Looks like everyone blinked and missed that Khan is out! https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-61055210 Continuing the proud tradition of Pakistani PMs not finishing their terms. But at least he's the first one to be fired through a vote of no-confidence, so there's that I don't really follow Pakistani politics closely enough to tell if this is going to make things worse or better.

Stamping out the possibility of a semi-independent Kurdish nation hostile to Turkey. Also, oil - they seem to be trying to annex much/most of what used to be IS's territory (who they notoriously paid for oil until the SDF crushed them).

Yeah for Turkey the existence of a functioning independent kurdish state is a considered an existential threat and something they want to crush. And now that the cold war is back on they once again have leverage with the US and Russia to get whatever they want.

I don't think even Erdogan thinks the YPG poses a serious threat to him at this point. IMO it's domestic politics, and has been from the start, since all of this poo poo started initially around the time he needed to ban the Kurdish party that cost him a parliamentary majority years ago. Since then he's pretty clearly demonstrated the dominance of both Turkey's military and their security forces domestically, and it's hard to imagine there's any real risk of another uprising inside Turkey. This is about Erdogan playing sultan whenever he needs more votes (see also the escalating rhetoric aimed at Greece over Aegean islands), and taking advantage of Russia being too busy invading a neighbor themselves to expend a lot of effort stopping it.

There has always been a problem with waging a general war since days immemorial that once you start an operation, unless all opposition folds and you get everything you wanted, your goal posts just move ahead and wider. Alexander just couldn't stop at defeating Persia, could he? GWB or Obama couldn't just quit after taking Afghanistan or killing OBL? There's always a stretch goal to go after. If you haven't defined your goals precisely enough (which is hard because the scenario will change the moment you go to war), you will never fulfill them, and if you try to only achieve some limited goals then your opponent has no reason to stop harassing you.

I already posted this in the pictures thread, but as much as I might enjoy seeing Erdogan humbled, it really sucks that it's because he had to cave to a far worse tyrant. Shining a light on the Khashoggi murder and helping Qatar stand up to Saudi bullying were some of the best things Erdogan did, but even he eventually had to bend the knee to the Saudis in a way that's humiliating enough for even pliant Turkish media to notice. https://twitter.com/ragipsoylu/status/1539907352589131777 Dr Kool-AIDS fucked around with this message at 12:39 on Jun 23, 2022 |
