I remember hearing that Furbys were banned in the White House because they were concerned that spies could use them to record classified information. I think the commercials claimed that you could talk to them and they'd learn words and phrases from you, but I'm fairly sure that was a bunch of bullshit. People bought into the hype for those things pretty hard, and consequently they really over-estimated what they were capable of.

In all actuality, Furbys didn't really do much of anything at all other than babble loudly and use up batteries. What a lovely toy.

the 90s were good and bad

it was the last optimistic decade. you can see it in the tone of the sci fi of the time, compared to 00s and onwards scifi.

in terms of social progress and access to entertainment we're better off now, but economically we're worse off, and there's also this sense of foreboding... as though an era of stability and advancement is coming to an end and something ominous is looming. all the technology that seemed like it could change the world for the better back in the 90s has also shown a light on what really goes on in the world, and informed us more than ever before of how backwards and hosed we are as a species

That green is more 90s though. If it was 80s it would have been pastels or pink and grey.

Yeah when I was googling it I saw an article saying there were still one or two places that still carried them out there. Weird how that stuff still carries on somewhere long after it's been largely discontinued.

also, 90's recording toys
