I haven't paid attention to watchOS in a while, did they ever add a way to turn off Nap Detection in the Sleep Tracking suite? My watch absolutely will not stop logging hours and hours of various sleep stages from middles of days when what I am actually doing is sitting down, not even really reclining, like, sat in chairs, normal chairs, feet touching the floor and everything. My use case is very simple: I don't nap. If I have not turned the Sleep focus on, I am not sleeping. I do not take naps, and if I did I would activate the loving Sleep focus. I want this feature to gently caress off.

Can any runners in here recommend a good third party running app? I have tried the default Workouts app, Nike Run Club, Strava, and Runkeeper, and none of them meet all my needs (or even match what the Garmin app can do). Mainly looking for something that allows me to edit workouts, has built-in shoe tracking (blown away that Apple doesn't have this), and a complication or widget so I can easily start new workouts.

Healthfit is more for data display but has shoe/bike tracking. Apple’s catching up to most of their features though but it’s still a very nice app that does explorer tiles and eddington numbers too it that’s your thing. For actual workout tracking/guiding maybe try Work Outdoors or whatever it’s called, requires a little janitoring though.

HealthFit seems almost perfect, thanks a lot, I've never even heard of that one before. It's basically what the Fitness app should be. No way to edit activities but it has everything else, and at this point I'm not sure there's anything out there that actually ticks every box. WorkOutDoors somehow has every conceivable feature other than gear tracking, which is just weird to me. I would've thought that'd be one of the first features you'd add to a running app. Oh well. Thanks!

I use HealthFit to sync to Strava, but as time passes, Strava keeps shittifying their free tier. So while I keep syncing to Strava, I hardly ever open it anymore.

Same, the only reason I used to still use strava was for gear tracking and now that healthfit has that included I’m like welp

Strava is like 80% ads now, it's such a bummer. Used to be a great app.

I'm working on getting back into shape and haven't used Strava in years and opened it for the first time a few weeks ago to get Rouvy synced and holy gently caress it's near useless now. For all intents and purposes it's just middleware to upload your workouts to something that doesn't suck.

This is a pretty cool new watch app, I don't necessarily suggest rushing out to buy it right now because it's got some rough edges (the phone side needs some usability improvements) but it's a one developer show so I assume will get better. Or it won't, who knows with these things. But regardless it's a mapping app that lets you hike with offline maps that also imports GPX or strava routes. https://mappawatch.com/

Looks like a nicer version of WorkOutDoors. Definitely interested, because WOD is visually kinda eeeeeeeeeh, even tho it does its job. Also, it's maps second. --edit: Speaking of which, what's the situation with third party workout tracking apps and GPS? I have the faint memory of them being locked out of dual frequency GPS. That still/even true? --edit: Seems like Mappa is downloading the map tiles as bitmaps or something. WOD is way leaner in regards to map storage of OpenStreetMap data. I'm surprised that the Watches (still) don't derive HRV from ECG readings. You'd think that gives you the most accurate result vs. the PPG sensor.

I don't own an Apple Watch or know how to use them, but my mother has one and loves it even though she's possibly the most boomer-itis person about technology. She says the screen is very dark at night and has a bed on it. I don't know where to steer her to get it to stop, because she's a night owl who almost never sleeps. Help.

Sounds like she’s either willingly or automatically activated Sleep mode which has a bed in it. You should find something in the settings, here’s a overview of the mode: https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/track-your-sleep-apd830528336/watchos

If that ^^ linked post doesn’t solve it, it’s probably just the “Sleep” focus mode being scheduled on the phone that the watch is paired to. On the phone, go to Settings, Focus, Sleep. Scroll down to “Next Schedule’” and either delete or edit the start/stop times to better match her sleep schedule.

It's amazing how many 'wow, that's cool' I get when I use my watch to pay, even after having owned one for a year. It's one of the best things about it imo. (Having a mobile timer for cooking is the best thing)

I track my workouts, bike rides, and walks. I never look at the data. I do like closing those rings though.

Anyone got any recommendations for where to buy good quality 3rd party braided loops that ship to England? Apple doesn’t sell the Lavender loop I bought anymore and it’s looking a bit ropey after 3 and half years of use.

If you're in the UK, I'd recommend taking a look in TK Maxx, they seem to regularly have a lot of official braided loops and sport loops at a steep discount. I've even seen quite a few Lavenders. It's a total crapshoot if they have any in stock, but you might get lucky.

TK Maxx is good, they only seemed to have 38/40 mm bands and not the big ones last I checked. Be wary of Amazon bands, quality sorta dropped off for some reason. The ones I bought circa 2 years ago still hold up but the ones I bought last year are falling apart fast. Maybe just bad luck. Good for playing with colors though.

The thing I always tell people about the Watch is that it sucks absolute poo poo at basically everything except for like five or six incredibly specific things, for which it is absolutely indispensable.

Calling shenanigans on battery health percentage. My Ultra 1 has been stuck at 83% for probably a full year now and it’s gotten noticeably worse since. If I do an hour long workout at some point during the day, my watch will end the day under 10%. If I work out and then later track a hockey game that night, I will definitely need to charge it midday. I was hoping to get the battery swapped under AppleCare, but the two years expired a while ago and I neglected to extend it. Bummer.

It's possible there's a process stuck draining the battery and this should kill that. -Back in the day, MacBook batteries would sometime need to be recalibrated. You did this by letting the device die and then leaving it plugged in to fully charge, and then leave it on the charger a bit longer. I dont think this is a thing anymore, but it can't hurt in this scenario. -Wipe and setup fresh. This would be your last option. -If you have an Apple Store nearby they can run a free diagnostic and as part of that you can get the battery capacity reading. You can also get the battery serviced for a cost if the watch its out of warranty. According to apple's website (USA) it's $99. https://support.apple.com/watch/repair

All of the above. I was/am notorious for having poo poo watch battery life over the years. Last year I completely nuked my phone and watch and started completely over. It was a huge PITA and didn’t change anything. That post wasn’t really meant to get suggestions, rather to suggest that Apple battery health is wack. There was one update where it went from 81% to 83.
|
![]() |
|
I don't think it's whack. The battery reports that data. The phone isn't guessing. I have access to Apple's diagnostic tools and I've run them on many devices and compared the battery results to the built in reporting and other apps like coconut battery and they are always close to each other. I've serviced many Macs over the years and I've only run into a handful where there absolutely was a battery issue despite the diagnostic coming back all green. I wish I knew why you have the worst luck with batteries.

Though I guess with braided loops you have to get pretty lucky as you need the right watch and wrist sizing.
