large body of water as you could get.

"A pirate? Really? There's not even a pond around here, you idiot!"

He turns his head left, then whips it right, launching his tongue in a curving arc to wrap it around Goldbeard. If he could use the advantage of height to drag this idiot off his feet and leave him hanging upside down, then hopefully he couldn't do something stupid to Faultline and set off a gravitational disaster. He'd already done that laser thing twice, and that had to be rough on the old metabolism, right? All that energy had to come from somewhere.

Well, fuck. Really?
Doom Pool: EMPTY

Goldbeard is completely caught off guard by Toad's attack from above, and looks down in horror and disgust as the mutant's tongue wraps around his body. The mutant opens his mouth to give Toad a taste of his own medicine, but can only conjure up wisps of red steam. His footing shifts as Toad tries to reel the pirate into the air, and Goldbeard panics, grabbing hold of the tongue and pulling at it with all of his might.

However, the mutant's appendage is incredibly slimy and rubbery, and his efforts are initially in vain. With a frustrated growl, he yanks hard on the tongue and rotates his wrists, gathering up as much of the tongue around each hand as he can before yanking down as hard as he can, trying to dismount the mutant. As he puts strain on the tongue, he glances around in panic before doing the only thing left for him to do.

The pirate bites down as hard as he can on the mutant's tongue. Regret immediately fills Goldbeard's face, but the sudden pain and bit of bleeding does its job, and the tongues loosen enough for Goldbeard to shake free. When he speaks, he forgets his piratical accent, trying his hardest not to barf. "That is so disgusting, man! Ugh! Just.. ugh!" He spits, rubbing his hands on his blouse before scraping at his tongue with his fingernails. The wound he inflicted on Toad is minor, but incredibly annoying, and is preventing the former member of the Brotherhood from using his tongue properly.

Sam, the Junkyard Gerbil
1>0 PP, 0 XP

Sam was helping Faultline in tidying up the junkyard, although he was focused more on setting up living areas instead of defenses. But when the alarm sounded, Sam was quick to rush over to the CA$H 4 GOLD, forgetting that the team actually has a car. So he arrived a little late and a bit short of breath, but he wouldn't let that keep him down. It's time to be a Hero! Which, in Sam's mind, means doing a flashy jump off of a car as he hurls some chains (he made sure to remove the rust beforehand, he's not cruel) he fashioned into a bola straight towards the legs of the last "matey" with any desire to fight. Hopefully with Sam and Toad keeping the last two villains busy, Faultline will be able to calm himself down. There's not really a plan B if that doesn't work.

The Matey grins to himself as he actually, actually lands a blow on a superhero, one that has made the news even, and he steps back a moment to soak it all in and gloat. This moment doesn't last long, however, as a three foot tall gerbil leaps over the car Faultline had driven in and hurls a bola made of old bike chains. The thug is caught completely off guard and the chains wrap around him quickly, the weighted ends throwing his balance off as he falls backwards onto the ground.

He still grins, however, at having whalloped some cape with a bag of individually wrapped collector coins. Goldbeard seems to have finallly caught his breath, and he frowns as he glances at the four heroes. Given the chance he might still be able to take one or two of them down, so long as it stays four to one.

This sucked. Being forced to spend all her days in this grotty little junkyard. She couldn't even go anywhere or talk to anyone interesting because of her drat parole. Still only another 998 hours of this to go and then she'd be free to go back to doing... well something. Although how free she'd be when her so called friends wanted nothing to do with her and her face had now been splashed all over the local news remained to be seen. She was almost grateful when the police scanner came up with news of a major crime in progress. Well major for Kansas anyway. She hit the alarm button and waited for the rest of the team. "Supposedly Goldbeard is up to his usual tricks. We might want to stop him or something. I guess?" she added. She watched as Faultine ran for the car and jumped in "Hey wait for--" she added as he sped off. "me" drat it. Rushing outside she flagged down a taxi and headed for downtown.

---------

Emma swore as the taxi finally pulled up. Traffic was horrendous today and she'd been sure she'd missed the whole thing. Tossing a 20 at the driver she jumped out of the cab and ran for the cash for gold shop. Seeing the downed pirates, she swore again only to feel ever so slightly guilty as Miss Congeniality gave her what could only be described as an old-fashioned look before turning to Goldbeard and having a double take. "That's the lamest costume I've ever seen. Here let me get rid of it for you." She said summoning up a small ball of flame and tossing it at the would be pirate...

DOOM POOL: 3d6

Kindling's flames ignite the cheap polyester/cotton blend of Goldbeard's costume, and for a brief moment it looks like the pyromaniac might have one up on the criminal. But Goldbeard is a tricky one, and has survived scraps in Small Town and beyond for some time. Instead of panicking, the pirate takes in a deep breath and quickly exhales, a torrent of concussive energy washing down the front of his shirt; he slaps at his sleeves and shoulders as he uses the force of his mutant power to batter the flames away.

Toad yelps and withdraws his tongue. "He bit me! I don't believe it! Nobody's ever done that before."

A thought strikes him and his expression of hurt and surprise turns into a devilish smile. He snickers and just sits down calmly on the edge of the roof, feet dangling.

"Yeeaaaah, nobody's ever been that dumb before. You uh, you feelin' any dryness in the mouth, friend? That's usually how it starts. Then the colors get a little sharper, and then it gets weird. You feeling a little funny yet, Captain Hook? Any ticking crocodiles or flying children about?"

The Dread Pirate Goldbeard steps back, looking at his hands for a minute before glancing back up to Toad. "Aye.. aye.. I am seein' somethin'.. it's.. it's a bird, lad!" He raises both hands, extending the middle finger in a crude gesture towards the hideous mutant on top of the shop. "Two of 'em, even! Would ya look at that, sonny jim! It's magic, it is!" His mocking grin fades. "I'm a bloody pirate, did ye really think some sorta crazy brain drug was goin' to work on me? Yer even dumber than I thought ye'd be, ya uncircumcised penis lookin' son of a whore!"

Goldbeard plants his hands on his hips and throws his head back in laughter, before clenching his fists in front of him, causing the knuckles to crack. "We'll show you how it's done on the high seas, lad. Do ye know what happens tae a toad when it's hit with a blast o' concussive energy from the likes o' me? Let's find out." Goldbeard takes a deep breath and slams his elbows backwards as he exhales, producing a massive surge of energy that widens as it gets further from his mouth; it's likely that even if Toad dodges, the roof of the CA$H FOR GOLD shop isn't going to make it out for the better in this scenario.

Activating the opportunity to up a d6 to a d8, and spending that d8 to add another die from my roll to my pool. Also spending a d6 to interrupt and take that sweet, sweet initiative spot so Goldbeard can blast Toad. Missus Congeniality, with surprising speed, sprints between Toad and the apocalyptic death laser. She cracks her neck back and forth, then punches the oncoming flood of energy! Wouldn't want anything bad to happen to one ov you boys, doncha know, so let me handle this!"

The laser breath batters and bruises the marvelous midwestern mother, but she manages to weather the blow... somehow. Her costume is singed and smoking, her hair looking a little frazzled, but neither the shop nor her teammate are any worse for wear.

Faultline (formerly G-Bomb)
Roger Malcolm Holden [Public]

Faultline watches the fight go on around him while he struggles from his own localized gravity bubble. He had to remain calm and not panic. His powers worked in opposites. Detect micro changes in gravity to sense people, change gravity to mess with them. Absorb gravity to increase mass and size, release gravity in a burst to release mass and shrink. Everything had a ying and a yang with his powers. Maybe that was the answer? Try to absorb the gravity around him and grow his size? That'd just make him a target, best to let the Iron Lady take the blows for now.

"Come on Roger, you're a literal master of gravity..." he whispers to himself as he focuses on the gravity field around him, trying his best to stabilize it and bring nature, and his body, back into gravitational balance.

Well, fuck. Really?
For a moment, Roger feels the gravitational field surrounding him fluctuating violently, fighting against his control at every step. But even Magneto knew that Holden commanded a power that rivaled his own over magnetism, and as it was with Erik, Roger shows great power and control over gravity.

Moments pass, and Roger feels the load on his body lighten. The field around him is absorbed and redirected, no longer weighing the mutant down. Before too long, he is completely back to normal.

Doom Pool Defending vs Faultline (2d6 + 1d10): 2d6+1d10 15
That's two opportunities so far for the heroes. A roll of 9 with a d6 effect die is totally useless so the complication is gone!

Kindling or Sam are up. Note: you can use PP to add dice to your pool for a bigger total! You reset to 1 PP at the end of every action scene (unless you spend XP otherwise) so might as well put Goldbeard down.

Sam the Junkyard Gerbil
2>1 PP, 0>1 XP

When Goldbeard extends his fingers and laughs at Toad, Sam stared blankly. "...I don't get it. What does he mean by 'two birds'?" Oh wait, right, still in the middle of heroing, questions can wait until after the fight. While the pirate is focused on Ms. Congeniality, Sam rushes forward, grabbing a handful of bits and bobs from his backpack and tossing them at Goldbeard's face. Hopefully that would distract the man from Sam's real attack: a stun prod created from some pieces of metal, multiple used batteries, and some wire, duct taped together. Sam's pretty sure he's got the voltage low enough not to cause any serious harm...

______________________
Gained 1 XP from my milestone.

Spending a PP and activating one of Dyne's opportunities to create a d10 stunt representing a jury-rigged, one-shot stun prod. Could have made it a d6 resource, but I'm hoping we take this pirate down before Sam gets another action.

Getting in close and zapping Goldbeard with a stun prod: Team d10+New At This Hero-Thing d4+Reflexes d8+Junkyard Weaponry 2d8+Combat Expert 2d6+Jury-Rigged Stun Prod d10, using my Fling Scrap Metal SFX to double Junkyard Weaponry and gaining a PP for using a distinction as a d4.

Total is 22, d10 Effect. My SFX removes the highest rolling die (a 10) and let me take three dice for my total, and I took Dyne's suggestion and spent a PP to add another 4. No opportunities somehow.

Also, PP's carry over between scenes, they only reset to 1 at the beginning of each Act. You can spend XP to increase your minimum amount of PP's you start each session with, but a "session" is a bit hard to define for a PbP game, and it's not a very good use of XP anyways.

Goldbeard turns at the sound of the oncoming gerbil, and for a moment is dumbfounded. "Is that a giant rat?" A moment later, he has a face full of nuts and bolts and is frantically flailing his hands to ward off any further handfuls of metal. The distraction is sufficient enough, as Sam is able to close in and jam the cattle prod directly into Goldbeard's gut, triggering it. For a moment, nothing seems to happen, and Goldbeard glowers down at the miniscule mutant, until Sam remembers to give the battery pack on the side a good whallop.

The effect is instantaneous; the batteries discharge their remaining loads quickly, and Goldbeard cries out in pain and instinctively curls up on himself, falling backwards as he convulses slightly and yells out words not fit for public consumption. Smoke trails from the front of his manly blouse and he hisses as he starts to right himself, touching the burn on his gut; a hole has been seared through his costume by the sudden electrical discharge, and he certainly looks non-too happy with Sam.

Goldbeard Reaction (1d8 Solo + 1d8 Dread Pirate Distinction + 1d8 Stamina + 2d6 Combat Expert): 3d8+2d6 24
Even if I spent both doom pool dice on this, I would not be able to beat 22. I'm going to take a 13 for my roll and a d8 as my effect die, and since Sam beats me by over 5, the d10 steps up to a d12.

drat those cheap polyester costumes! All because some kid got themselves injured by a Jack-o-Lantern one Halloween they just had to make them fireproof didn't they? Which meant that the pathetic pirate had time to deal with his pesky pyro problem. Still there had to be something she could do to help as she watched Goldbeard fall to the floor as the giant rodent stabbed him with what looked like some sort of weird lightning rod thing. Where the hell did he get a cool toy like that? she wondered to herself before focusing on the matter at hand. Hmm maybe if she focused her heat powers just right she could warm up the air around the pirate and loosen the glue on that pathetic moustache and beard combo he was wearing. She'd have to be careful though so as not to accidentally set fire to him, sure he was a criminal but he didn't deserve to be incinerated. But just think how humiliated he'd be without facial hair! No one would follow a pirate called No-Beard!

Well, fuck. Really?
Goldbeard's entire costume had been made to standards set forth by the US federal government regarding flammability and flame retardancy. The mix of synthetic and natural fabrics and other additives had made the clothing very difficult to ignite, for the safety of idiot Halloween goers everywhere in whatever capers they got up to. His bandana, his onesie, everything was American made and safe as safe could be.

His beard, however, was an import, made of the cheapest materials that could be found first, bought second. In a matter of seconds from Kindling's focus, Goldbeard's head becomes engulfed in a fireball sparked from his cheap fake beard, and it takes him a moment to even realize what has happened. He screams out suddenly and reaches up to rip the beard off, throwing it on the ground and staggering away from it. His hair, by now, has caught as well, underneath the bandana, and he slaps the top of his head rapidly to try to extinguish the flames.

Eve, unable to let a poor man suffer like that, steps forward quickly and grabs his shoulder, spinning him around to face her. She gives a tremendous clap of her hands, sending forth a shockwave of air and sonic force that quickly extinguishes the flames and causes the pirate's cheeks to puff out comically. For a moment, Goldbeard simply teeters on his feet, before collapsing forward in a heap on the ground, groaning. His face appears to be fine with only slight reddening, though a hospital visit will be necessary, just in case.

The owner of the CA$H 4 GOLD shop wriggles in his bonds near the still idling truck, where it seems the driver has made a break for it and some point during the fight.

Roger rubs his jaw from where the damned Matey had clobbered him. He closes his eyes, and tries to focus on manipulating his flesh. Gravity was like this never ending energy source just welling up from the ground, and not only could Roger manipulate it, he could absorb it to make himself bigger. Something about energy and mass and Einstein's formulas. However, all that growing also causes cells to work by growing, multiplying, and shrinking. Roger had found over the years that by rapidly causing himself to grow and shrink, cells would multiply, and upon the shrinking, the most injured of cells would go away. Now Roger couldn't use this to heal himself like Wolverine in the middle of a fight, but in quiet times like this, he could heal himself.

Roger holds his hand up to his chin to block out the ridiculous sight of his chin growing rapidly to Jay Leno sizes, then shrinking to normal, and all over again about half a dozen times. After his jaw feels better, Roger steps up behind Kindling crossing his arms and staring at Mrs. C. "Alright now Mrs. C, that's enough. Don't act like with that metal body of yours you ain't ever hit someone harder that what you expected. Each of us here is a mutant, and each of us has had our fair, or unfair, share of power misuses."

He then stares up at Kindling, the girl a hair taller than Roger. "Now don't go being overly dramatic. You feel bad about what you did? Don't mope. Once we get back to the junkyard, I want you spending two hours practicing with your power. Place a pot with some water on a car door or something, and work on heating that door up just enough to get the water boiling. Only way to ever control your power is constant practice."

For recovery attempting to use team 1d10+1d10 Don't be fooled by size, +1d10 growth to represent Roger absorbing gravity to increase mass to heal or something? If I can just increase my mass via gravity, i would think maybe it could mend a little?

The shop owner is quiet as Toad works at his bonds, before turning and expelling the contents of his stomach onto the mutant's shoes. He groans and leans his head back against the car, muttering a half-hearted apology. "S'like I was hit with a bag full of ten bags of bricks. Christ." Once freed, he shakily gets to his feet, leaning against the truck with his head low.

"Thanks, you lot. Ugh. You guys do good work." He finally raises his head, spying the damage to the top of his building, and the man cries out. "Oh f'gently caress's sake!" He looks at the gathered heroes for a moment, his eyes narrowed, before he turns and kicks Goldbeard right in the stomach, almost incoherent in his rage and frustration. "MY INSURANCE" is the only thing he can choke out before slumping back against the truck.

With Goldbeard tied up neat and clean for the cops and the sound of sirens closing in, there's little left to do but pile back into Faultline's Chevy and head back to base, with Toad and Kindling taking the back seat for being the smallest of the crew and the two most likely to fit around the car seat installed for Sam's safety.

Everyone recovers since the doom pool is wimpy enough that none of you could fail, and everyone gains 1 extra XP for a job well done. You'll be entering a transition scene so any resources or what not you want to create or work on can be done now, before we move on.

He snickers, but he's only half-kidding. Somebody had to stop the demented laser-spitting land pirates of the world. It wasn't about fighting the really scary threats, it was about doing your best to keep people safe, no matter your ability level. Who cared if you made the headlines?

Sam, the Junkyard Gerbil
1>0 PP, 2 XP

Sam had spent the ride home in silence. Not because the pirate had called him a rat (well, maybe a little bit), but because he was trying to think of a way to help Kindling control her powers. It's not like he was a world-class genius with his own lab or anything, but there was probably a way to use the junkyard in this situation, right? Actually, Toad did mention Cyclops earlier...

Back to his usual hyper self, Sam leaps out of the truck once they get back home, and starts to comb the junkyard. "No, not that part. Eh, this could work, but it's a little rusty. That one's too heavy..." Once he finally had the needed parts, Sam retreated into his workshop (which was really just a shack off to the side) and got to work. A couple hours later, and a triumphant Sam rushes over to Kindling, carrying his new invention. "So, you know how cyclops can't control his optic blasts without his visor? I built something that works similar to that, although it'll have to be replaced every so often. It's like a vent that you wear like a gauntlet and lets you adjust how much fire can come out! It should help give you an idea of how much you should push yourself for a given situation, until you don't need it anymore. Also, we can paint it if you think it's ugly, but someone else will have to buy the paints because I don't have any money. So, what do you think?"

Spending a PP to create a Training Vent d6 resource based off of my Tech Expert specialty. It's not much, but more dice means less chance of running out of dice to use because of 1's. Ferrosol can change the name if they have something better.

Eve was likewise largely silent on the way back to their base, though her silence stemmed mostly from contemplating what sort of hot dish to cook the team. Maybe a touch from having to bite her tongue and not tell Faultline to his face that, no, she hadn't hurt someone. Unlike certain members of the team. He seemed a little tender about it and, for all that his comment hurt, it wasn't like he wasn't trying to make up for it. It was clear that the team had some kinks to work out still, but nothing brought a group together faster than a good meal. So while Sam bustled around with his techy gadget things, Eve started cooking up a storm.

Soon enough, the smell of a delicious and, indeed, award-winning hot dish permeated every square inch of the base. As she finished setting the table, Eve took a deep breath and bellowed, "FOOD'S READY, C'MON AND EAT!"

Back at the Junkyard, Roger kicks back for a bit and relaxes in one of the doublewides that count as the offices of the junkyard. Each of the Great Plains Avengers had their own little part of the junkyard to call their own. Sam had his shack off in a corner, while Roger did put a bunk and his belongings in the small guardhouse at the entrance. Even then, he spends most of his time in the main office, as that was the location of all the fancy equipment they were given. Roger figured someone should be here to answer all the fancy Avengers tech if they should ever get the call.

Relaxing with the others, Roger turns to Mortimer. "It might not be glamorous work, but I'll take fighting old Dread Pirate Lazerface over any of the poo poo I've done in the past. Guy might have been a bit of a joke, but his power sure wasn't. Even someone like him did a lot of damage to that store, and impacted the owner's life and business, not to mention traumatize him." Roger stares off into the distance for a minute before continuing, his eyes downcast. "I did a lot worse than that when working with the Brotherhood; we both did. Helping to reign in someone like that pirate doesn't erase my sins, but it goes some small step toward atoning for them."

Well, fuck. Really?
As Roger enters the double-wide that counts as the main office of the junkyard base, a man in a brown and yellow costume turns from the console where the alerts come in. Dennis Murphy, looking like a horrible mix of Daredevil and Wolverine, gives the mutant a broad grin, raising a hand in greeting. "Faultline! Good to see ya! I heard you guys did good out there, good work!"

Demolition Man is the sole founding member of the Great Plains Avengers, and before an official endorsement from Captain America and the true Avengers, was one of the few solitary heroes operating in the mid-west, let alone in Kansas. However, with the Avengers themselves supporting the initiative to acknowledge and maintain heroic groups throughout the nation, experienced heroes (C and D list that they may be) have been tasked to train and encourage the upcoming heroes, regardless of their origins or experience.

Murphy glances out past Holden, watching as Ms. Congeniality heads into one of the other double-wides to begin cooking. "Oh man! I'm glad I got here when I did! Eve's an amazing cook and I'd rather have one of her casseroles than another night of McNuggets any day of the week." He gives Roger a goofy grin and claps him on the shoulder. "I'm proud of you, Roger. I want you to know that. It takes guts to turn your life around like you have. Cap's got an eye on us both, what with what all you did in North Carolina under Magneto, and I think that's going to be a good thing." He looks back out the door towards Toad and makes a face.

"And... Mortimer did good, too, probably, right? I should tell him that. Shouldn't I?" Dennis sighs, pulling his mask back and running a hand over his jaw. "Man, Rogers can do this with ANYONE. There's an ameoba guy at Xavier's and Cap just shook the kid's hand and put an arm around his shoulder. Came out all covered in this goo. And now I gotta do the same and shake Toad's hand." He laughs and shakes his head, grinning again at Roger. "Unless you wanna tell him. I wanna make sure Eve makes that tater tot casserole, and if I gotta run down to Harp's for it, I will."

Mortimer nods somberly. "I know, Roger. I can be flippant, but I know all too well that somebody has to fight guys like that. We've both got a lot to make up for after what we did. But hey, that's in the past. No reason we can't have a little fun with it today; no reason to make ourselves suffer any more than we already have, right?"

And I'll take 1 XP for my past crimes with the Brotherhood coming up

Utilizing her incredible mom senses as D-Man enters the kitchen, Eve doesn't even turn from the stove and the steaming hot dish resting on it as she says, "Ohhh, hey dere Dennis! C'mon and grab you a seat." His appetite matched just about every other superhuman attribute he was sporting, so she was very glad that another thirteen pans or so were still working their way through the ovens. "Dem kids did a good job out der today."

Well, fuck. Really?
Since this is a comic book game you are free to just have flashbacks to interact with each other, and I encourage you guys to actually riff off each other. I'm going to move us along but the whole student/mentor thing with Faultline and Kindling thing is cool.

Making it all worth it
Dennis, as payment for the ever-beloved tater tot casserole that is going to make him have to double up on his exercises in the coming week, helps Eve by setting the table and doing all he can, and the two chat amicably as they tend to; both are the eldest members of the team, excluding possibly Sam if you count gerbil years like dog years. When dinner is ready, D-Man pokes his head outside and puts his pinkes in his mouth, whistling loudly and shrilly. "Come and get it, guys!"

The others come at their own pace, taking their spots at the table and generally following the routine that has been set for months now. Dennis stands at the head of the table, holding the back of his chair and grinning proudly at the Great Plains Avengers. "You did good work out there again, guys. The Avengers have got to have their eyes on you now." He winks and clicks this tongue, chuckling to himself as he takes his seat. "Who'd have thunk Kansas would have so many villains?" He happily heaps the cheesey tater tot casserole onto his plate, thanking Eve again before shoving a forkful of food into his mouth. He continues talking, covering his mouth as he does. "You guys remember that one mutant that came through here? The sensory projection kid, anything he felt he could make you feel instead? And he mostly used it for fart jokes?" Dennis laughs and for a moment chokes on a tater tot, before Eve whallops him in the back.

He grins sheepishly as he wipes his mouth. "I've been hit by Iron Man and it's a tater tot that almost kills me, ha!" He is about to continue when an alarm blares in the double-wide, and he shifts around in his seat, dropping his fork as he and the others see the message flashing on the screen. A weird upside down U with feet flashes on screen before the words 'OMEGA LEVEL THREAT' scrolls across the symbol.

"Ohhhhh no."

Fifteen minutes ago and eighty miles north..
A teenager with a silver skull in his lip finishes draining the can of Pabst he'd paid some wino to buy for him, burping loudly and laughing. He and his friends are on a farm that had, at one point, mysteriously turned to a dustbowl. Their music is loud and discordant, and the teenagers playfully fight and insult each other, laughing and being teenagers through it all. The pierced punk crumples the can against his forehead to the cheers of his comrades. The group toss their empties into a nearby well, but a noise from within causes them to freeze.

"It's just an old fuckin' well, Pete. Don't be such a pussy."
"Man gently caress off, Jim, wells don't fuckin' groan like that, dude. "

Jim, the one with the piercing, laughs and hops off of the tipped over tractor he'd been sitting on. He walks backwards towards the well, his eyes locked on those of Pete and his friends.

"You know old man Jacobs was crazy and fuckin' killed people. No way you look like that and don't murder people. So maybe... just maybe.. this is the well he buried all those drifters and poo poo in?"
"Dude, come on. It's getting late, my mom's gonna kill me if-"
"If what? You come home late? gently caress her, man. I bet you that was the ghost of some hooker Jacobs shoved down there."

The teenager turns, standing before the well with his arms outstretched. "I bet she's just fuckin' lonely, man! HEY WAKE UP DOWN THERE! I GOT YOU WHAT YOU WANT!" The others glance to each other uncomfortably, with only a few still laughing. Jim unzips his pants, and before Pete can complain, begins to urinate into the well while laughing like a loon.

Jim is about to speak again when he looks into the well, and he shrieks, falling backwards while forgetting his pants are undone. The ground shifts beneath the teenagers, plumes of dust and dirt sailing into the air as the earth cracks and rumbles. The teens run for it, screaming all the way, when the farm behind them explodes outwards, raining massive chunks of sod and dirt in all directions as a titanic and terrible creature stands to its full height, roaring into the sky and expanding its colossal wings.

"I! HAVE! AWAKENED!"

Current time..
"Ohhhh no no no no, an Omega level threat?! Here?!" Dennis stands at the console, frantically losing his mind. The coordinates for the threat scroll along the top and bottom of the screen in a ticker with up to the date information on what's going on. So far, little has been reported beyond the fact there IS a threat. Since the alert dropped three minutes ago, Dennis has tried (with no luck) to contact the Avengers, the Defenders, and the X-Men with no luck. He runs a hand through his mess of ginger hair and groans in frustration.

"Jarvis says Stark and the Avengers are out on some cosmic.. thing.. the Chinese dude for Doc Strange says the Defenders are in some mystical realm holding back.. whatever.. and I don't even know who's running Xavier's these days but they're not answering the phone." Dennis places his hands on either side of the console, hanging his head as he tries to think. "I.. I don't know what to do, guys. We can't handle an Omega level threat. There's no way. I mean.." He glances back, an unsure look on his face. ".. you guys are great, but.. Omegas are for the Thors and Hulks and Stranges and.. and Colossuses of the world. We don't know what it is or anything but.."

He trails off, lowering his head again and going quiet as the alarm light continues to pulse and the ticker continues to stream.

Toad/Mortimer Toynbee

An Omega Level threat? Well, they'd had a good run. Toad takes the opportunity to shovel the rest of his plate into his mouth, determined not to die hungry. Once it slides down his throat far enough for him to speak, he scans all present. What were the odds they could take on something that scary? They'd struggled with the Pirate! And yet, nobody else was coming. They had to do something.

"Well, D-Man, I hate to say it... but we gotta go out there Maybe we can't beat it, but we have to at least try to get people out of the way until somebody qualified shows up, yeah? And so what if Omegas are for the Colossuses of the world, eh? I used to fight the X-Men and I'm alright, maybe Omegas are overrated."

"Forced" doesn't even begin to describe the smile he dons after his weak attempt at lightening the mood.

Roger Malcolm Holden [Public]

Roger remains mostly quiet when Demolition Man brings up North Carolina. He knew Dennis was trying to be supportive, but Roger always had issues when someone brought up his past with the Brotherhood. He was young and stupid for most of his time, but he knew that didn't excuse it. Even after Dennis leaves to check on the cooking, Roger remains in a funk, and stays that way until halfway through his plate, right around the time the alarm goes off.

An omega level threat, just great. Roger is surprised, happily, when Mortimer steps up and advocates exactly what Roger is thinking. "Mortimer is right. We might not be the best option, but we're the only option right now. Hopefully backup is on the way and we just need to hold things at bay. if not, then we have to try and protect who we can and clear the area."

Roger looks over those assembled and starts going over how best to respond. Roger wasn't a leader, but all that grooming from Erik stayed with him. "Well we all won't fit in the Cavalier, and even if we could, it'll take an hour to get 80 miles. Don't suppose the Avengers left us a Quinn Jet, huh Dennis?"

Okay, taking One exp from Demo man mentioning my past, I think that's the only EXP, unless we count me as leading the team last time.

Eve finished cleaning her own plate and simply said, "Guess dem dishes can wait, eh? No rest for a hero!"

Unlike the others, she didn't seem terribly disheartened by the absurd threat that would soon be confronting them. She may not be Colossus, but she had more than enough pep to give whatever villain came her way a long, rambling Minnesotan Good-Bye.
